Hi,

So happy to see ANGE represented here ... it has been one of my favorite bands for more than 40 years ... outstanding stuff ... made me cry.

More:
Epitath ... For me one of the most dramatic ever........ such a beautiful piece ... and so with it, even today with so many wars.

Hi,

I like this version a lot, the original when I first got the album a few months after it was out ... I got into them on Lark's Tongues in Aspic, which I liked and this album was even better then ...

The one thing ... that version of this piece with the 3 drummers in the toob is also fantastic ... and what a treat for Mel Collins to still be there to do it ... far out ... but one thing in these three albums ... Bill Bruford is very good and far out.

Hi,

One last comment ... all of this stuff, at the time I was hearing it was considered "art rock", a lot of which became known as "progressive" ... it's kinda strange seeing it considered "dramatic" since the main feature of the artistic movements in the arts was a strong dramatic effect, and that did not mean ... LOUD ... which is all folks show these days, it could be said.

Let's look at a few things ... so 2001, was not dramatic? With its huge opening and some other moments? SW had a massive opening with huge sound all over the venues, including under your seat. "HAIR" featured some ... nudity, though it was not like Hustler or Penthouse ... it was more like Playboy covered. So both the concert in Monterey and Woodstock were not "dramatic" ... the film tried to add to it some, but it was all there, especially in the Bay Area concert with Jimmy going nuts and Jefferson Airplane asked to play again.

I kinda thought the point of it all was ... make it strong ... and loud was not exactly the main thing, then ... though it became a few years later about how loud one could get ... already The Rolling Stones and Deep Purple owned the honor!

OK, instrumental, so no dramatic story, but...

Just the first one to come to my mind also. I might add Shadow of the Hierophant from Hackett and Darkness from VdGG.

My favorite version would have to be a live one from the Wetton years. For me that's the original version. First, because I heard those versions first, but also because that's the way it was played first, and in my mind the theme melody was made to be played with a violin (I still believe that's actually the way it was written, though I have nothing to prove me right). However, it's one version in particular, the one on Collectable King Crimson Vol 1, disc 1 (Mainz), that one gets it all right... and the ending, played with the electric guitar, is just the most powerful one for my taste. There's a video of the band playing the song "live" with this very line-up (though no audience is shown, so maybe it's sort of live in the studio), it's not the exact same version from Mainz, but it's the other closest version I have heard, and it's nice to see the band playing the song.

Same here, but then I realised that the OP is seeking dramatic prog songs from the 70s, as it's clear in the topic title, whereas "Epitaph" still belongs to the sixties... Perhaps this one as a substitute?

King Crimson – In the Wake of Poseidon
