Hi, just wondering to see how big everyone else's prog collection is and if this website really influences their buying of prog albums. Also, just out of interest, I wanted to see how many albums you own in the current top 100 rated albums.

I personally own 30 out of the 100 and this website has definitely had some level of influence on my prog album choices. Before I knew about this website I probably owned about half of that

Looking forward to seeing how many you own!

Fun question!  I have 57 total.

I did get 19 of the top 20 (curse you Banco LOL) and have every Symphonic Prog and Psych/Spacerock album!  My downfall genres are Progressive Metal where I go 0/6 (sorry Nick), Crossover Prog where I go 1/5 and Jazz Rock/Fusion where I go 2/7 with a couple Mahavishnu albums and 0 Miles Davis/Al DiMeola.

We must have very similar albums as I'm also missing Rush, Opeth, DT, POS & some Zappa.

23 of the top 50
24 of the top 100

Wow, I only own 1 of the 51-100 group (ELP's debut). It seems to me that I own many of the 'prog essentials' and from there it's just personal preference, or  random albums. If I buy an album from a band I've never heard before and generally like it, I tend to purchase the rest of their discography before I pursue other new bands.

41. I'm so lame. The only ones I've gotten within the last 20 years are by Big Big Train, Porcupine Tree and Mars Volta. Most I got over 30 years ago. I guess I'm slowing down a little.

Thick as a Brick
Dark Side of the Moon
Fragile
Crime of the Century
Lateralus

Definitely need more. I'd probably start with Opeth and Edge of Sanity. Then King Crimson, more Tull, Gentle Giant, Townsend, Focus, Rush, Floyd, Genesis... in addition to the dozens of other non top-100s I want. All I can say is I hope I get some iTunes cards or music store giftcards for my birthday or christmas. Or I might actually have to spend my own money. Tongue

Hey Hemispheres, if you find yourself in a classic prog mood, go after Pawn Hearts first.  It's in my top 3 all time prog albums and I believe it's VDGG's finest work.  "The Least We Can Do" and "H to He" are also great albums when you're in a classic prog frame of mind.  If you're looking for a harsher sound, go after "Godbluff", "Still Life", and "World Record"...

Have fun Evil Smile

I have 75 of the top 100.  Just filled out 5 of them last week with an Italian prog purchase.  Ordered 3 from PFM and 2 from Banco.  Received them a couple of days ago, but haven't listened to them yet.  Prior to that I finally got Godbluff a couple of months ago.  It was pretty good.  I've not really been able to get into VDGG.  I don't care for the cat strangling saxophone from H to He and Pawn Hearts.  Their first two albums were pretty good though.  I've not heard Still Life yet.

The sax tone on Still Life is slightly less obtrusive than the others. It's all-around a much more mature release. You might like it. It's the definitive "grower" album.

Any recommendations from the 51-100 range? I've heard of many of the bands in that range, such as Gentle Giant, Hatfield, Discipline, Pain of Salvation, and Mars Volte, among others. However ELP is the only album I have from there, and Camel is the only other one I've listened to. Suggestions?

PA top 100 can't be too wrong (accept possibly recent albums). Everyone has a say here.

I'm also going to throw my 2 cents in here and emphatically suggest Opeth's Ghost Reveries. It's in my top 5 and is a true desert island album for me. I can't brag on it enough!

Blackwater Park is good too. And so is The Inner Mounting Flame by Mahavishnu Orchestra. Second Life Syndrome by Riverside is one that seems to fluctuate between the upper and lower 50 quite often, so I don't know if you'd be including that or not, but if so, I highly recommend that one too. The others I'd recommend have already been suggested by others who beat me to the punch Wink

[/QUOTE]

I could recommend a lot of them.

Deloused for starters. It's probably the best and most unique prog metal album out there. Then Riverside and Pain of Salvation, as they are also really great prog metal bands with great albums, although Riverside tends to drift more Floydian and Pain of Salvation goes towards stuff like Fates Warning and such. Both albums are definite must haves though.

If you're into more traditional metal or just a fan of concept albums, Operation: Mindcrime is a must have. It's up there with The Wall if you ask me.

Misplaced Childhood is definitely the best neo-prog album and neoprog tends to be kind of divisive in the community so if you're into that kind of thing you should go for it, and if you've never heard any well this is probably the album to start. That or Clutching at Straws which somehow didn't make the cut.

Also Scheherazade is an amazing album, at least listen to the ending song on it because it's simply a beautiful piece of honest symphonic prog.

I own most of them, although I'm missing a few metal and neo ones. Gotta stress this though: the real fun starts when one goes exploring beyond the confines of it. I myself have an affinity for Krautrock, RPI, RIO and electronic - yet there is almost nothing of those varieties featured on the top 100 (No Tago Mago or Yeti?!?!?!).
I know why - people like to stick with what they know - and what others know, and I don't have any problems with being part of a minority that likes to listen to strange/weird/obtrusive music. My point remains that people should sample stuff outside of the top. I have at least 200 albums that I personally think could make a brilliant top list - and none of them are included in the currentTongue

Same here. I've got most of the top 20, being that they're essentially must-own albums, but after that, it's mainly personal preference. I'm also somewhat of a completionist, so I'll buy all of one band's albums before I check out a new band sometimes. LOL

I agree with you and most of my collection are not on that list of course. My friend Greg turned me on to  many obscure and strange bands over the years and that is really the bulk of what I own now though I do of course have all the usual suspects that we all know and love.
btw..I pulled out Tago Mago and Monster Movie the other day to revisit them.....and Yeti is my favorite Amon Duul 2.
Big smile

As per norm, Our favorite Dane is dead on correct! I also have little interest in metal (no Opeth except for damnation, no DT at all). I prefer electronic, space, RPI, neo, symphonic. I could also put together a top 200 without the 'usual suspects'.

Yeah, while I have 73 of the top 100 my personal top 100 is a very different list. Only 25 of my top 100 is on the site top 100. My top 20 only has 5 of the site top 100 in it.

Just 9. The highest-ranked album I have is Wish You Were Here, at No. 4. Also (going slightly off-topic) very pleasantly surprised to see SW's Raven ranked so highly on the all-time list (No. 27).

Come to think of it, where are Brain Salad Surgery and Tarkus, two albums which I thought were among the most highly regarded in prog?

4, 7, 9, 27, 39, 43, 45, 80 & 87.

Cool to see so many who feel the same way about this. There's so much incredible music to be found outside of the top lists - one just have to look for it and at times take a chance with something unfamiliar.

Roedent: ELP has always been a rather polarising act on here. If you go to the page of Brain Salad Surgery and take a look at the reviews, you'll see a lot of 5 and 1 stars. Just like Amon Düül ll or CAN come to think of it. These acts seem to sport equal measures of fans and folks who are repulsed by them - go figure. Anyway, that's why an act like ELP, who by many are seen as one of the pivotal names of the initial prog wave, isn't included on the top 100. Anyway, who cares? Music is not sports.

As long as Kind Of Blue is anywhere in the Top 100 list I can't take it seriously.
