I couldn't agree more. One of the most melodic hard rock guitarists out there. You can hear his jazz influences on lots of his solos (e.g. Moon Crazy off the album "Mirrors").

Nor prog but my favourite guitarist (alive) is Kim Mitchell. His Max Webster work definitely leaned towards heavy prog, no less than say Rush or even Saga. His more recent stuff (80s, 90s) was a little more commercial but the man has to make a living.
My all time favourite guitarist bar none (and sadly long passed on) is Frank Zappa. No-one made a guitar sound like that, ever.

Steve Lukather in the 80s is sort of overlooked and hes importance in metal sound and picking technique is very underrated. One of the most fluid shredders

Dave Ball - Procol Harum. He was only in the band for a short time and many (rightly) talk of Robin Trower, but his work with them is wonderful;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21dh4JDZ2ts or on this essential album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG4AI0TgenU Very much underated - great guitarist

Maybe in the US, but Justin Hayward is far from underappreciated in the UK.

Met John in May after the Arena gig in Gothenburg. He doesn't look like or sound like what you might expect from a neo prog guitarist in his jacket and shirt and with his geezer attitude. We had a good chat.

^ Great choice with Justin H.
I’d say Roye Albrighton as well, and John Cipollina. Cipo was an incredible guitarist, seems to have been forgotten over the years. |

I don't think Justin Hayward has ever gotten credit for his playing. Certainly his song-writing skills, but for the guitar? Not so much. Perhaps because he was never flashy and played the guitar in context with the overall sound of the composition, rather than with lavish solos. Anyway, brilliant tonal quality, and his style is unmistakable -- you hear that slightly distorted, effortless guitar lead and you know it's the Moody Blues...
And I've gotten carpal tunnel playing this on acoustic... |

This is highly unfair, specially how his guitar is used in those early albums which was quite a bit less about the fanboy pyrotechnics that folks here and elsewhere adore, but about how to use the sound and the effect on his guitar within the piece in question, and adding to its strength ... which was not loudness and noise, compared to the over rated number of crappy guitarists here that do nothing but show off their pyrotechnics on the string, and have absolutely nothing to show for it musically. In terms of his guitar presence, and use, he is exceptional, and the only sad thing is that in his old age, these days, he is not, or can not, be as smart and as good as he used to be, or maybe the material just is not half as creative and original as it used to be. BTW, the late Roye Albrighton of NEKTAR deserves mention here. One heck of a special guitar and singer!

Yep. Roy could rip. Along with Glen Campbell and Jerry Reed. (and I despise country music)

Clark passed? He was an incredible guitar player despite his hillbilly banjo-playing image . RIP, man. |
