Oh great! A Genesis poll, how good to see one of those once in a while. I bet this thread will spawn another healthy and good discussion! And while we're at it, we might as well create a Genesis vs. Yes poll! That would be totally refreshing! It really warms my heart when I see people discussing those bands, because it's really rare here, you know.

Anyway, my vote goes to Selling England by the Pound, but I'm not really a fan of the band.

I'm everything but a Genesis fan. The only album I can survive until the end is The Lamb. Honestly not just survive, I like it a lot. I've never understood why SEBTP is so loved, I find it quite boring and I'm used to skip a couple of songs.

I think from an engineering point of view, if we look at "studio
album" in that context, it's pretty interesting.
I went with Nursery Cryme because it really first put down the absolutely uniqueness of the band.  They seemed to mature in that way. They seemed to get a lot sonically richer around
the "Wind and Wuthering" and "And Then There Were Three" stage.  Dance on a Volcano
and Entangled from "A Trick of the Tail" are also engineering masterpieces.

Discussing Genesis in a prog forum, the nerve of some people, eh?

If you don't like Genesis, and don't want to discuss them or vote in polls about them, I suggest that you simply don't.

Oh, and posts like yours doesn't exactly help creating a healthy and good discussion.

My fav used to be SEBTP, lately it's Lamb Lies Down.  I enjoy pretty much anything by Genesis though (except Calling All Stations).

Hon. mention to ATTWT, because a few of those songs are among my favorites they ever did.

The Lamb.

Interesting that it has changed over the years...throughout the 70's and 80's my fave was Nursery Cryme.  In the 90's I loved SEBTP, but for the past 10 years or so I can't get enough of The Lamb.

'Selling England By The Pound', but voted for 'Foxtrot' since it's on the same level for me but unfortunately losing this poll.

As for 'And Then There Were Three', it's not a bad album anyway. Already a bit too poppy, but still holds a lot of classic-era Genesis melodism. Definitely the best LP from that infamous and notorious trio.

I didn't mean to say "And Then There Were Three" would be in my top 7 Genesis albums,
just that there is a richness to the texture of it that is pretty interesting to fathom.   A lot
of glissando.  Maybe they were trying to "clone Hackett and put it on steroids."   I wonder
if Voyage actually broke ground as a studio album as far as sonically unique ground
in terms of engineering.

ATOTT.  Love the sound of that album.   The Lamb is indecipherable to me.  Selling England, as all of the Gabriel albums are very good.  ATTW3 has a special place as its were I first heard Genesis.  The only album that I don't play is the first one.

It's not my no. 1 but almost.
Yes, it's much less prog, and short songs, but it's intense, great instrumental parts, even by Rutherford, soulful and poetic lyrics, excellent compositions (even when they are songs, not extended prog stuff) and a great variety of subject matter.

I like Trick definitely more than W&W.
I don't find any weak tracks on Trick, but on W&W there are some weaker tracks, I think (though stilll good), like Your Own Special Way, Wot Gorilla and All In A Mouse's Night.
This is purely subjective of course, but it's just to say that I do understand the people who vote for ATOTT.
W&W is my least favorite Genesis albums from the 1970's (though I still think it's quite good - Genesis didn't make any bad albums in the 1970's)
