I can promise there'll be more non-British artists in the second international A-Z, but coming up next are Iconoclasta (from Mexico), followed by Jethro Tull and King Crimson, and with any featured bands beyond that still open to suggestions. Smile

HAWKWIND      Masters of the Universe when it comes to the world of Space Brock, Hawkwind are led by Urban Guerrilla Dave Brock - the only constant member of the band - who busked on the streets of London in the late 1960's, performing an early acoustic version of Hurry on Sundown before having a Brainstorm and deciding to form Hawkwind (originally known as "Group X"), a band who've been committing Assault and Battery on our eardrums now for well over fifty years with their relentless Sonic Attack of pounding, pulsating music. Hawkwind has featured a revolving door line-up of players over the years with Lemmy (granite-faced leader of Motorhead) riding the Silver Machine to number three in the charts in 1972. South African born Robert Calvert leapt around the stage like a Demented Man in his lively performances as frontman of Hawkwind during most of the 1970's, although I suspect the mostly male audiences were there to see statuesque dancer Stacia Blake performing naked. Other notable members of the band over the years were Alan Davey, Nik Turner, Ginger Baker, Huw Lloyd Langton, set designer Barney Bubbles, lighting man Liquid Len and Dik Mik, who created various weird sound effects on his "audio generator". Hawkwind also had an unlikely partnership with sci-fi author Michael Moorcock, who wrote many of the band's spacey lyrics. In the Spirit of the Age, Dave Brock is still rocking on well into his eighties with four more recent Hawkwind albums released so far in the 2020's. The Future Never Waits, so who knows how many more Stories from Time and Space we still have left to look forward to. Smile

GENESIS       In the Beginning there were five members of Charterhouse School who One Day decided to form a band. That band was GENESIS. They were Looking for Someone to promote and produce their first album when a Window of opportunity came along in the shape of Jonathan King, a Duke of record producers working Behind the Lines at the time. The album "From Genesis to Revelation" entered a Land of Confusion and Misunderstanding though when many record stores placed the album in their religious music sections due to the religious-sounding title. The album and first single "Silent Sun" both flopped, and barely caused any Ripples in the music press either, despite Jonathan King Calling All Stations to try and promote the album and single on the radio. GENESIS' second single "A Winter's Tale" was also met with about as much indifference as A Fly on a Windshield by radio stations and barely No Reply at All from the music press. Their record company Decca became Entangled in a dispute when it was discovered there was another band in America called GENESIS, but by A Trick of the Tail, the band managed to keep their name Anyway by changing their name to "Revelation" in the United States.

The music business has always been as fickle as a Harlequin, where The Dividing Line between success and failure depends on a combination of good luck and hard work. Every new band is sailing through Uncertain Weather where they can easily be dragged down by the Undertow and Shipwrecked by having The Knife stuck into them by their record company or by the music press. That's All it takes to finish a band's career. There's Never a Time when it's been easy to make it in the tough music business, but Like It or Not, that's just the Way of the World. No astrological Watcher of the Skies can predict who's going to make it in today's cynical music industry, where the chances of success are about as hard as climbing a White Mountain of snow before the Fading Lights of Dusk close in.

After the Ordeal of seeing the commercial failure of their first album, GENESIS were In Limbo and left out In the Wilderness during a short period of Stagnation when the band members returned to their studies at Charterhouse. They weren't Down and Out or Taking It All Too Hard though, because making great music was far more than Just a Job to Do for the five talented band members. Contrary to being In HidingGENESIS were just Counting Out Time in The Waiting Room of The Cinema Show of life before returning to the recording studio. The band members were confident of The Musical Box of talent they had between them and their Horizons were positively bright with the general feeling that It's Gonna Get Better soon. GENESIS were working to a Time Table and they didn't plan on Living Forever on borrowed time, or waiting around each day until Supper's Ready. They were In Too Deep to consider Throwing It All Away at this late stage. The band were more than ready to Turn It On Again with an Invisible Touch of magic with the release of their next album, "Trespass". It would be several albums later though before GENESIS were basking in the warm Afterglow of a successful album release, followed by the Domino effect of success breeding further success in the proverbial Aisle of Plenty.

