For some reason Bill Bruford's performance on "Trio" comes to mind.  He was actually given a co-composer credit for NOT playing for 5 minutes.  Now that's good drumming.

Not if the same piece of music was used with all drummers. I would love to hear Neil Peart's interpretation of 21st Century Schizoid Man, for example.

If you really wanted to, you could also measure the drummer's effect on people's heart rate or something, or you could measure how hard he hits, or how loud he is, or how long he can keep a double bass rhythm going before his feet fall off.  But, for now, I'm happy with the fact that Mike Mangini holds the record in the only quantitative measurement that anybody at all cares about.

He is the greatest in the only measurable way, and it is a fact!  Wink

Theoretically, you could attach sensors to several people's brains and have them listen to various drum solos, and then measure their neurological reactions to determine which drummer provokes the strongest emotional response.

That would be far too much pointless work for any scientist, though, unless it was government-funded, in which case the whole question of whether scientific research is relevant is usually ignored.

I'm pretty sure the OP wasn't strictly meant to be taken seriously.  If it's trolling, then it must be a good side of trolling, because this thread is ridiculously funny.

Nah, I don't see how saying you love a band can possibly be trolling in any way.  Now, what Mr. Dennis Moore is doing?  That's trolling.  By the way - Eric Johnson is boring, and Joe Satriani puts on a good show....

If my impression of him is right, Dennis doesn't mean anyone to take everything he writes seriously, either.

Well, if you believe the DT haters, EVERYTHING that is part of the Progressive Metal sub-genre is just a Dream Theater Clone.  Most overused, ridiculous, and lazy criticism ever....  As I've said before, it's kind of like if you criticized every guitar based band as being a "Led Zeppelin clone" - DT and LZ have very widely varying styles that they have shown throughout their career, so are you saying that band sounds just like this song, or that one, this album, or that one, this era, or that?

I don't believe DT haters say  that. Maybe some do, I don't have any reference though.

Oh, someone trashes Prog that sounds similar to 70's Prog, and then he himself writes music that sounds like 70's Prog...except that it has no dynamics and never really goes anywhere?  He must be the greatest musician/composer alive....

Heh heh...

It's amazing the volatile reaction Dream Theater causes on this Archives, I love it! I totally sit on the fence with them, for a band I don't make a lot of time for, I still seem to own all their albums and enjoy them from time to time, yet I'm also kind of dismissive of them frequently too?

In the end, I think I'm like the Neutreeno aliens in Futurama - "I HAVE NO STRONG FEELINGS EITHER WAY!"
