4 stars 1973: Queen - Queen -  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kKxjOMeU-rU8pi9tCml1e8rYKUt4GCTQU

Variously described as Hard Rock/Progressive Rock/Heavy Metal (How we love our music labels!), this is the first Queen album, recorded virtually for free during studio downtime at Trident Studios in London between April and November 1972 . Most of the songs were written by flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury (briefly known as Larry Lurex in 1972 in an unfortunate parody of Gary Glitter) and guitarist Brian May with a token song from drummer Roger Taylor (Modern Times Rock & Roll), and with bassist John Deacon forever remaining the quiet man in the background (long before MP Ian Duncan Smith came along). Two singles were released from the Queen album - "Keep Yourself Alive" and Liar" - which also included a brief instrumental version of "Seven Seas of Rhye" as an album closer with the promise of even better things to come from the future "Champions of the World". Smile

Track Listing

01. Keep Yourself Alive  (3:45)
02. Doing All Right  (4:10)
03. Great King Rat  (5:41)
04. My Fairy King  (4:07)
05. Liar  (6:24)
06. The Night Comes Down  (4:24)
07. Modern Times Rock & Roll  (1:48)
08. Son and Daughter  (3:19)
09. Jesus  (3:45)
10. Seven Seas of Rhye (instrumental)  (1:45)

Queen: A band that's outlasted most of their marriages and with a singer - the Liberace of Rock - who looks like a ballet dancer running for a bus, they were the band who "stole" Live Aid, the global jukebox where Freddie could ponce about in front of the whole world - according to Bob Geldof. Smile

For me it has always been a toss up between Queen, Queen II, and Sheer Heart attack - all three are excellent prog related albums.

1- Queen II
2- A Night at the Opera
3- A Day at the Races

But Jazz, Innuendo and Sheer Heart Attack are classics too. Queen I is a great debut as well.
I shook my head and smiled a whisper knowing all about the place

Hmmm...I suppose Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack, Night At Opera....but I dont own any of those.
To me they were always more about the 'radio hits' after the first 2 so the best would be just picking up a hits package with the best tracks.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

This is one of my earliest polls. Who would have guessed it'd still be running over four years later, which is longer than the shelf life of most pop artists these days. Smile

I ended up voting Innuendo for nostalgic reasons. Queen were my first favourite band and after listening to their Greatest Hits I and II all the time every day, Innuendo was their first album I got.

I finally got to dive a bit more than their hit songs, and indeed I was pleasantly surprised, most specially by Queen 2 (which was my choice here), but also by Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera. I guess, in a way, they lost their edge once they found out they could be one of the most succesful bands that have existed.

News of the World, more anthems than others. More introspective ballads than others. And the only punk song they ever recorded.

Flash Gordon would actually make my top five. Its got synths (yeah!) and a return to the wild progiishness approach of the earlier albums. IMO

Ordered from the most valued by me, and with the 3 or 4 songs that I like the most, which doesn't mean that they are the only ones. There are some songs that I haven't included, like "Radio Gaga" or "Spread Your Wings", whose live versions are much better than the studio ones.

1. Queen II  - (The March Of The Black Queen / Fairy Fellers Master Stroke / Nevermore)
2. A Night at the Opera - (The Prophet´s Song / Bohemian Rhapsody / I'm In Love With My Car)
3. Sheer Heart Attack  - (Tenement Funster / Flick Of the Wrist / Lily Of The Valley / In The Lap Of The Gods)
4. Innuendo - (Innuendo / The Show Must Go On / These Are The Days Of Our Lives)
5. Queen - (Great King Rat / Liar / My Fairy King)
6. Jazz  - (If You Can't Beat Them / Dead On Time / More Of That Jazz / Mustapha)
7. A Day at the Races - (Somebody To Love / Teo Torriate / The Millionaire Waltz)
8. News of the World - ( We Are The Champions / All Dead, All Dead / It´s Late)
9. The Miracle - (Was It All Worth It / I Want It All / Khashoggi's Ship)
10. The Game - (Save Me / Need Your Loving Tonight / Rock It)
11. The Works - (It´s A Hard Life / Hammer To Fall / I Want To Break Free)
12. Flash Gordon - ( The Hero / The Wedding March / Football Fight)
13. A Kind of Magic - (Princes Of The Universe / Friends Will Be Friends / Who Wants To Live Forever)
14. Made in Heaven - (Too Much Love Will Kill You / My Life Has Been Saved / I Was Born To Love You)
15. Hot Space - (Under Pressure / Put Of The Fire / Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love))

Hot Space isn't perfect by any means, but I always thought it was a bit overhated. Staying Power, Action This Day, Put Out the Fire, Back Chat, and of course, Under Pressure are all really solid tunes in my opinion.

Granted, I do prefer the more heavy, beefed-up Live at the Bowl version of Action This Day Smile

No Pressure from Hot Space, but it still received a surprising three votes for best Queen album in the poll, although I suspect that's purely on the strength of this song.....
