^^ Peter, Jim...
...how have the puffin populations been holding up in the last 5 years on the other side of the Atlantic? Owing to the effects of 'climate change' parts of the the UK has seen population crashes of Puffins, Fulmars and Kittiwakes (among other birds) owing to their food supply, such as sand eels migrating north to colder waters. This has forced the adult birds fiurther afield in search of food, and ultimately having to desert their nesting sites...

Judging by the number of the littl'uns which buzzed us on frequent occasions, I'd say the population is hale & hearty, Jared.

^ I don't have any official Newfoundland seabird stats for you, Fanny, but I can tell you that I've been viewing many of the same nesting areas since the mid 80s, and they seemed as numerous as ever this year. (Nor did I hear any locals speak of diminishing numbers.)
Tellingly, the whales also continue to migrate there in summer, in droves. Many whales and puffins feast upon the same small fish -- capelin -- which also seem plentiful in our waters.
So far.
Now, here's a shot of Sandy Cove, a nice beach near our rental house in Elliston. Water temperature: around a bracing 8 C -- that shrinking violet Jimberly refused to get in past his wee toesies, but I swam manfully, of course.
(I sang soprano the rest of the day, though! )
^ That's my daughter and son out there, BTW -- they come from hardy stock!
Of course, boats figure largely in my seaside holiday pics:

Oh, that is bad news indeed, Rach. Mr. D. lived in Marlborough for a bit and I few people saw him staggering about the town. He's not even talented. Edited by James - August 19 2008 at 16:57 |

I take my hat off to anyone who shows that level commitment to such an important task, over such a long period of time...
...and I'm really pleased to hear the numbers are holding up on your side of the pond...
the seabird colonies in the UK seam to be alternating between satisfactory years and very poor years...but I genuinely fear for their long term survival....

sadly, that's what happens when you try to go 'mainstream' Rachel... tell the boys that they're better off 'headling' to 100 prog-nerds in an obscure village hall that no-one's heard of...

On a happier note & now we're pretty much all settled in our new home & know where we are, the "Formerly Steve's Even Greyer Room" suffix has been removed.
Ladies & gentlemen, courtesy of Steve, our glorious landlord, we now officially reside in The Shed Huzzah! Edited by Jim Garten - August 20 2008 at 03:21 |

Sorry; maybe I didn't express myself very well... I didn't mean this in any way as a criticism of Pendragon; merely as a statement concerning the ridiculously unfair state of play within the British music industry...
Pendragon will at least always be appreciated by the 100 prog nerds in the village hall....

this is what i thought - some have recently even been fined huge amounts of money for passing around games files, though i think virtually every recording on vinyl has been published onto CD by now.
sad about your Moonfest being cancelled , will anybody ever book Docherty again?
great pics, Peter!
the Puffin issue in UK is worrying, also a large influx of Jellyfish to our shores is causing concern, they sting like crazy

There are thousands of old vinyl (and cassette for that matter) releases that have never been released officially (and unofficially) on CD, so there's still a bit of a market for re-releasing albums.
I can only hope some quality albums will be released on CD, 'cause they're impossible to find in their original form. If someone can find me an original copy of Shub-Niggurath's self-titled cassette, then I'd be very grateful. I'm just going to have to wait for a possible future CD re-release, I guess. |

^ Thanks Mystic! Glad you like the pics.
Here are some from our stay in Boston (a great party town with lots of cool history, BTW):
^ Leaving Boston Harbor, for a 45-minute ferry ride to Salem (the "witch" town)
^ A very old house in Salem, next to the Witch memorial
^ On the trip back, my dear wife Kathy strikes a fetching "Jackie O" pose next to the ol' "Stars & Bars"
