Non-prog:

Kiss
Motley Crue
Blue Oyster Cult
Def Leppard
Fountains of Wayne
Toad the Wet Sprocket
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah
Spiritualized
Panic! At the Disco
Fall Out Boy
Blink-182
The 5, 6, 7, 8's

Almost all bands with The in their name, viz. The Flower Kings, The Wilde Flowers, The Ugly's, The Jam, The The, The Fall...

Prog:

Yes
The Flower Kings
Gregor Samsa (I like the name, but not the band, so in this case it's the wrong name for this type of band; I expect to hear and avant band to have such a name)

"Gentle Giant" is a great band, but a lousy name.  The first time I mentioned Gentle Giant to someone, he thought I was talking about a kid's show called Friendly Giant.

And, sorry to be scatological, but for some reason I associate it with Rectal Giant -- Three Turds.  I guess it's because of the grunt in Three Friends "Mister Class and Quality".

I could add many names to that list. I found one I really, really liked though: Arthur Loves Plastic. I wish I had come up with that one...

And there's me thinking that the Norwegians were being ironic. Wink

I'd say early 70's rocker's 'Hard Stuff' Very unimaginative, superb band though.

The Green Carnation is a book from the 19 century that was loosely based on Oscar Wilde's relationship with Lord Douglas that indirectly lead to his trial of  for Gross Indecency. In the novel, the Green Carnation was a symbol if identification that certain young men wore to identify themselves to each other. Whether that information is relevant in this circumstance I know not. Wink

blind guardian is such a silly name that I like it Tongue
Spock's beard I have actually seen the episode of Star trek this name comes from after I saw it I liked the name before that I saw it I didn`t like it at all
Kansas  ..  who would ever imagine such a skilled prog band would have the name Kansas ?   I expected country and western music I do think that if they had gone with their original name White Clover or Proto Kaw they would have had more of an impact
for the name Kansas was kinda tarnished from the start and stacked in the country sections in many record shops .. so crazy

there's lots of funny and odd names in prog many people who don`t know any better think Jethro Tull is the name of a guy not a band
