Well, it comes a time when you get everything about your fav band and wants to discover more (specially when the band in question has only few official live records and/or doesn't exist anymore). One of the remaining sources of info is the bootleg. I want to know if I can start a topic where we can exchange opinions about bootlegs. I'm talking mainly about bands of the 60's / 70's.
Of course this conversation would not go to trade or selling of bootlegs, nor indication of sites for downloading bootlegs. At least my intention is to know for instance what other people think about the performances of Pink Floyd in their pre-DSOTM years or the famous Led Zeppelin Earls Court 1975 shows. Is this possible? |

I'd love to talk Zep boots but I don't think site policy really allows it

The rule is clear:
5. No Illegal activities. Posts and threads promoting or facilitating file swapping, drug abuse, or any other forum of illegal activity are not permitted. Any such posts will be deleted, and the member warned.
...so in principle talking about bootlegs or RoIOs does not break any site-rule directly, but since discussing and exchanging opinions (i.e. rating them) could encourage people to buy or download them then that will be seen as promoting an illegal activity.
We do not permit bootlegs to be listed in the artists discography as that is interpretted as promoting an illegal activity, so threads opened specifically to talk about them will be treated the same.
However, we don't stamp on a thread that mentions bootlegs or individual bootleg recordings as part of a wider discussion about specific bands or events.

Indeed Dean.
There have been threads on bootlegs in the past. As Dean says, we don't list them on the site in the discographies, as they are illegal. We also don't permit promotion or advertising of them, including providing links to where to get hold of them.
The boundaries can of course become very blurred when bands themselves such as ELP and Tangerine Dream officially release them, and other bands such as Pendragon release albums called "Official bootleg", etc.

so just to be clear; it can come up in conversation but a thread on the subject, or on discussing the bootlegs themselves, is a no-no, is this correct? (not being facetious, just curious)

To be honest, it's a bit of a grey area. If the discussion is responsible, it will be allowed to take its course regardless of whether it's specifically about bootlegs, or they are mentioned as part of another topic. We can't bury our heads in the sand and pretend bootlegs don't exist, for some fans they have always been an important part of the picture. We must though balance this with not doing anything which might facilitate or encourage illegal activity. Sorry to give a bit of a fudged response.
![]() A quick search of the database shows that the word "bootleg" has appeared 42 times in thread titles. The ones which get closed or removed are those which say things like "Where can I get hold of this bootleg?" or "I recommend you buy this bootleg from website xxx" .
Others such as this one, http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=29085, which make it clear it is for discussion only, are still open for use.

Speaking of talking about bootlegs, aren't the worst ones where you can hear people in the audience near the microphone talking?
I must confess, I have made my own bootlegs on a few occasions and have bought some, but never sold any. The only positive think I have to say about them is that without them, would we be getting the "official bootlegs" released by the artists? Also, with all the excellent live stuff coming out on DVD, why bother? We're even talking really old stuff. I actually bought one bootleg on CD and after a while I just removed it from my collection to make space, and I'm pretty sure I can't sell it to anyone. Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Thank you all for making clear to me what I can and can't do on topics about or that refer to bootlegs. I'm pretending to open a topic about drum solos and its relevance today and yesterday and I'd quote references from john Bonham's solos in some Zep bootlegs that are really annoying.
