I received that same message too, which immediately put me on spam alert, wondering if we'd all been spammed with the same message - and it looks like we have.

^ Thanks, I received it too. I figured maybe because I was one of those who posted in the recent Italian Prog polls. The site is legit and he wants to promote it. Not the best way to go about it.

I have received what appears to be a spam message from this member:
https://www.progarchives.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=78287 with a link to his myitalianprog.com website but I could not find a report feature in messenger... seems a bit iffy when it's a new member and is probably messaging members at random. Just a heads up for you admins. |

Spam is like a box of chocolates, squidgy, processed pork with plenty of sodium nitrite as a preservative. Spam is unsolicited, generally repetitive, generally unwanted, and comes in bulk, flooding commonly, and the internet tech/ computing name does come from the Monty Python Sketch. Generally it is stuff sent out to many sites, commonly emails, for commercial purposes/ financial gain. I hate that AI stuff and it really worries me when it comes to discussion boards, reviews, bios etc. here. We might as well just have all the members be AI if that is what we use to communicate (and it might go that way too). I would like rules about AI, and unfortunately it is hard to enforce (there would be invasive ways to limit it). If one is putting up multiple/many unsolicited AI generated posts and reviews then I would consider that to be spam. Unsolicited AI generated content here is spammy to me. What we call it is not that important except when it comes to the rules, and I would like rules on it as said. Edited by Logan - June 02 2024 at 10:54 |

I suspect the term derives from the classic Monty Python Spam sketch - it's foisted upon you whether you want it or not.
When it comes to emailed spam it probably applies to anything from sources you've never heard of, advertising stuff you don't want (and probably also a scam). As for technical definitions for these kind of terms I usually refer to Computer Hope. https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/s/spam.htm |

Spam is a bit like prog, isn't it? People use the term as if there were a single clearly and unambiguously defined true meaning of it, but there isn't. In a discussion we can try to make transparent how people use such terms differently, but there is no authority for saying this one is right and that one is wrong.

Yes. Indeed. Discussion. AI bots are by design not able to participate in a discussion because they lack self awareness. |

In the context of forums, my understanding of the term 'spam' is that it refers to posts that have no relevance to the discussion in hand, AND are made purely for the purpose of self promotion, or promoting a product or cause (that no-one is remotely interested in). Subsequently it differs substantially from practices such as going off topic, or trolling. |

I think that providing misleading/false information with the use of a AI bots is spam as well. The forum rules were written in 2005 when AI bots were not a thing yet. But now, it's an evolving grey area. And it's becoming more and more dangerous because it gives trolls and scammers new powerful weaponry. The "tectonic guitars" thing was just a taster of what spambots can do to ruin a human-based discussion community, injecting loads upon loads of machine-made nonsense into our online conversations.

Just "unwanted"?! It's a little bit more. If it's "unwanted:, then someone going off-topic in a thread, it's spam. Someone's trolling and mockery can be considered spam. |

Spam = unwanted post. If nobody wants it, it's spam. It's not just my words. It's your words as well.

I agree with what you say.
Nobody wants ChatGPT created posts for sure, but in the end it's not spam. |

Except, that doesn't matter cuz in the end Progarchives Forum is an internet message board meant for you to have conversations with real people. It's not an automatic robotic encyclopedia filled with partially useful info and partially dumbass crap (like the aforementioned doomsday drumming and tectonic guitars). Filling this place with ChatGPT bots is certainly far from the spirit of this forum. And even if you don't agree with all I've just said, you will admit this. "Watanabe" (more like Roboto-San) did not put any information or a disclaimer they were using AI generated text in their posts. That alone is scamming. It's against the forum guidelines anyway. is it?! ![]() Some information on music generated by ChatGPT could be, like it or not, useful. It's just a lazy way (also an easy way) to do it. Spam is also something abusive, like an obnoxious uninvited guest.