FLAMING YOUTH     Do You Remember Flaming Youth? No, not many people do, but that was Phil Collins' first band in the flowering of his youth at the tender age of 18. At Face Value, Flaming Youth were a good band and they should have been a big success, but such are the vagaries of the music business that Against All Odds the band never managed to achieve a commercial breakthrough and they broke up in 1970. Flaming Youth are now just a footnote in Genesis' history, but they did remain together long enough to record one flaming good album. Smile

QUIET WORLD     In 1970, shortly before Steve Hackett placed an ad in Melody Maker in search of a new band and expecting No Reply at All, Steve was in the prog band Quiet World with his brother John Hackett on flute, but it later turned out to be anything but a quiet world for Steve when Peter Gabriel  replied to his ad. Smile

FOCUS     It's time now to Focus attention on the combined talents of Jan Akkerman, Thijs van Leer and Pierre van der Linden as we set sail on the Ship of Memories for a voyage of discovery across the Moving Waves of Dutch Prog, where just Beyond the Horizon, you'll hopefully discover some magnificent Golden Oldies along the way. Yes, it's none other than the mother of all Dutch prog bands, or simply just, Mother Focus.  Altogether now, "Joladadijoladadi-jo-o-ooh" Smile

Yes, Paul, I see too much waste of the natural resources in your threads, and I wished you'd give it some more thought. Confused

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER      Welcome Back My Friends to the lists that never end. Come inside, come inside, and see pictures of three exhibitionists at the height of their fame making an exhibition of themselves - so  to speak - in their classic Live in Zurich concert from 1970 featured below. If you believe in The Power of Three, then you'll believe in the awesome Trilogy of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. If you include ELP's full Works, there were two short-lived offshoots of the dynamic Tarkus trio too: Emerson, Lake & Powell and Emerson, Berry & Palmer, otherwise known as "3". I've been In the Hot Seat recently for showing some love towards the much-maligned Love Beach album - an album which was about as welcome amongst ELP fans as an ominous Black Moon on the horizon. The cheesy Beach Gees album cover and album title admittedly looks and sounds like a third-rate reality "Love Island" type show. Greg Lake (whose nickname was "Spud" because he loved potatoes, and not because he resembled Mr. Potato Man in his later years) famously said the Love Beach album cover made ELP look like the Bee Gees on holiday, which many ELP fans would be inclined to agree with. By the way, ELP also stands for "Everyone Loves Potatoes" (especially Greg Lake) and there's even an ELP YouTube channel with that name. Seriously.  Smile

REFUGEE       Refugee were a short-lived Symphonic Prog threesome from London. You could be forgiven for thinking Phil Collins was a member of Refugee, because the man in the middle on their one and only self-titled album cover from 1974 bears a striking resemblance to the Genesis drummer. There's no mistaking Swiss keyboard player Patrick Moraz on the right of the album cover though. He was brought in as a last-minute replacement for Keith Emerson, who was otherwise engaged with the Prog- Rock supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer at the time. The other two members of Refugee besides Patrick Moraz were both ex-members of The Nice:- Lee Jackson on bass, electric cello, electric guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar and lead vocals, and Brian Davison on drums and percussion, where "percussion" meant virtually anything the versatile drummer could lay his hands on, including tympani, various gongs, Tibetan temple bells, African drums, kabassa (whatever that is!?) and broken glass! Patrick Moraz wasn't exactly slacking in the keyboards department either with this very impressive array of keyboard instruments at his disposal:- Mini- moog, AKS synthesiser, piano, electric piano, clavinet, organ, pipe organ, marimbaphone, alpine horn, electronic slinky, mellotron, and occasional vocals too! Patrick Moraz would of course go on to be a member of YES and a "days of future passed" member of The Moody Blues. Who could forget the famous music trial of the century!? The sole Refugee album was recorded in 1974 at ART Studios in Geneva in Patrick Moraz' native Switzerland, so he would have felt right at home there, whereas the two English members of the band, Lee Jackson and Brian Davison were temporary "refugees".

