If Mike were the greatest drummer around, he wouldn't been playing with Dream Theater. FACT.
If I were the greatest drummer in the world, I would have been in line for those DT auditions.
If I were the greatest drummer in the world, I would be playing with various bands. Jazz, electronics, rock, minimalism, cumbia, fusion, folk, salsa, afrobeat, EVERYTHING, because I would be the best and I could play everything. Hell yeah.
Also, if I were the greatest drummer, I would know piano and other instruments, and make a solo album with me playing many instruments, not necessarily playing the drums.
Think about it, if you joined Dream Theater you would get the chance to play with some of the greatest musicians in the world AND have enough money to fund all your other musical projects for the rest of your life.
If Dream Theater is a band that nowadays has world's greatest musicians, the world has come to an end.
I rather play Zappa covers than today's DT's music. More challenging, funny as hell, and well, it's Zappa's music..

That's a lot of IF I WERE statements there...seems to me you don't really KNOW what you'd do if you were the greatest because you're NOT! Because......MIKE MANGINI IS! HA!
Mangini is crazy good and deserves where he is right now.....with the GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!! Watched him play ENDLESS SACRIFICE at MASSEY HALL, In TORONTO and he freakin nailed it. Because Mangini is so good it's not killing me that PORTNOY is not with the band anymore. DT scored big time if you ask me
And Portnoy seems to be just happy playing with so many different bands and projects:)

The greatest drummer in the world would probably choose not to play because he would not find it challenging or interesting enough. He is probably some old guy playing chess in Central Park.
