I don't think anybody mentioned To-Mera yet. They're an absolutely great, new band from England, mixing polyrhythmic metal with haunting female vocals.

With regards to Porcupine Tree 'In Absentia' and especially 'Deadwing' are probably heavier but I dont think I would consider them a prog metal band.

Well, I never realised porc tree was a metal band? I have foabp and besides a couple heavier riffs I would never consider them metal.
I listened to some of our samples to pain of salvation, and I must say it sound quite bad? Whats that all about?

I'm pleased at the diversity of bands being mentioned in this thread.
That being said, a couple of bands I don't think anybody's mentioned who I would place in the absolute upper tier of the prog-metal world are Maudlin of the Well and Hammers of Misfortune. The former are as perplexing as they are brilliant and encorperate all kinds of styles into their music, the latter quite simply kick ass. |

Prog Metal is something that I am slowly getting into. I like bands like Tool and Opeth a lot and also Green Carnation, Katatonia, Pain of Salvation but any recommendations would be appreciated

1) Cynic - Mixing jazz, death metal, some middle eastern influences and a whole sh*t ton of virtuosity, Cynic were far and away the ultimate statement prog metal has ever made.
2) Death - The founders of death metal, Death started off as a pretty simple band with some pretty killer riffs. Chuck worked on his playing constantly and as he improved, he used a revolving door line up to keep up with his new skills. By the end of Death's 7 album run, they were playing a very technical brand of prog death metal, and tearing new assholes for chumps and chumpettes everywhere. 3) !T.O.O.H! - The czech are f**king insane. There is no way to describe this music other than bizarre, so I won't even try. Pick up Order and Punishment to hear the most inventive and progressive metal this side of 1994. NOW. 4) Isis 5) Mastodon 6) Opeth 7) Sikth 8) Demilich 9) B...TA 10) Atheist No real order aside from 1-3. |

Kamelot - Though they're basicly power metal, the few last albums surely sounds progressive, and they kick ass ! I also like them because they tend to get better and better with each album...
Dream Theater - This is the band that got me into prog, and they really awesome ! my other favourites prog metal bands are including: Symphony X, Rhapsody (cheesy, but i like it anyway ) Opeth (though i need the proper mood for listening to them) Orphaned Land (only for the album Mabool, though ) Unexpect - some crazy music, but still awesome ! |

I find most Prog Metal to be cheesy and/or boring. But I do like Tool a lot, and also so called "Post-Metal" bands such as Isis and Pelican. Opeth have done a lot of good stuff aswell.

Twisted Into Form, Spiral Architect, Vintersorg, and Quo Vadis are my favs
...why I like them? They all manage to stay heavy, clean, challenging and beautiful all the same time. I suppose that applies to most prog metal but those I'm in favor for most. Edited by Keithapparatus - June 02 2007 at 03:42 |

PORCUPINE TREE
I don´t know if we could consider PT a metal band.... but they play believeable music, why?.... I´m not sure but probably because I almost hate each new album they release, but two months later it´s my best album until they release one more...

Opeth , Dream Theater, Fates Warning my favorutes, they're popular ha ? Well, i've discovered the Opeth with Damnation album, this one has so influced me ! Then i bought ''Deliverence'' and it blew me again. 70's prog and death metal. And the Fates Warning is maybe my most favorite prog-metal band, espescialy i recommend ''a pleasent shade of grey'' and ''Disconnected'' albums, but you wont be able to find APSOF sound in other albums.I recommend ''paralels'' and ''perfect symetry'' albums if you heard them first time, they're easy for enter into the bands music.
