Who cares? As for me, I wouldn't care if it was the Government of North Korea the one making money off this website.... As long as I have such a gigantic prog-database and a chance to talk with people and write reviews, I don't give a f**k. And, for that matter, I actually HOPE SOMEONE's MAKING MONEY, because in this consuminst world we live in, is the only thing that assures me the site will stay alive. So, whoever makes money or not, thank you very much, and I hope you are rich!

Actually your question is a good one. Of sorts ...
I hope the owners are making profit by now, because there was a time when they were losing on it.
On the other hand, most collabs are doing it freely and willingly. So should there be major profits, it would be nice to compensate those helping out on the content subjects and therefore creating more attractions to the site.
Well contrary to Gnosis2000 and Progressive ears which rely mainly on donations (those site are add-free), I am not sure (even doubt that) PA is receiving many donations.
On those other sites, donators receive a distinctive sign on their profiles. Here I do not think there is anything planned. Edited by Sean Trane - January 16 2007 at 10:42 |

I am not a party to the financial aspects of the site, but my understanding is that the adverts more or less cover the costs. If we want to see major improvements to the site, that will cost money as our benevolent webmaster only has so much time to give to the work required.
Any thoughts on how the revenue streams could be improved, or offers of collaboration in exploiting the potential for the site to generate income, would be welcome.

What I can't understand is what is causing the costs. I mean, my own server (the one running progtology.com) costs me 40 EUR/month, and that includes all traffic - not just the very small number of visitors that it currently has.
Just out of curiosity: What kind of server does Progarchives.com use? My server is a 3700+ Athlon 64 with 1GB RAM. ![]() Edited by MikeEnRegalia - January 16 2007 at 11:04 |

Sorry, don't know about the server Mike.
Also, I don't know about "all the costs", It could be that the advertising brings in Eur40 a month, and that's the cost of running the server for all I know. Of course, the server itself will cost something, as will any hardware upgrades which are required.

Given that a lot of people use adblock and similar tools, they won't see the ads. I also know from my own site that AdSense doesn't pay a lot: I received 5 clicks on the first day I joined, and that adds up to a total of $1.71. Google only pays you when you reach the $100 mark, so you need a lot of people clicking adds to really make money... |

^ I'm pretty sure that the PA ads are clicked more often ... Adblock or not. But then again I doubt that the online casino & dating ads pay more than a few cents per click.
![]() Of course there's also the affiliate links to the various CD stores. |

What a child. You know, the best thing about forums is being able to post opinions so other people can read them, wheteher they agree with them or not. And whether one cares about what the others think or not. It's a forum. Very mature. |

I think the attitude "who cares?" is just a bit more childish and immature than "I care." Wouldn't you agree, Mr. Maturity? Edited by bluetailfly - January 16 2007 at 22:26 |

I honestly hope they are making some deserved profit, the owners have invested a lot of time, money and effort to create this site from nothing. All of us who collaborate do it for love to Prog and we knew from the start this is the way things would be, so if we don't complain, why should anybody? Iván

Yes! Yes! Exactly! Whoever owns this site, I wish upon them vast riches, vast vast riches. And as they mount up (the riches), I will be at the bottom applauding you and your fantastic website, of which I have been an intermittant member, but have always enjoyed my time here, even when I argued that "Thick as a Brick" should not by any stretch be the #1 prog ablum. But to get back to the point, if the owners are making money, I commend them and wish I could do the same. Thank you very much. Thank you and thank you for the website. I really like it and hope it succeeds. I am not joking or being facetious, I MEAN IT! |

For what it's worth, I think this is a fair enough question, although I don't suppose you'll get an answer. Can't say as I really care if anyone is making money here, but I wouldn't begrudge them if they were. I do agree some of the ads are a bit on the questionable side, but I know I run a few small sites and used to have some hosted advertising, and I didn't always have a choice as to what specific ads appeared. It was more that a specific space was 'rented'. A good ad blocker will prevent them being an annoyance in any case.... |

Who's "begrugding" them. I don't understand this. It's a rather odd response to what I was asking; like "caring" about this is somehow so unseemly and assumes disapproval. I was simply wondering who owned the website and if it was turning into a viable business venture. Because since I first joined, it does seem to have grown quite a bit. That's what prompted my question. ![]() Edited by bluetailfly - January 16 2007 at 22:59 |

I would agree if the subject matter of discussion actually has anything to do with you....
I would also agree if the comment you made about a post had better arguments than "I don't care that you don' care", like if I was making fun of you or your post. What I said is I DON'T CARE, as a COMMENT TO A TOPIC, (you maybe would agree that that's what forums are about, wouldn't you?).... So my I DON'T CARE (I said I don't give a f**k actually, we are grown up, or did it hurt you my use of a BLEEPED OUT obscenity?) so if I say I DON'T CARE, why did you have to do the very mature comment I COULDN'T CARE LESS THAN YOU DON'T CARE.

You just can't have a discussion based on ARGUMENTS, can you?
Ok my friend, if it makes you happy, you win. I shouldn't have dared to criticize the subject of this thread and I shouldn't have dard not to care. I shouldn' t have dared to give my opinion in such a pointless discussion. I'll refrain myself of posting opinions in your polls, lest you become upset.
Feliz?
Anyway, have a good night.
