Topic: The Magnum Opus Poll Posted: April 22 2010 at 03:41 |
I also feel more people would have voted for "Echoes" as magnum opus of Pink Floyd than for the divided "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

Supper's Ready by a noselength.
Note: I agree with Rune2000 and BaldFriede that Lizard fits better in this list, but if I had to choose a KC epic, it would be Starless.

Interestingly, none of these is my favourite by any of the bands.
I'm voting for Shine On You Crazy Diamond, which is majestic. Second is Suppers Ready, just ahead of Tarkus (though the Welcome Back My Friends version of Tarkus tops the lot).
Like BaldFriede I much prefer Gates Of Delirium to Close To The Edge, and had that been an option it may have got my vote.

Ah, I know a few people don't know VdGG that well, but it seems that everyone knew Rush's epic. I dunno, maybe just an illusion on my part! Both are obviously highly recommended from me.

Starless came close, but definitely Plague of the Lighthouse Keepers. Nothing tops that.

Plague. But if The Lamb had been here, it would have gotten my vote (I consider it one long epic in the true sense of the word).

Suppers Ready, probably. But the Floyd track, and Starless.. TAAB... All amazing songs and made it a hard choice. I really should hear the Lighthouse keepers though

Really don't mind if you sit this one out
Tull of course....
Was very tempted to go for Tubular Bells though...just because no one has voted for it.
7 of 9 are 5 star songs for me.

Why not "Lizard" instead of "Starless"? If anything can be called the magnum opus of King Crimson, it is that.. I also consider "The Gates oif Delirium" to be better than "Close to the Edge". Some other suggestions from other bands: "Phallus Dei" by Amon Düül 2, "Call" by Embryo, "Immer Lustig" by Guru Guru., "Solar Music" by Grobschnitt, "Mekanik Destrujtiw Kommandöh" by Magma, "Clearlught Symphony" by Clearlight, to name but a few. The list could be continued endlessly.

Thick as a Brick. Starless comes close musically but not lyrically.

I voted just to get Suppers Ready back on top......I have learned to love a lotta of Prog since I first came to the Archives...Expanding well beyond the classic 70's symphonic, but I will also regard Suppers Ready as THE greatest PROG piece of all time....

Supper's Ready, but partly because I don't consider "Close to the Edge" to be Yes' magnum opus.
