I don't listen to much metal but Nicko always impresses me so I'll give him a shout out.

another drummer that blew my mind recently is Gojira's drummer - Mario Duplantier.
There are a lot of metal drummers I like, but the older I get, the more names I forget I'll make a brief research of names and get back to this thread. |

Abaddon (Venom).
'Twas the "troll post" of the week. Strangely, I can't think of one drummer in particular. Gene Hoglan? Dave Lombardo (especially since he left Slayer to try other genres of music)? Ken Owen (when he was valid, of course)? Also, I should maybe check the names of newer drummers... |

Keith Abrahms from Kayo Dot :O my favorite drummer in general. Nothing reaches his ridiculous sense of rhythm.
Also Greg Fox is a pretty close second. And whoever drums for Deathspell Omega.

There is no way I can realistically narrow it down to less than 5 (and that's forcing it still, I could easily make a very strong list of 10), especially since ALL metal is included, prog and non prog
So I'm going with gut here/personal nostalgia and not a debate about skill and etc Martin Lopez of Opeth. Tomas Corn of Lykathea Aflame (that was truly mindblowing stuff) and Jason Rullo of Symphony X. Sorry....I had to go with 3
Oh true he's brilliant too Edited by JJLehto - April 10 2015 at 22:28 |

Dave Murray from Estradasphere and most importantly Sculptured.
Sculptured's Embodiment contains some of the greatest metal drumming I've ever heard. Also, Hannes Grossmann keeps blowing me away. Alkaloid's new album is seriously top notch dudes.

Brann Dailor (of Mastodon)
Never a dull moment and unpredictable. I'm always focused on what he's doing in any Mastodon song. |

Tobias Andersen from Leprous comes to mind. He was fantastic on BIlateral and especially Coal. Too bad he left in '13.

Either Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) or Les Binks (Judas Priest), at least where old-school metal is concerned.

It's so hard to say, there are so many greats out there.
One of my favorites is definitely Kirk Arrington of Metal Church. He just attacks the drum kit on their debut, really underrated. |

My favourite Metal drummer is Yugoslav drummer, composer, singer-songwriter & guitarist Milić Vukašinović because he founded in 1977 a trio called Vatreni Poljubac ("Fiery Kiss") and with their straight-forward debut LP that was recorded, mixed and mastered in London's Matrix Studio and released on Sarajevo Disk label in 1978, he promptly entered the list of the real pioneers of that new wave of Metal in late 70s.
Last but not least, Milić Vukašinović also was invented, as a composer as well, that Folk Metal sub-genre with his Fiery Kiss what even today sounds really great at their third LP from 1980 as nobody in the world was recorded and released at vinyl that fusion of Metal and Folk before his Fiery Kiss trio did it.

Since we're talking about "favorites" rather than technically the "best", let's here it for some Japanese ladies...who are certainly no slouches.
Hana from Gacharic Spin: How many drummers play a cowbell on their heads? Check THIS out after the 30 second mark. Thrashy drummer Kai from Bridear HERE Cute Haruna with her pinwheel cymbals from Destrose HERE Kanoko from maybe the most fetching band in the history of metal, Cyntia HERE Believe me there are more...the Japan scene is rife with great female drummers For dudes (albeit with a female vocalist), lately I've been listening to Alhambra a lot...although they're not on the archives, this gang, including drummer Tetsuro, seems to wipe the floor with most prog metal bands on a technical level. Here's the band doing an instrumental workout, although I'm not sure about the mentality of the guy that put this on youtube HERE Here's an epic live number with the singer (talented but an acquired taste for sure): HERE Edited by Prog Sothoth - March 28 2015 at 21:01 |
