Does anyone here know of a decent book that describes the history of prog music?

Nope... There are a few out there but the reviews I've read have always been very mixed. I think a truly comprehensive and satisfactory history of prog has yet to be written.

However, if you're interested mostly in English prog then...

that may tickle your fancy.

Well, Edward Macan's "Rocking The Classics; English Progressive Rock And The Counterculture" is very good, I think!

I agree, good theories on some prog classics, although some of the musical theory stuff is a bit heavy for me.

I once read an A-Z of progressive rock music, but I cannot remember the name. I think the author was American, but I'm not sure. Something that stood out was that the writer was prepared to ignore cliched criticisms, ie he was positive about Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes. Does anyone out there know which book I'm talking about?

The Billboard one?? Or Jerry Lucky's various outputs.

Actually (and despite the publishers) Q/Mojo's Prog Rock special published recently for 6 quid ain't bad.
