Joel, I'd get Raingods With Zippos before Sunsets On Empire. Vigil, Raingods and 13th Star would be the ones with which I'd start out.

Steve, I still can't get into it. Everybody is praising the redone version of "Interior Lulu", but it's a train wreck. There's no flow to it. It's like they've cut and pasted it together. "It's Not Your Fault" is very forgettable, too. Just very repetitive and lifeless.

I'll keep going to reach for it, but I'll just think to myself, "You know, I'm just not in the mood." I may re-visit it one day, but I just can't get into it right now.

Eric. it was probably something the in water I was drinking yesterday morning...   Yeah, they do rip up "Lulu" quite a bit, and it just cries out for some more development....it's too bad they didn't try to take it any further in the studio.
It's early in the office here in Montreal. No-one else is in yet, and I have the lights off with just my desk lamp on. I'm in a "Fish" mood to start the Friday, so I have "Script For A Jester's Tear" playing on the iPod. Not as good as the "H" era, but you know I'm starting to like him quite a bit more.
Have a great end to your week.

Steve, a thousand miles away in a darkened office in Kansas City, MO, somebody is doing the same thing (except with Vigil In The Wildneress Of Mirrors).

Haven't listened to Script in quite a while. I know there will always be a debate between Fish vs. h; however, one thing is abundantly clear, and that is Marillion made an upgrade in drummers. Pointer does nothing for me.

Yep, I'll agree on that - Pointer just wasn't good enough (though I have to admit I like his work with Arena - he definitely has grown a lot). Pete's bass line, however, really makes it all work for me with the drums and the rest of the instruments - I have to admit that I'm always more fond of Pete's bass than - although most of the time superbly played - of Rothery's solo. What I also think is very funny and nice to see is that you can really hear the band grow with every album, both with playing as a band and just individual skills. I don't have that with other bands very much.

As for "Interior Lulu" and the rest of Less = More (how cheesy a title can be thought of, by the wayLOL), I really can't see what repels you guys from it - it is a very decent CD with very good moods and nice moves with less obvious instruments; now, of course I don't think it is as good as let say Somewhere Else, but then again, I don't see it as a full studio album - more like a very nice bonus disc. Like a bonus disc other bands release with covers from bands they love, well, Marillion made such a disc with songs from their own repetoire. But, hey, different people, different tastes.

Speaking of RWZ, I find "Tumble Down" better than its Marillion antithesis "Between You and Me" (Well, I think they are overall comparable, anaway) What do you think?

I guess L=M is good for what it is, but I just find unplugged albums to be so stale. Perhaps if it was a live project (i.e. A Piss-Up At A Brewery) then it may have struck me a bit better than an unplugged studio disc.

I downloaded a performance from the L=M tour and I liked it. I don't listen to it very often, but it's a good set. I guess one performance was recorded for a DVD, so we'll have that shortly. I'm also assuming that one night of next year's convention will be devoted to an unplugged set (which I could do without).

I agree with you on unplugged performances; unless the songs were originally recorded that way, I generally find them to sound a bit lifeless and dull in comparison; L=M was a good effort, but I think its the disc I pick up the least from 2009.

Joel, they could have (somewhat) converted me with a memorable new song, but "It's Not Your Fault" could be the weakest song on the entire disc.

Hi Guys !  Perhaps they could have really upped the action on L=M by going more over the top ? Imagine if they had added some really out there violin work by a guest like Nigel Kennedy, or if Mark had gone into a cathedral and recorded some really heavy pipe organ on a track like " Interior Lulu" or "Quartz". What about some screaming bagpipe ? ( A nod and a wink to Fish perhaps ? )  I know the work they did was a cut above what other people have done on a "un-plugged" album, but it's unfortunate that they did not take it farther and really stretch the sound and arrangements.

Yes, well, I agree with Progfan that they should have taken it farther than they have - I love the violin as an addition to the old prog line-up more than I love the more often used German Flute.

I have been fortunate enough to see pre and post Hogarth shows.I am a die hard Marillion fan. Hogarth is an excellent writer and singer. I like all Marillion works. Fish did the twist on my table on my b-day at The Coachhouse in California.

Finished up Raingods With Zippos on the way home. "The Plague Of Ghosts" could be the greatest thing Fish has ever done as a solo artist. Amazing song.

Welcome to the group, Richard.

Eric, I have "The 13th Star" and enjoy that album quite a bit. Fish's voice has really matured nicely and I think in many ways it's better now than in his Marillion days.   I've tried to track down "Raingods" but it seems to be a little scarce through my regular online providers or the central HMV in Montreal. I guess I'll have to run up to Freeson for it. Did you pick anything up there when you were here last April ?

13th Star could quite possibly be my favorite Fish solo disc. Especially "Arc Of A Curve". Beautiful tune.

Oh yes, I did!!! Me, Lisa and Julie went up there after breakfast our first full day in Montreal and I could've plunked down a boat load of cash there. I thought Rush-Mor in Milwaukee had a great prog selection, but Freeson wins hands down.

I only picked up Ghosts by the Italian prog band The Watch. It was $30 Canadian, so it was quite pricey. I showed remarkable restraint, though.
