I've seen the late Colin McRae roll over several times in his Impreza and walk away without a scratch. The cars are reinforced well. However, the general public are not.
Yep the skill of them is amazing and this is why some of their drivers have done well at The Race of Champions.

Agreed 100% And James, I know what you mean. That's why I would watch Rally in awe...I can not believe the skill involved to just not die. The people standing on the road to take a picture and step away right before it passes always freaked me out as well.

I always am surprised more people are not injured or killed at the Rallies as well. I'm speaking mostly of the crowd who stand on the side of road.
Anyhow... Renault have got away with it. How can they not get punished more? McLaren's actions were far less severe and they got bummed.

Everyone's right, chances are low. And almost always the catch fences work fine. But IRL is some crazy stuff. If there is never a major accident, it will be purely luck.

Renna went over the fence, but that was with the previous generation of IRL cars which had a serious aero instability, which saw about half a dozen drivers have serious airiel accidents, including Mario Andretti on his one off testing return. The current cars dont have that problem as Dallara spent a lot of time sorting it out.
I'm not saying a nasty accident isnt going to happen, because thats just asking for trouble, but the chances are fairly low.

The Tony Renna fatal crash (Rip) showed that those fences in ovals are strong but not enough....

No, one or two cars can clear those catchfences. Which recent history has proven. IRL has been incredible lucky so far. But the clock is ticking down to the big one where they, the gig promotors and the track owners will have to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars to the relatives of those who attended a race and never came back again. I hope I am wrong !!

The side by side racing at 220mph is the IRL's trade mark style, and its also why Milka Dunno isnt allowed to take part on the Super Speedways (or wasnt, I dont know if thats still the case). The catch fencing is strong enough to keep any cars in the confines of the track, as Kenny Bracks 2004 career ending accident shows. Debris flying through the fence is a different matter but thats a possibility in any form of racing at any type of track.

Piquet's "accident" could had hurt or even killed people. A wheel may have jumped over the fence. You do not and shall not plan incidents that endanger other people with the purpose to gain an advantage. Briatore got what he deserved and good riddance. I still not understand why dozens upon dozens of people was not killed in that Russian roulette Indycar race at Chicagoland one month ago. There is a big open-wheel racing accident waiting to happen and we are counting down the hours and the days to that accident.

Alonso's fine, Renault get a suspended ban (so there fine as long as they dont do it again), Briatore gets a lifetime ban from FIA sanctioned events (not just F1) and any drivers that he managers will from now on be refused a superlicense (thats Webber, Kovaleinen, Grosjean and possibly Alonso from the current grid, but it wont take mch for them to get out of there contracts) and Pat Symonds gets a five year ban from F1. Piquet, unfortunatly, gets away scott free thanks to Max granting him immunity. As far as I can tell this fair, despite the rubbish the idiot press are running about guilty teams getting awaywith heinous crimes, as the three people responsible for this scandal all got sacked from Renault (I dont for a second believe that Symonds and Briatore quit out of the goodness of their hearts, but were persuaded to) and have been punished for it (except Piquet).
The 2010 callander was announced as well today. There's 19 races next year with Canada back and a new race in South Korea that has just appeared out of the blue (they have 1 year to build an F1 spec track from scratch, I'm not exactly holding my breath). Melbourn and Bahrain have swapped places and we'll know in a by the end of the month whether its Donington or Silverstone that will be holding a race. |
WOW. Flavio....lifetime ban.... Quite a way to end it all eh? Everything you say is true, especially about Piquet. I guess it would be fair for him to be punished as well...but we all know those who snitch, (rough but true) get off fine. I felt bad for Piquet's treatment at Renault....but I guess he has gotten the ultimate last laugh, and then some. Great news about Canada, and I hope Donington gets the race.

Don't know how old this is....but just heard the news about Renault.
This is insane. So Alonso is f*cked?
I have to admit, I said before that Piquet really got a bum deal with the team. Maybe he wasn't too spectacular but I swear they had him done from day 2..... I guess he could be called a snitch....but if I was in his spot, (and I can be a bit hot headed sometimes) f*ck Renault. Maybe I would've done the same

The biggest surprise with this that i've read is that Piquet might have been the one to have suggested to crash in the first place! I find that hard to believe but is this whole sorded affair. Does leave the question who is running the team now?

Oh wow.
I guess they thought the collateral damage would be less if they admitted to it.
But yes, gosh, for someone to be asked to deliberately crash (and therefore potentially risk their life and the life of others) is bad enough but then to actually obey their rules and do it, is something else!

Renualt confirmes that they cheated in Singapore 2008 !!! Briatore and Symonds has lost their jobs. That's just incredible. To win a race, they are more than happy to put other lives in risk. In fact; great risk. I never ever thought they were guilty, but I am now proven wrong. What has the world come to ?

Fisi is the reserve driver at Ferrari next year, but that doesnt necaserally mean he wont race for one of the new teams (maybe even Ferrari, depending on how well Massa recovers).

Like Fisichella, you mean? ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif) He sure isn't going to stay at Ferrari. If he doesn't retire, then he may join one of these lesser teams. And although Rubens is the oldest guy in F1, I cannot see him moving whilst he's in the form of his life (although the car helps too, of course).
