I absolutely love Marbles, easily in my top 5 albums ever, although I can get how some people wouldn't enjoy them compared to the Fish era. I guess thats what I love about Marillion though, there's something for every mood of mine

-Joel

Joel, I agree that Rothery is an expressive guitarist, in much the way that Dave Gilmour is with Floyd. Rothers is very much a sound shaper , and chooses what he plays carefully for each song, For him it's the end result that is important, and not so much any spotlight on his playing. It's a Marillion thing, where the whole is much greater than the sum of it's component parts.  You mention Steve Howe ( who has always been one of my faves going wayyyyyyyy  back. ) , and that man is certainly accomplished, yet I disgaree and think that he is not nearly as emotive as Rothery. A better analogy would be Steve Hackett, who can pretty much do it all, from majestic ,sweeping lines and washes, to delicate and intricate fills and flourishes. Mr Hackett can also shred like few others in his genre, and then play and compose finely crafted classical pieces.
Yay for Marbles though, certainly one of  Marillion's best.
Steve Wink

Steve Hackett you say? Well, I only know Hackett from Genesis, I have to admit, but with them I don't think he's very emotive - he is a brilliant player and composer in my opinion, but emotion isn't one of his best skills on his Genesis work, IMO.         Is he very emotive on his solo albums? It could easily be so, for when musicians go solo, they tend to approach music rather differently than they did when they were with a band. Maybe that's because when solo virtually all the writer's input goes out from one guy - rather than working as a whole, as you've stated, something which I underline strongly, was the case with Marillion.

JorenTongue

Hackett's work with Genesis, as a whole, does not really reflect what he went on to do on his own. The sticking point when he was with the band was that the others would not agree to let him contribute more of the songwriting. This was really a shame because he had so much to offer, and even has a fairly decent singing voice !  His evolution as a musician and composer post-Genesis is really rather remarkable-you should really explore his portfolio. I'll add a comment about Steve Rothery, and say that it would be really interesting to hear what he would do on his own ( Not that I would want him to leave Marillion )-Imagine what an instrmental album full of his guitarwork would sound like !
Steve

Why then I'll make sure to check his solo career out; any suggestions on which album I should start with first? And indeed, I wonder what a real solo album by Mr. Roths would sound like!Shocked But, if that means, leaving Marillion - Hell no!!! He's got enough room within the band to let his creative juices flow.

Joren,
Any of his first three - Voyage of the Acolyte (Got Rutherford & Collins on so it's a sort of Genesis CD)
Please Don't Touch or Spectral Mornings - All excellent IMHO.
Ace Tracks - Ace of wands, Voyage of the Heirophant, Narnia, Every Day & Spectral Mornings.....

M27Barney had some good suggestions from his early work. Later albums like To Watch The Storms, and Wild Orchids are excellent as well.  The latest disk, Out Of The Tunnel's Mouth is quite fine too. Stay away from his early to mid 80's material ( Cured, Highly Strung, Till We Have Faces ) at first-some of it is not bad, but he lost his path a bit and it sounds very dated.
Enjoy.

For those of you curious about what Rothery "would" sound like outside of Marillion, you do not have to wait. Just buy the superb Wishing Tree albums - sheer class!!

Thanks, guys, I'm going to look out for one of his first three or 21st century records.
Are there, by the way, any albums of him with a New Age or Classical touch?

I've been listening a lot more to Happiness is the Road lately and am really coming to appreciate it. True, there are too many middle of the road songs, and nothing at all is outright bad, but it's also true that very few songs are pure excellence. And it's not like some songs could really be cut and the album would have a different feel; it's all pretty moderate tempo. I'm coming to see the quality of the album production. Whereas I used to see it as a totally negative sterilization and over-equalizing of highs and lows, I recognize that it does give the album a sort of laid back feel, though I can't help but wonder if it would have been 5000x better if it was mostly raw production. Or something at least with more dynamics.

Anyway, it's a high 7/10.

Good morning Brasileia !   Steve has two Orchestral Classical albums,  Midsummer Night's Dream , and Metamorpheus. ( Steve on Classical Guitar + full Orchestra ). As well there are three albums that a pretty much solo classical guitar, Bay of Kings, Momentum, and Tribute. His lightest fare is the Sketches Of Satie CD he did with his Brother John on flute.  My favourite from all of these is Metamorpheus.
Enjoy.

I spun Raingods last week and that is a top shelf disc. Love "The Plague Of Ghosts".

Do you have 13th Star? If not, highly recommended.

I don't hear a lot about Fellini Dreams. Personally, I like the disc. It's not up there with 13th Star, Vigil or Raingods, but still a good collection.

I'd like to see the shows held more in the downtown area. The L'Olympia is a fine venue, but just sort of felt detached from the nice downtown area. We went down to Brutopia for a meet-n-greet and really loved that area.

That one place across the street from L'Olympia served a mean breakfast, though!

What sort of things are there to keep the women and children entertained while the men folk enjoy a night of Marillion? Still not sure if they'll make the trip with me, but it's a possibility.
