I rater don't have their favoutire era. I think they had outstanding works in each era (except for late 80's), but unfortunately some letdowns as well.

To me, Presto was both the culmination of the 80's era and the beginning of the 90's era. I consider it one of their most mature, tasteful works, though I can understand why you wouldn't like it as it's less "progressive" and complex then the rest of their catalog up to that point. I agree that Counterparts was an excellent album, though, definitely a step up from Roll the Bones, which I enjoy but is really just a not-as-good version of Presto.

Signals is incredible. Contrary to popular legend, Alex's guitar has plenty of bite. Gedd gets his best bass tone ever, Neil's kit sounds utterly amazing and those analog synths make it my favorite Rush album. Hey, the vocals are badass, too!

With the exception of Test for Echo, I love every Rush album for some reason or another. If I had to pick an era, I'd choose Caress of Steel through Hemispheres. I think they did their best heavy work on these albums, and Geddy's voice is quite awesome during this period. Their 80's work was quite good in a different manner. Their work from 2000 on is considerably better than any other band founded in the 60's from the same era. It's even comparable to their earlier work.
This is such a difficult question.

Yeah, my favorites are spread out across the eras. Caress of Steel from the early era. Hemispheres and AFTK from the middle period. Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows from the mid 80's. The much-maligned Presto from the late 80's. Counterparts from the early 90's.

My faves are Caress of Steel and Signals. I don't know what to make of that in terms of a period(I'm not a woman).

I define the eras somewhat differently. Rush had a pattern of three studio releases followed by a live album up until the 90's. Because I grew up in the 80's, my favorite period is the period covered by "A Show of Hands." Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Hold Your Fire. I realize that this period was a bit of a departure for Rush. But it is interesting as Rush makes their comeback with the Clockwork Angels tour that this period is most heavily represented. It's true that Rush lost their metal edge during the 80's. But what they gained is also significant. The glorious synth melodies, the highlighting of Geddy Lee's vocal talent, the poetic and socially-conscious lyrics, and the widening of the rhythmic palette all make this period of Rush the most fascinating for me. This was supposed to be music of the future, high-tech and foward-looking. It is telling that after the 80's, all rock music has been defined in retro terms. What does it throw back to? In the 80's Rush was not throwing back to anything, and it still sounds like music of the future.
