I just asked my dad what he thought about the convention in Holland, and he said we'll see... Now I just need to get him addicted over the next few months

It'd be fantastic if we could go, though

Steve.

I'd like to see the shows held more in the downtown area. The L'Olympia is a fine venue, but just sort of felt detached from the nice downtown area. We went down to Brutopia for a meet-n-greet and really loved that area.

That one place across the street from L'Olympia served a mean breakfast, though!

E
The downtown area near Crescent street doesn't really have any venues like L'Olympia. There's the Bell Center, but that's an arena for 21000 ....OK if you're Yes, but Marillion wouldn't be able to fill any significant part of it, and the bill for Lucy would be staggering. A bit west of L'Olympia is Theatre Saint Denis, which is a beautiful place and neighborhood, but all plush seats and no mosh area for H to repeat his crowd surf stunt.  It's too bad they don't push the event out into May when the weather is warmer and more agreable, and find an outdoor location so they can repeat all the outdoor stuff they do in Holland.
Steve.

My Fish CD's came in yesterday from the UK. Spun Raingods With Zippos early this morning. That is one FINE album !  Love the track Rites Of Passage.  I'll give it another go around after hours . Field of Crows is the other new one I have...will have to go through it too.

Steve

I spun Raingods last week and that is a top shelf disc. Love "The Plague Of Ghosts".

Do you have 13th Star? If not, highly recommended.

I don't hear a lot about Fellini Dreams. Personally, I like the disc. It's not up there with 13th Star, Vigil or Raingods, but still a good collection.

E

The only Fish disc that i'd had previously was 13th Star, and I agree it's a great listen. I'll get to know the two new ones over the next few days, then go back to Fish's store for Vigil, etc.  The prices online are just great...two CD's + freight from the UK ran me only $22.00 Canadian total !

Joel, I can almost guarantee that if your dad attended, he'd be blown away. To experience it is quite special.

Bring it onClapClapClapClap

And holding it at Center Parcs will also keep my wife & son occupied during the gigsLOL

What sort of things are there to keep the women and children entertained while the men folk enjoy a night of Marillion? Still not sure if they'll make the trip with me, but it's a possibility.

E

Eric - Center Parcs are one of the biggest holiday operators in Europe - think of an upmarket holiday camp and you will be somewhere near. There is swimming, riding, walking, restaurants, bars, play areas, shows & so on. Friends who have been swear by it as a family holiday destination.

Gave "This Strange Engine" a spin - The title track certainly has some really superb moments, especially the wakemanesque synthesizer and some nice guitar flourishes. BUT and this is a big BUT - they should have had the prog-sense to lengthen those highlights and REALLY make it at epic (and the end is ruined by the god-awful singer's shouting.....).
The first seven tracks are awful but I really think that Marillion were trying awfully hard NOT to be a progressive rock band and hoping to attract the AOR mass-market. I generally love pomposity and expected synth arpegios all over the shop interspersed with ghostly guitar and l;ong passages of ambience (loads of feely guitar.....) Also hoping for some piano virtuosity and maybe a bit of hammond ??
Instead we get the Hogarth show - and I just can't stand his voice, don't know what it is - but just think that he should be fronting a Journey/REO Speedwagon type band - he just isn't a neo-prog singer for me.
Ho-hum - Looks like Marillion & the first part of Misplaced Childhood was as good as it was going to get.
Sorry folks.....

My wife and I were meeting friends for dinner tonight. We got there a little early, so we ran over to Borders Books and they had the Classic Rock magazine prog edition with Marillion on the cover. Needless to say, I HAD to pick it up!!!

Hogarth clearly divides opinion against many people. Last night, we had friends round for a couple of drinks, and I had done them a comilation CD, mainly consisting of symphonic, neo, and folk prog, and metal, with some other eclectic stuff thrown in for good measure.

She simply loved the Hogarth era Marillion, and he loathed it. There...the H era encapsulated in a simple sentence.

However, I do think it unfair to say that he should be fronting a Journey/REO type band.  For a start, he is quintessentially English, and has NEVER, to my knowledge, made a record of that ilk.

Marillion without Fish is simply...*YAWN*. Fish without Marillion is just an old rock star (I can say that , I'm  2 years older than Mr. Dick) trying to do things with a once incredible voice that age, tobacco, who knows what else...simply wont let him do anymore. Point being...maybe its time to either 1. Clutch at straws and go for a ...after the Genesis failure, dont even want to SAY the word reunion, or 2. pretend that there exists a Marillion as it was 20 years ago. Which shall we choose?

I really enjoyed the whole piece, and the H interview is exceptional. BTW, I still have sympathy with him when he states he would have changed not just the image, but the name of the band. It has, commercially, been a dead weight to them.

When AoS was released, Q magazine stated in their review that had it been released by any other band, it would have been a monster seller.

Latest from the band, of interest to those of you with the Xbox 360 console:

Marillion now on Rock Band Network,

If you have Rock Band 2 for Xbox 360, to go to the Rock Band Network section of the in-game Music Store to look up Marillion and find "Whatever Is Wrong With You". A playable trial is available for free (allows you to play the first minute or so), and the full track only costs $1 (80 Microsoft Points).

If you are interested in a full video preview of all instruments, check it out here:

Have fun!

Well Laz, I think you're doing a terrific job in keeping the peace and harmony on this forum, I have to say. It is a very tough job, I can imagine, with all those people whining (no offence to those holding the opinion!) about Marillion being dead, boring nowadays.

Really, lots of respect fort that!Clap

I have listening the original album, i have to hear the second cd of the remaster, i will do today, when i go home from job.

I have been very impresed by the keyboard and guitar, also the bass playing is great, but i find the drums a little weak and sometimes doing the time keeper thing with the 80's type of drumming.

But i think that my favourite tracks are Here Knows, You Know, The Web, Garden Party and Forgotten Songs.

I have never hear before Grendel, so i will take a chance to hear it as well.

I have purchase the oficial bootleg box set, i hope it's worth it.

Well, the drummer at their first album (Michael Pointer - who in '95 founded Arena)  wasn't very skilled at the time. In my opinion, it is a good thing Trewavas was on spot with his bass playing (though he has grown a lot too, since!) to rectify the somewhat standard, lousy drum playing.

Is this your first Marillion encounter? or have you listened to other albums in the past already?

I know this isn't a Gazpacho appreciation thread, but they've been closely associated with Marillion in the past and there are some similarities. I'm spinning Night right now and this is a damn fine disc. I prefer Tick Tock, but any fan of latter day Marillion will surely appreciate these guys.
