A friend and I were talking about cover songs and how some bands do justice to the original while others completely annihilate; and then there are very few that actually do a better job than the original. The conversation evolved into us talking about bands covering other bands albums. It was easy to match a song that a band could do a decent cover of, but finding an entire album seemed a bit more tricky. After about a week I came up with a couple that I thought would work. Sorry if this topic has been done before search came back with nothing. Rush covering Eric Johnson's Tones. I've listened to Rush from early childhood and they are easily one of my favorite bands. I heard Eric Johnson for the first time when he opened for Steve Miller. He blew me away and I've been hooked ever since. I think what drew me to EJ was him and Lifeson have a similar sound ( at least to my ear ) and the album Tones in particular has many tracks that would fit right into Rush's HYF/Presto/Counterparts/RTB/T4E era. I think the song Friends in particular would be a strong track to look for similarities but the entire album seems right up Rush's alley. Mr.Bungle covering Zappa's Zoot Allures. Covering Zappa is no easy task, but I believe that Mike Patton and crew are very capable of paying tribute while bringing their own zany twist on one of my favorite Zappa albums. The album contains a great mix of vocal styles that would play right into Mr.Pattons repertoire. Not only this, but the musicians are definitely capable to pull off the masterful compositions of FZ. Gentle Giant covering Jethro Tull's Songs from the Wood Gentle Giant may be the only band capable of covering some of the prog pillars (Tull,Crimson,Yes..) but I think they would shine preforming SFTW. It has some great vocal harmony moments. Gary Green would shine playing Martin Barre's riffs. And the vocals seems like they would fit as well. Alan Parsons Project covering Gentle Giants Civilian. This one may be a stretch but once again I believe APP (particularly AP himself) would pay homage to this underrated GG album whilst making it uniquely their own. I could hear Zakatek belting out All Through the Night while Wolfson or Rainbow could handle the lighter vocals. I'd like to see some other responses and I'll update my list as well, I know there are three or four I am forgetting at the moment.

The very first 'tribute to rock classics' album I've bought was Nektar - 'A Spoonful Of Time'. Featuring a plethora of amazing Prog stalwarts, the album is rather hit and miss.
All things said, I'd rather hear Nektar playing a Neil Young track, but I prefer hearing Rush doing Spirit Of Radio. The album is a decent listen, but I don't know why a respectable band would spend time on 'old', popular songs....... |

How about Dream Theater covering Dark Side of the Moon? Or The Flaming Lips?

Now try to come up with some that haven't been done... Dream Theater does a lot of covers, most of which I enjoy, so I'll pass on them. But as for The Flaming Lips, well I could see them doing a decent cover MGMT's album Congratulations. Rather than what bands have covered Floyd, what album do you think Pink Floyd might have success covering? Perhaps a Camel one... pay some tribute to a band whose talent is equal, or perhaps even greater, than the "legendary" PF.

I can think of a few that have been done. I have all three of these: Camper Van Beethoven did Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk' album in 2003. Pretty good if you can imagine Fleetwood Mac done with a hard edge. Petra Haden covered 'The Who Sell Out' in 2005. Petra appeared on the Decemberist's 'The Crane Wife' and I love her voice and violin work, but this is an a cappela version so it is definitely a acquired taste. Pussy Galore's 'Exile on Main St' was appaling from a recording quality standpoint but the energy was infectuous. One I'd really love to see done is Green Carnation or maybe Opeth covering Comus 'First Utterance'. Lisa o Piu took a stab at part of the album but her band doesn't have the ability to put the sort of dark, moody layers on music like Opeth and Green Carnation did.

Is it Spock's Beard or one of those bands that also does Pink Floyd? I forget which has an album of PF music and it's very well done.
Dream Theater probably takes the cake in covering music, as their list is actually impressive, and you will need a pencil and 30 pages to get over that list when you read their book! ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Norah Jones covering Yes' "Yesterday and Today". OK, only a song, but I've thought of various female artists covering this for years.
Albums: King Crimson Mark II takes on Steve Hackett's "Voyage of the Acolyte", but with Gordon Haskell's vocals, not Greg Lake's. Fish-era Marillion covers Camel's "Moonmadness". |

Absolutely to the first one! I'm not a huge fan of Marillion or much of the neo genre but I agree that Moonmadness would be a very fitting album for them to cover. I've tried liking Marillion so many times, I've listened to Fugazi at least 5 times, and each time I put it on is not because I enjoyed the previous time rather I am trying to figure out what, if anything, I'm missing that everyone else is picking up on...
