Behold.. the Arctopus, the F***ing Champs, Planet X, Indukti, LTE,

all for the same reasons.. they kick ass, breathe life into metal, and did I mention the ass-kicking part?

This message is for A Simple Mistake:

Now I know if you have a favorite band you should stick by it and to me it seems like you're a big Opeth fan but you gotta mix it up I mean I listen to Dream Theater, Tool, Rush, A little Opeth now, The Who, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and so on.

So don't be all about one band man!!!

Pain Of Salvation are my favourite Prog metal band. The main reason is that they are brilliant at infusing emotion in to very technical music with really impressive compositions, in short, Daniel Gildenlow belongs to that very small group of people that I would class as geneiuses. The fact that all five member are very proficiant on their instruments (well, I've yet to hear Simon Anderson play, but I doubt he'd be in the band if he couldnt keep up) is is a bonus that I think lets them do what they do so well.

Umphrey's McGee are really good. They are not as much prog metal as Fusion though

O.K., if you're into progressive metal you gotta check out Opeth.  they are by far one of the best prog metal bands I've heard.  their music is really smart because of all the awkward time signatures and chords.  check out their album Ghost Reveries.

Ayreon, Dream Theater, and Opeth are the superior prog metal bands.

Has anyone mentioned Russian Circles yet? Excellent post-metal in the vein of Pelican

Progmetal bands I like:

Dream Theater
Tool
Opeth
Mastodon
Fates Warning
Symphony X (people say they're power metal but they're far more progressive than any power metal band I know of)
Ayreon
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (Avant/RIO metal)
Pain of Salvation (I only have TPE1 which I haven't listened to in a while, it's pretty good....Scarsick is just painful to me though)
Porcupine Tree post Stupid Dream-era

Seems there are not a lot of Fates fans here. I suggest  you should hear them, specially A Pleasant Shade of Gray, one of my favourite albums of all time. Kevin Moore and Matheos are excellent composers.

If you do dig into Fates, then I recommend Office of Strategic Influence(OSI). That trademark Matheos riffing is at its best in this band's first album. Moore shines a lot also, makes a slight regression to the early DT days, but maybe because Portnoy is on drums. Though, his style on this band is really different from Dt and LTe.

Iron Maiden is also a great starter. Not prog metal for definition but their style influenced a lot most of the progmetal bands, along with Metallica. Somewhere in Time is my favourite as of now(have not heard Powerslave or Seventh Son). But you should pick the Number ofthe Beast first. A classic and must-have to all metalheads!

What the guys say about Rush is true! The pioneers of the genre could be Fates, Queensryche and Dt, but their parents are Metallica and Maiden( the last being the mom heheWink). BUT the grandfather is RUSH!!

Also, while searching through this site, I found Andromeda. Simply amazed!! The voice is kinda dull, but at least give em a listen in the samples.

I say this as a progmetal amateur though. My suggestions are similar from where I once started not so much ago, after DT of course, he. They are still the best in metal IMHO!

^ Yes it is an entirely subjective distinction ... and I know you were not being serious - I admire your vast knowledge of prog metal and appreciate your comments either way - keep up the good work Mike. Big%20smile

I really like a lot of the prog metal that is available these days. My favourites are:
  • Opeth
  • Ayreon
  • Star One [ Arjen A Lucassen side project]
  • Dream Theater [specifically "Awake"]
  • Riverside
  • Fates Warning
  • Shadow Gallery
  • Symphony X
  • Rhapsody of Fire
  • Queensryche
  • Tool

Non-prog:

  • Lacuna Coil
  • Within Temptation
  • Epica
  • Kamelot
  • Metallica
  • Stratovarius
  • Katatonia
  • Leaves Eyes

...I think that is about it for the moment Wink
