The only name I've heard as a possibility for the role (ie BBC rumour, ie complete guess by whoever wrote the headline) is Russell Brand James Nesbitt:

Could be an interesting choice.

^ That's not a bad suggestion - we've had a run of trendy young doctors, perhaps it's time to return to an older doctor.
What?

Matt Frewer. The Max headroom guy. But to understand why, you must have seen his role as Berlingoff Rasmussen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "A Matter of Time" (1991), and especially his short lived CBS series, Doctor Doctor. Think of a less smarmy, more smart ass Alan Alda.
P.S. for those who can't see a colonial (canadian) playing the role, he did graduate from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1980.
"Here I am talking to some of the smartest people in the world and I didn't even notice,” Lieutenant Columbo, episode The Bye-Bye Sky-High I.Q. Murder Case.

LOL

How else would he play the Doctor?  Anything else would be disappointing.

Has anybody heard any rumors involving who is being considered for a replacement?  Also, I've heard a few different stories regarding Tennant's role as the Doctor.  According to some sources (including a report on the BBC website from just a few days ago), Tennant has said that he will not be the Doctor in 2010, while others say that he'll be replaced at the end of the 5th season. Confused

May I nominate: Wolverhampton Wanderers Midfielder (1970-73) Danny Hegan

Yum! Can I......Gemma Arterton.  Wink

She can't be the Doctor.  I wouldn't be able to pay attention to the stories.  Cry

Too bad John Simm already played the Master.  I think he'd be a great candidate for the Doctor as well.  Another good one would be his costar in Life On Mars, Phillip Glennister.

^ great one. LOL

I concur with Simon Bailey.

A bit long in the tooth, but Mel Smith would be a good one.

And this one mightn't be bad:

Or...

But why not a female Doctor for a change? Perhaps Dawn French.

Not a bad choice.  Another good one would be David Troughton.

From the list on the BBC, I'd go for James McAvoy, maybe Alan Davies as a long shot?

Bill Bailey is an excellent choice.

I would also like to suggest, Martin Clunes or Bill Nighy.

I doubt they'd be mean when dishing out the Jelly Babies

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

I don't want Eddie Izzard to do it if it interferes with The Riches (no reason it would, and I think that's wrapping up -- haven't checked -- the only show that I was even more careful not to miss than Doctor Who).

I'd like Steve Coogan to play the Doctor (Doctor Who, the show's title, is for "I'm the Doctor."  "Doctor who?").

And Pertwee was my favourite Doctor, followed by Tom Baker (both great).

Tom Baker was the only real Doctor in my book.

That being said, if you can woo Bill Nye the science guy to the isle, he would be perfect.
