I've tried and tried and tried with Tales, but the music and vocals sound too cluttered and at the same time the production and performances outside of Howe sound tired and flat. Plus, Bruford is gone.....nothing was the same after Bruford left. I do love some of the "passages" and think it could do with a "defattening", a more stripped down, organic replay. Maybe instead of an Anderson, Rabin, Wakeman tour, how about kicking Rabin to the curb and adding Howe, then run thru Tales again. I bet a leaner sound and a more inspired performance would bring those Tales tracks alive.

Just amazing...incredible...haunting....beautiful...exceptional.
Quite a treat.
Drama was good also and so were the classics they performed.
Howe looks like he weighs 95 pounds and is 80 years old but he is pretty spry. |
I saw them a few weeks ago, and was delighted with how strong this section of the concert was. The band played it very well indeed. Going again to see them in MI next week, really looking forward to it.

I'm thinking - they sure crammed in ANY possible idea, albeit, however calculated, as to where the compositional ideas could go. It's not an easy listen by any stretch, but so rewarding. This album is priceless to me. And I love it.
Getting folks to dig this album is harder than getting folks to dig Meshuggah............

Tales is indeed much more interesting compositionally. It just offers much more material than Close To The Edge (song) in one epic; too much to know by heart really! One can tell the form of CTTE, but not quite so with any of Tales, much more progressive and much less repetition.

I also think Tales is an awfully underrated album. Compositionally, to me, at lest, it is better than Close to the Edge, far more ambitious. Again, this is only my opinion, but, along with Fragile, it is probably my favorite Yes album. No offence to CTTE intended.

..........all I can say is : I love this album since 1987, just BRILLIANT. And to this day, always a total bliss to spin.
Really, so much easier to get into than dear Genesis' Lamb extravaganza. I just don't get why so many folks dislike this amazing album..............?

Steve Howe did excerpts from 'The Ancient' when I saw his solo tour a few years ago.
This album keeps on giving - my favourite 'side' also shifts over the years...'The Remembering' is the current fave. Not many bands come close to matching the intricacy and range of this album...

Welcome! You are in good company. I listen to it frequently & am always amazed at what I hear upon repeated listenings.
For a guy who wasn't terribly into the work, Wakeman does some amazing things throughout! I love his use of 8-voice choir mellotron in "Revealing."
Squire's use of the fretless bass on "Remembering" evokes a tympani. Remarkable.

Gosh I've been listening for the first time - having always been a Yes fan but never having heard this album -
over the last few weeks played it all the way through probably 5 times.
Beautiful in parts, amazing in parts, yet meandering and incoherent in parts, it continues to reveal itself to me.
I like it.

Good to hear another Buggles lover  And the albums have a fabulous production too. Adventures in modern recording indeed. Not that it's proof, but both Buggles albums get a decent rating on Allmusic.com too (4 1/2 stars for The Age Of Plastic, 4 stars for Adventures In Modern Recording)