The title of the imperious 5-minute-long opening number "Papillon" can have several meanings:- Either a black butterfly; a symbolic breaking free of societal restraints and restrictions; or even a toy breed of dog with large butterfly-like ears! One thing's for sure though, the "Papillon" on this album is no delicate butterfly. No, this is an aggressive and impressive Pictures at an Exhibition-style display of powerful keyboard prog in the best tradition of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. There's no shortage of classically-inspired, lightning-speed keyboard runs to be heard from Patrick Moraz in this tremendous instrumental album opener, which also features a storming salvo of machine-gun-like drumming from Brian Davison. Yes, it looks like we could be in for quite a treat here with this gloriously pompous one-off album of unashamedly exhibitionistic Symphonic Prog. On the second song "Someday", We get to hear the emotionally-wrought (and some might say "over-blown") vocals of Lee Jackson for the first time, which also features another incredible keyboard performance from Patrick Moraz before he went on to join YES for their "Relayer" album in late 1974. "Someday" is one of those grand magisterial prog epics that gathers in pace and intensity as it progresses, so it could be described as the true definition of Progressive Rock. If "Papillon" represented a symbolic breaking-free, then "Someday" continues the theme of liberation with the powerful message contained within these lyrics:- "Someday, I'll go away, Pack my bag, Get on a plane, I'll fly up through my cloud, I'll smash right through, Right into the sun." ..... This is the kind of powerfully uplifting feel-good prog that'll leave you flying high on a wave of joyous and exhilarating emotion. If you haven't quite reached seventh prog heaven yet, then the third piece of music might help get you there, because next up is the awesome 17-minute-long, "Grand Canyon" suite, the first of two epic suites on the album. This magnificent five-part magnum opus is every bit as grandiose and spectacular as the song title implies. Be prepared to be stunned by this brilliant landscape of dazzling musical colours. The outstanding "Grand Canyon" suite represents the musical equivalent of the real Grand Canyon bathed in rich golden colours at sunset.

The title of the Side Two opener "Ritt Mickley" is a humorous reference to the strong Swiss accent of Patrick Moraz when he pronounces "rhythmically". It's another 6-minute-long demonstration of ELP-style keyboard prog at it's absolute best, so you can expect another dazzling display of keyboard histrionics from Mr Moraz & Co. The final piece of music on the album is the second of the two epic suites. It's a thunderous 18-minute-long masterpiece titled "Credo". The majestic music is divided into eight movements of stunning symphonic splendour and delight, which just HAS to be heard to be believed. This is incredible!

You can't fail to be over-awed by this stunning display of ELP-style keyboard prog. This outstanding one-off album has a treasured place in the hallowed halls of ProgArchives. Refugee might not be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but they truly deserve to be included with full honours and flags flying with this very impressive powerhouse debut!

DEAD CAN DANCE      Gladiators ready! Dead Can Dance to the tune of the world's best-known World Music duo, consisting of Londoner Brendan Perry and Aussie native Lisa Gerrard, who also has an incredible solo career, including several collaborations with Klaus Schulze and the tremendous score to Gladiator with Hans Zimmer. Dead Can Dance's unique style of darkwave music has been described as "constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty", and who can argue with that. Smile

I can't say, I'm fond of all the stars, either, and I wonder how many minutes of listening they're based on.

