Ignoring the later (or earlier) works of these people, let's just consider what they did in the 1950s.

The ones I know I really love, like Sinatra, Davis, Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk and Ella Fitzgerald but I would vote for Billie Holiday if she was here. Anyway among these it's gotta be Miles Davis if only for Kind Of Blue.

Buddy Holly - I like his sound and his melodies.

hon.mention to Ray Charles but I don't know enough of his songs yet.  "The Night Time is the Right Time" is a stunner though.

The 1950's were before my time (except for the last few months). In the absence of Dave Brubeck it's not to hard to vote for Miles Davis. Kind of Blue is pretty good.

^this.......but I would put Monk before Davis because I like keys better than horns.

Miles.  If I were sent back in time and confined to the '50's I'd be listening to more Miles than anything else.

Davis
Monk
Ella

But I can't forget about the man in my avatar. Olivier Messiaen, whose 1950's work Quatuor pour la fin du temps is one of my favorite pieces.

I've always wondered how Elvis would be received here.

Voting Monk.

I'm the first one to vote for the real King Of Rock 'n Roll: Chuck Berry? Might've voted for Jerry Lee Lewis if he was here too.

Buddy Holly

Totally ahead of his time as far as a rock artist is concerned...I possess all his recordings..he was a genius.

His output was phenomenal...and he was dead at 22 years of age.

Listen to both Not Fade Away and Every Day....perfect depictions of "less is more".

Elvis.
Lennon said that Elvis died when he went in the army - some truth in that. However, in the mid-fifties he was magnificent.
