It's a different cup of tea. I guess people will rate this album 3* or 4* stars. It's not a 5* album, but definately not a 1* or 2* album either.

Gave $400 to my good pal 'the dentist' earlier this week so Jeanne D'Arc will have to wait a little.

I have now played five times, I am more and more like it I think there are several songs that are bright spots: 1. The Age of the Hundred Years' War (great opening) 7. The Ride by Night ... Towards the Predestined Fate (great bass part) 8. Chinon (though lengthy, but brilliant) 10. The Sword (I agree with that person: between 4'24 "and 4'50" is great) 13. Why? (Bornemann's voice evolved, the last female was great) Others are nice: 2. Domremy on the 6th of January 1412 3. Early Signs ... from a Longed for Miracle 5. The Call 11. Orléans But some are weaker: 4. Autumn 1428 at Home 6. Vaucouleurs 9. The Prophecy 12. Les Tourelles (it's too monotonous)

The album is a rockopera. So it has to be seen in a different light.
Eloy made spacey and mythological conceptalbums like Planets/Time to Turn, Ocean/Ocean II, Dawn etc.
But this is much more in the vein of War of the Worlds. There's no spacey concept to this. It's a historical story and should be considered as such.
As a rockopera it works quite right. I don't really like rockoperas though, I'm more a fan of the spacey concepts of Eloy. But the music on the new album is very good, the production is really warm and up front. The vocals of Frank are really nice, if you compare it to his singer colleagues of the same age (Ian Anderson, Fish, Justin Hayward, John Lees, etc.) There are great synthsolos, guitarsolos, lots of dynamics, great bassparts, nice timesignatures changes, very tight drumming, etc.
So on the surface there is really nothing wrong to this album.
By the way: this is not the first time, that Eloy uses narrative parts (Atlantis' Agony has spoken parts, and on Ra there's a female voice that narrates). Also the parts that are recycled are from the same concept; Jeanne d'Arc was already the subject of two songs; on Destination and on Tides Return Forever, so in that light, it's more of a reprise.
Savatage did exactly the same when the reprised When the Crowds are Gone on Streets. Also Mike Oldfield, Dream Theatre, Rush, Saga and millions more recycled old ideas and concepts in new albums, or divided concepts into several albums. So, I don't really understand that that would be a good argument for a 1* rating. A 1* rating would mean that absolutely nothing on this album resembles progrock or Eloy. And that's so far from the truth.
I don't know if this album is a 5* album, because I'd rather hear a Ocean III, I really am a sucker for spacey themes. But this albums is at least a 4* star album. The production and calmness of the songs is something that a lot of bands can take an example from. Eloy manages to pull the listener into the story, and that's really something.

Because there are some repetitions, not a particularly powerful song, and too much of a narration may lose the music But I still like it!

And what to think of this pop-project by Matze and Jürgen Rosenthal, and Hannes Folberth even played synths.. :D

^^ Thanks for posting that piece !! Great track - very reminiscent of Colours. ^ Oh yeah, KPM is SUPERB on the bass - his creative lines and tones are perfect, every time Wow - just checked Discogs and there's 10 copies of the Matze vinyl from around $11 !! Gotta be looking into that | Matze also recorded another solo album the very next year (1984) under the moniker KPM! It's called Run For Cover. The CD is hard to come by (and not cheap). Same personnel, with the addition of Lothar Krist on sax.

On top of that, Pink Floyd only had 3 or 4 essential albums. I love Animals, Wish You Were Here, Dark Side and The Wall.
But Eloy only has 1 or 2 stinkers (Ra and Destination), but they are okay-ish by me.
Of all the rip-off bands, I think Airbag takes the cake. But nobody complains about them.
And an album like Dawn and the Planets/Time to Turn-suite is unrivalled in progrockmusic. Only Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre and Entheogenic come close to that kind of synthesizer-extravaganza.

^^ Nailed it completely, my friend There are superficial similarities no doubt, so, yeah, a similar spacey-Prog styling, yet infinitely different. Now you got me........I'm thinking that I love Eloy more than classic early Floyd. Perhaps, Floyd moved on after WYWH (or even Animals) and Eloy picked up the banner from there in a most forward-thinking way. But it's cool that Floyd are in close proximity to what Eloy do, as a reference point.

My main co-worker was sick today so I took control of the sound system at work. Usually it's the commercial radio playing and the bosses are never there anyway so it was Colours, Planets and Time to Turn on repeat mode, baby.
Went down pretty well, no complaint. Got a few: is that Pink Floyd? though.

Eloy borrowed a few things from Pink Floyd (and maybe vice versa). The bass-intro to Poseidon's Creation (although the song eventually is much different to Pink Floyd), the intro to Say Is It Really True sounds a lot like Wish You Were Here.
All in all the guitarsolos of Bornemann are like Gilmours. The same approach (but Latimer does it to, and nobody complains about Camel). The synths of Wright and the synths of Schmidtgen are sometimes alike. They use the same sounds and approach. But the hardrocking egde of Bornemann/Arkona, the heavy drumming of Rosenthal, Randow, Schopf and McGilivray are something that Pink Floyd's Mason could only dream of.
Also Folberth is way beyond anyone in the game genre. Haven't heard anyone play the synths like he does. Maybe Piers Oak-Rhind of Entheogenic or some parts of Ozric Tentacles. Yogi Lang of RPWL does a good job aswell (although he sounds more like Manfred Mann).
The comparisons between Eloy and Pink Floyd are there, but only at the surface. They are in the same genre (but Nektar and Jane were aswell), so it's obvious they sound alike sometimes.
