Well I like Jazz-Rock at least as much as RIO, possibly more depending on the band. So I'd say it's a safe bet I'll enjoy it.

Then I guess, as you said, that it's a fair choice.
Yeah I mentionned it earlier. Great band. Edited by Tsevir Leirbag - August 12 2009 at 22:04 |

Opus-5 and Maneige are also on my list to check out, unfortunately for me the list is growing nearly exponentially and the amount of money I have to spend on music isn't...ah well, a little patience will go a long way.

The only one I know here is Harmonium, and I love it.

Hate to add to the list, but I need to plug Rouge Ciel again - just absolutely fantastic. |

Begin with Maneige, it is fantastic! (Greatest album, in my opinion: Les porches)

Then you'll have to check some other bands... They're all really good.

There's also a Progressive Rock festival in Montréal, QC; it's called FMPM (Festival des musiques progressives de Montréal or Montréal's Progressive Music Festival). This year's setlist is Miriodor, Rouge Ciel, Le Orme, Excubus, Magenta, Three Friends (Sold Out) and Saga (Sold Out)
I'll try to go, for sure! Edited by Tsevir Leirbag - August 15 2009 at 16:21 |

On the contrary, the more items on the list the more gems I have to look forward to in the future, gives me more incentive to make sure I do well in school, get a good job, etc. Any specific album suggestions to start with the band, or should I just dive in randomly? |

Don't get ME started !!!
yoou guys know how opposed to genres exploiting origins or nationality, and I still don't agree on RPI, although could come to terms if one day the multi-genre tagging becomes a reality
I probably added half if not 2/3 of the Quebecois he database (lately Agape, Demi-Heure and boule de Son)
and I had to convince M@X about Maneige's addition , Proglucky about Conventum and Connivence ......because the Quebecois don't even realize themselves how great it was during the 70's
So you can imagine how I "hate"prog from LBP
But "LBP prog" should never be a genre or subgenre, because it's simply not musically sensible. I would say that a good half the band played foklk rock, then some more played jazz-rock, some blues-derived prog, other electronic etc....
it's just viable.... ditto from BegianProg Chamber
thisd from a Belgo-Quebecois

They only have two releases right now - their s/t debut is my favorite of the two, with a very wide variety of style, a very eclectic album. The second is also fantastic and is a bit darker, a bit more aggressive, and definitely more "RIO". |

I would say most of the '70s quebecois artists were adding progressive shades to their music :
Beau Dommage had a full album side of one progressive song. Michel Lefrançois. Robert Charlebois. Paul Baillargeon. Gino Vannelli. Les Seguin. La Nouvelle Frontiere. Le Match. Offenbach. Ville Emard Blues Band. June Wallack. Diane Dufresne. Jim Corcoran & Bertrand Gosselin. Claude Dubois, Jacques Michel, Gilles Valiquette, Gilles Vigneault, Guy Trépanier, Jean-Pierre Ferland, Claude Léveillée on some albums, even Felix Leclerc. Franck Dervieux Raoul Duguay should be in Prog Archives. Some of his albums were completely prog. He was also a member of L'Infonie. Etc. Edited by MichelNeurophile - August 23 2009 at 15:28 |

I can see you're from Québec! Yeah, I agree with what you said. I'm now trying to add June Wallack to this site. Offenbach, I think it's already here (it must!). Robert Charlebois has some prog elements but he had different eras where he made different music.
Aren't you the one who posted Octobre's L'oiseau Rouge and Charlebois' Québec Love or Tout écartillé (I don't remember) on YouTube? And I'm not sure if you knew but Raoûl Duguay also participated to Maneige's Les porche. Bienvenue sur le site! Edited by Tsevir Leirbag - August 23 2009 at 11:14 |

I will miss Miriodor's gig at the Gésu, Montréal because it was too much expensive; this month, I already paid 95$ to see Excubus, Rouge Ciel, DFA and Le Orme on a saturday. Miriodor is playing on the next day and it costs 35, if I remember well.
How were they live? Edited by Tsevir Leirbag - August 23 2009 at 19:59 |

They were fantastic. They were the first of three bands, and the next two (Izz and some fusion band who's name I can't recall) seemed a real let down in comparison (and Izz is a great band). They are Avante/RIO, but very melodic. Would love to see them again, but I'm far from Quebec myself |