How many minutes of listening are the star ratings based on? It depends on the length of the album, but I can promise I've listened to all of the albums featured so far in this blog at least twice over, apart from the single album by Bacamarte and the two albums by Iconoclasta, which I only discovered recently. Smile

^^ The first two of twelve Iconoclasta albums in total. ^^

Thanks, I checked out music from both albums, and while it has similarities to Bacamarte, I don't like it nearly so much. Early impressions: I find Iconoclastic too Symphonic Prog generic and even cliche. Bacamarte has a folk influence that I like and Jane Duboc's vocals are lovely. Listening now to Bacamarte music again, as it had been 15 years or so, I do think that Iconoclastic is asound recommendation for those into Bacamarte. And I will give Icononclastic a proper spin at some time and then I may well really like it. :) Thanks.

And there is plenty of space for non-Paul topics, just as there is plenty of space for non-Logan topics (I say as the person who must have the most active topics going other than Paul now). Build a topic and they will come, hopefully. And hopefully it does not get buried under a bunch of other topics quickly.

CURVED AIR     Arriving like a breath of fresh Curved Air, It Happened Today that I've collected together a Jumbo quantity of Curved Air-related quality albums, so let's take a trip back in time with The Purple Speed Queen, Sonja Kristina and her band. As well as being a rock goddess, Sonja Kristina also had the demanding Situation of being a Young Mother during Curved Air's heyday in the 1970's. You Know you're listening to Curved Air when you hear the sound of Darryl Way's manic violin playing, which can best be described as Ultra-Vivaldi. When Curved Air first emerged with their stunning debut album "Air Conditioning" at the tail-end of 1970, the wonderful World of prog was Not Quite the Same again. In a striking Metamorphosis, Darryl Way temporarily left Curved Air due to the tempting Proposition of forming his own band Wolf in 1973. Curved Air also featured the classically-trained pianist Francis Monkman (a co-founder of the classical/rock fusion band Sky), whose fingers Ever Danced over the keyboards with the agile speed of a Cheetah. Curved Air's best-known song was of course, Back Street Luv, which climbed to No. 4 in the U.K charts back in 1971. It'd be something of a Stretch to call them a "one-hit-wonder" though with eighteen albums to their credit. It's Easy to see why Curved Air have such a strong loyal following with such classics as Vivaldi, Melinda (More or Less), Phantasmagoria, and the tragic tale of the last Queen of France, Marie Antoinette. The unforgettable music of Curved Air rises Over and Above most of what passes for music on the radio these days. Despite being around for half a century now, their music is as refreshing as a warm breeze of curved air on a Bright Summer's DaySmile

Well, Paul, it may be that this thread of yours can add something different comparing to PA's archive, but I don't see much environmental concern in it. That is unfortunately the case too with not so few of your other threads.
Yes, Paul, I see too much waste of the natural resources in your threads, and I wished you'd give it some more thought. Confused

Too much reuse in your threads, Paul, to make them as big as possible and as many as possible - quantity over quality, even I know that you say: "quantity is quality". Ermm

And in the meantime, meaningful posts and the possibility to discuss music are lost in the middle of all those stars. It's the main reason why I stopped posting on PaulArchives

^ If you like Bacamarte, then Iconoclasta from Mexico are highly recommended too. Thumbs Up

5 stars 1985: Iconoclasta - Remeniscencias - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byrjkPSvyy8

^^ The first two of twelve Iconoclasta albums in total. ^^

I'm not familiar with Art Zoyd at all. My second choice of "A" band after Aphrodite's Child would've been Ayreon. Smile

Art Zoyd is for me the greatest of the RIO bands this side of de Janeiro (or the other side, whatever). Area likely would be my second "Prog" pick.

Talking of RIO, my favourite Brazilian band are Bacamarte, and they really are from Rio de Janeiro. Smile

I know Bacamarte well. I have Depois do fim and it is very lovely album. It's been many years since I last listened to it; I should again soon. My favourite from South America is another "B", Bubu. But for my B's in PA, I'm going for Bowie and Bush as artists. And Brave New world and black midi if bands.

(B is also for Rik Mayall as Alan B'Stard in The New Statesman, Black Adder, and a whole bunch of British comedy)
