Just finishing up the CD version of Brave Live 2002. Absolutely sublime. Definitely the best live version of Brave that I have (and I have several).

I also love the B'Sides Themselves disc; 3 Boats Down From The Candy is definitely one of my favourite Marillion tracks.

On a random note, has anyone else in here heard Transatlantic's latest album, The Whirlwind? Mr. Trewavas absolutely shines on bass, some of the best playing I've ever heard.

Agreed. That entire album is incredible Clap

I figured that I should drop in here at some point since I've been a massive Marillion fan lately. I've bought all of the Fish-era albums, as well as Brave. I love all 5 of the albums I own Big smile

Great to see you here Jeff. Are you thinking of expanding the collection?

Definitely. I would give Script, Misplaced Childhood, and (maybe) Clutching at Straws 5 star ratings. I'm still undecided about Brave and Fugazi in terms of ratings.

I'm thinking about getting Season's End or Marbles next. Which would you recommend?

Also, is there a substantial difference between the two versions of Marbles? Are the added tracks any good?

-Jeff

Jeff, if you're looking at Marbles, make sure you get the 2CD Racket Records edition from their site. One of the tracks only on the 2CD edition, Ocean Cloud, is in my top 5 Marillion tracks, simply amazing track worth the few extra dollars alone.

I'd definitely recommend Marbles out of those two as well, one of my favourite albums from the past decade and ever.

Three times agreed: Marbles is, IMO, essential to any prog collection, whereas Season's End (though a very sollid record) isn't.

But, if you don't want to purchase the two disc version of Marbles, you should pick Season's End - either pick an album in its entirety, or don't, is my opinionTongue (I strongly advise you to pick Marbles though: "Ocean Cloud", "The Invisible Man", "Angelina", "Drilling Holes" and "Neverland" are quintessential!Big smile

Joren

(btw, if you do pick Season's End, make sure you listen carefully to "Berlin" the title track and "After me"Embarrassed)

Yeah, the 2 disc edition of Marbles gets my vote, too. "Ocean Cloud" and "The Only Unforgivable Thing" are amazing tracks. Especially the former.

Do you prefer this live version to the original studio recording ?   Often in performance a piece can come alive a bit more than in a studio, and in this case some 7 years or so after the work was created the band have had a chance to live with Brave for quite a while.

Not really, Steve. The original studio version of Brave just has so many levels. Marillion do an outstanding job of capturing that magic, but nothing tops the studio version for me.

Well, there are some Marillion tracks where there are  live versions that clean the clocks in comparison with the studio originals. From Anorak in the UK live both "Separated Out"  and "Between You And Me" are examples. Sonically, no, the studio versions are obviously cleaner, clearer, more in tune, etc. But the energy and exitement are so much better conveyed on this live performance recording that I find I enjoy them more !  Not true for every track on the CD, but these two songs really work better.  Yes's song "Yours Is No Disgrace"  gives me the same feeling if you compare the studio version from "The Yes Album", and the live version on "yessongs". This concert recording is actually not that great sound-wise, but the performance is just so much more alive and vigorous.   You know what it was like to stand in the crowd in front of Marillion at the Week-end  last year ( BTW Rodrick did an amazing job behind the mixing desk for those three nights ). Sometimes great performances can be caught on tape , and if carefully recorded some of the spirit can be captured.    I can't wait for the Week-end CD's and DVD's to be released !

Now that you mention it, Steve, I, too, find the live versions of "Seperated Out" and "Between You and Me" better on Anorak Live in the UK than on their studio album.

I think the live version of Forgotten Sons on Real to Reel is better than the studio version on Script. Same for Market Square Heroes.

You know, I have to side with you and Joren on this. I do prefer "Separated Out" and (especially) "Between You And Me" live than the studio. The energy on the latter really comes through from the stage.

Not sure if it's better, but "Neverland" live is pure magic. What a way to end the weekend last year.

BTW, have they nailed down a venue? Is it the L'Olympia again?

Prime example of a live version surpassing the studio: "This Strange Engine". Probably the definitive live Marillion song for me and buries the studio version by leaps and bounds. Especially on Popular Music. What a killer performance.

Pardon my ignorance fellows, but on the latest RTV installments the band joke about the "Rochester" release. What specific show are they going on about ?

"Rochester" was a sort of gift for those who donated to the tour fund back in the late 90's. Each donor got a 2 disc live concert recording (recorded in Rochester, NY, I believe) from the This Strange Engine tour. It's like the holy grail of the Hogarth years and always goes for a lot of money when it's on ebay.

Thanks Eric. Yeah, I did a bit of research after I asked the question and found the info as well. Have you been able to secure a copy for your collection ?

I put in a bid here and there on ebay, but it goes for a pretty penny and usually gets too rich for my blood.

Have you guys seen this? http://www.townsend-records.co.uk/product.php?pId=10003588&pType=1

I've already got the Wembly show on FRC, and the first disc looks like the audio from the Stoke Row.
