Hi Richard - a very belated welcome from me to the gang as well. Great to have you on board. Isn't it interesting, and welcome, how the thread has now expanded to Fish solo as well as the band's material? I very much welcome this, and will introduce a new part to it. Has anyone ever heard a worse solo LP than Songs from the Mirror, which surely marked the big guy's nadir, just when the band were hitting great heights of creativity? BTW ALL - THIS IS THE 40TH PAGE OF OUR GREAT THREAD!! * 10 |

Is that the album of covers he did? I hate all covers discs. Doubt I'll be getting the new Peter Gabriel disc. E |

Yes, I think it's a good think, we've expanded the range of this thread to Fish's solo career aswell! I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with the Songs from the Mirror, but is it really that awful? Doubt it then, that I'll be getting it, though at some point in life I probably will: I'd like to purchase his whole discography. I have heared the cover "Boston Teaparty" from Sushi - Live in Utrecht, though, it didn't suck to my ears, but then again, I'm not familiar with the original and if the whole album were of this niveau - you're probably right. Although I am a big fan of H era Marillion and the passion and drama of Hogarth's songs and performances – there is still no doubting the lyrical talents of Fish who surely must stand out as penning some of the finest lyrics ever in Prog? So while we are talking about Fish in this thread I thought it might be interesting to re-visit some of the classic Fish era Marillion songs and then - maybe, for contributors to do the same and add their opinions of the all time great Fish lyrics… my favourites are -
…From the dole queue to the regiment a profession in a flash, Garden Party held today, invites call the debs to play, It was a wedding ring, Destined to be found in a cheap hotel, Lost in a kitchen sink or thrown in a wishing well…

Fish definitely has some of the most poetically wordy lyrics I've ever read; my favourite are probably Sugar Mice, Fugazi, but most of what Fish wrote with Marillion was truly stunning.

Fish was (and probably is) a big poetic talent. He did think in later years that some of his earlier lyrics were a bit too much, like "A morning mare rides down the starless shutters of my eyes", which he didn't like anymore. But an interviewer once remarked that Fish doesn't say that he's sad, but that he says: "The man in the mirror has sad eyes".
I suppose he was very much inspired by Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill, but he has his own, great style. |

Good morning everyone ! ( I guess it's good afternoon if you're across the pond ) I should have thought of this sooner, but it looks like the best place to purchase Fish's material is...well... his website ! I just ordered two 2CD's for about 16 pounds inculding delivery, about $ 30 Canadian. Not too bad considering the price of imports at most of the brick and mortar joints locally.
Hey, the PG covers CD, "Scratch My Back" is not you're typical performance. It may be a bit sedate, but not bad at all. Peter is not your average artist by any means.
Enjoy.
Steve

^When I was looking for a copy of Sunsets On Empire, the two I came across on ebay were about 80USD each for used CD's; good to hear you found some good deals (I was amazed at how cheap they were there as well), and hope you enjoy the albums, Steve!

Yes it is. Track listing here: 1. Question (Moody Blues) (6:38) 2. Boston Tea Party (Alex Harvey Band) (4:25) 3. Fearless (Pink Floyd) (6:15) 4. Apeman (The Kinks) (5:54) 5. Hold Your Head Up (Argent) (3:43) 6. Solo (Sandy Denny) (4:09) 7. I Know What I Like (Genesis) (4:17) 8. Jeepster (Marc Bolan And T-Rex) (4:30) 9. The Seeker (The Who) (3:17) 10. Five Years (David Bowie) (5:19) An absolute stinker of an LP, and I am surprised it is rated as high as 2.22 on the Archives. If I ever get round to reviewing it, that will go down. BTW - I really think you would enjoy Gabriel Eric, in spite of your aversion to cover LPs. I think it is a blinder, and will give it 4 stars I think when I do review it. Exceptional arrangements and THAT voice. |

Yeah, I can't recommend it either. PG does put his own spin on them, but the spin is nearly identical on every track, which is a real bummer.
Right now I'm listening to Steven Wilson (from Porcupine Tree)'s Cover Version discs, in which he covers a pop track then follows it up with an original song inspired by that song. Although I also usually avoid covers, these discs are brilliant covers. |

I should go in there and drop a Strange Engine on 'em. Kicks the @#%! out of "Grendel", IMO.

This Strange Engine is pure brilliance! But in virtually every way non-comparable with Grendel, IMO, so TSE wouldn't kick the sh*t out of it. They are both very different genres, IMO. Isn't that great? Marillion are so turbulent and moving/progressive, every album they make has a different approuch, they never stick with a formula, that has brought them succes or something: it's not about the money, it's about their love for music! Vigil is a very strong album, Joel! I particularly like the Scottish influences, which are more noticeable on Fish's first two records than later on

Marillion are a band that sort of went off my radar in the early nineties - I was far more impressed with Pendragon, IQ, Twelfth Night and Pallas. I saw them live in Manchester in the early eighties - got attacked by Fish ! (Small venue - The Gallery) - The demo tapes were impressive - versions of the Web and Forgotton Sons - When these were recorded and released on Script for a Jester Tear they completeley RUINED them......I don't like Rotheray on Guitar either - Compare and Contrast to Stolte, Hackett, Howe - not in the same league...Anyway last year I bought a few of the later CD's - Marbles etc and to be honest I thought they were garbage - I may have to re-listen perhaps, because I was listening at the same time as my falling in love with TFK's - However side one of Misplaced Childhood - Good stuff and a lot better than ANYTHING else they produced in my opinion.
