Both of these albums are similarly rated on PA (around 4.28), and they are both heavy prog rock/metal albums with a strong concept running throughout for over an hour. Very similar in many ways, but released almost 15 years apart from each other (1999 and 2013). All I'm asking is which one is your favourite and why? Personally, I really can't decide - both constantly switch over, usually depending on which one I've heard most recently
As always, thanks for any feedback

The Mountain for me, definitely. Metropolis isn't bad by any stretch of the mind, of course, but The Mountain just resonates with me more. The concept is much more relateable and endearing to me, and the music itself is easier to follow, IMO.

Definitely Dream Theater. It's not even close actually.

It's like a poll between Genesis and The Watch. DT for me.

As much as I hate to vote for Dream Theater, Haken interests me even less than them

Either of Haken's first two albums would win this for me, but not The Mountain.

I don't see that much comparision to be honest. Haken are very ambitious but are struggling to bring out an original idea. That said they are still more interesting than DT ever were.

I don't really see Dream Theater and Haken being that similar, aside from the prog metal tag. Actually, PA even lists Haken as heavy prog. Sure Haken was probably influenced by Dream Theater somewhat, but they are their own band, not a DT copy.

Oh, almost forgot. I think I'll vote Dream Theater. This is a tough choice, and The Mountain is very, very good, but Scenes from a Memory has already stood the test of time for me.

Both are great, but Haken's album appeals most to me.

I'm not a fan of both bands but I must say that I prefer DT. I can still enjoy some Haken but little dose only

I don't think The Mountain is a concept album. If it's a concept album, what's the concept?

^Not as concrete a narrative as the one in Metropolis, but it nonetheless has a unifying concept. It centers around the abstract journey "up the mountain" we all experience. It depicts the struggles of climbing, falling, picking oneself back up, and pressing onward with each piece evoking a different mood and capturing a different point of this journey.

So basically it's a theme and not a concept. I think a concept album needs to have a story and or a musical motif that reappears through the album.

I see what you mean. It does, however, have both of those things. Even if it may not be an operatic album featuring characters and settings like Metropolis, a story can still be detected in the tracking of the narrator's climb, fall, catharsis, etc. with each new track. Also, there is motivic recollection. Off the top of my head, the main theme from the first track does reappear, and that's not counting any thematic variation that goes on. It's a pretty deep album.

Although Metropolis Prt II is not exactly my favourite DT album I still prefer it way above Haken's Mountain.

Well there is a story. It doesn't fall into the rock opera category that Metropolis, being that the connections are a little more vague, but the ideas here are stronger than just a recurring theme, hence why it is a concept.

The Mountain is a fantastic album, my #2 of 2013.....but no competition to Scenes. Scenes is a full concept album it has a storyline, begining, middle, end..defined, great story and brilliant musicianship. I don't see the references to DT and Haken either, but no problem, that's just me. Portnoy era DT will always win over Haken....but post Portnoy DT looses easily to Haken, hands down.

I have been enjoying Haken a lot with their 3 albums, and even though I like theam all better than almost any album from Dream Theater (except perhaps for Train of Thought... or the firs CD on 6 Degrees), I still feel I like Dream Theater better. Still, among this two albums as a whole, I like "The Mountain" better.

Looks like I've confused concept album with rock opera.
A concept album doesn't need to be a rock opera, but a rock opera in
recorded form must be a concept album. Thank you for making me
understand that The Mountain is a concept album.
