I'm kind of thinking they need to warm up with AC/DC's greatest hits.

There are no decent cover versions of Tarkus in its full form. The main issue is the vocals. Only Greg Lake can sing lyrics like ' Did you stand beside the spectro-torch?' and make it even remotely convincing. |

I'd be the last person to defend Metallica, but if in doubt listen to Garage Inc. The band can play anything they want, and sometimes play it well. Tarkus is not particularly difficult (hell, even I learned that Eruption riff). As said, I just heard it as a metal song (which it is) in that sweet time between wakefulness and blissful sleep. As ol' Dickens sez, Lars is a ass. But he is a capable ass. I would love to hear a metal band (anyone but Dream Theater) cover the song. It's able to be done.

Yeah! It would be fun but alas Lars could never manage the Tarkus stuff, thats for shure.
The main 10/8 riff could be great played in a metal fashion but not by Metallica. I don´t think I would enjoy a cover of Tarkus anyway. The record is so iconic so I can't see anyone/band adding or "spice" up anything on this. Sloppily played NWOBHM etc. is great done by Metallica but not virtuoso technical prog like Tarkus. But I agree there are thrash/speed elements in Tarkus and other ELP stuff. Same can be said of some of the Mahavishnu stuff! So much energy! |

Well it itself isn't so ridiculous, Metallica likes to be purposely experimental and do odd things (which is maybe why their experiments dont often work out) but why not?
They collabed with Lou Reed so I guess they're game for anything. |

AT least his ego is as big as the whole ELP put together during the early 70's. |

Wow, that would be very interesting, to say the least!
I just don't know if Lars would have the hability it takes to cover Carl Palmer's ground, though. |

I'd like to hear either Metallica or Maiden cover Tarkus. Is there is any cover versions of the song? I've never seen it.
