All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Everybody could just save themselves some effort and pick up Yessongs.  None of the highly underrated Keys material, but still the best from the best.

I'm going to try to do this without looking at other people's answers on here first. Limiting it to just ten will be tough but here it goes.

Here's five leftovers that didn't make my list.

i think there is little injustice to machine messiah in many lists; No rating between the 10 from me (only chronological):

4. Yours is No Disgrace
5. Starship Trooper
6. Heart of the Sunrise
7. And You and I
8. Perpetual Change
9. Long Distance Runaround
10. Siberian Khatru

I've only listened to their "prime" years- "The Yes Album," "Close to the Edge," and "Fragile"- and some of the stuff from their earlier years with Peter Banks. Although "Changes" was the first song by Yes I have ever heard and is important to me for that reason, I can tell from what others have to say that I won't care for "90125" or any of the stuff with that other guitarist, Trevor... whatever is name is. I plan on listening to "Tales from Topographic Oceans", "Relayer," and maybe "Going for the One." After I get familiarized with more of Yes, who are still one of my absolute favorite bands (along with Pink Floyd and E.L.P.), I'll update my list and write a new one in this forum (if I remember to).

So sorry you're willing to sell yourself short by dissing Rabin. I predict you really will enjoy the Grammy-winning "Cinema" (you have time; it's only a little longer than 2 minutes), and "Endless Dream", which was posted as a favorite just above. I also think that you'll find other rewarding material if you explore further.

So tired of hearing the Rabin put-downs; they're endless in Prog Archives. All he did was revive the band so that a whole new generation of fans could enjoy them. And anything that helps this band along toward possibly getting into the Rock & Roll HOF is a good thing. Which that did. Because don't many of you want others to know what a great band (and possibly by extension, progressive rock) is? That's a huge boost toward the recognition they've deserved for a looooong time. Or are you like American Conservatives who are only interested in an ideological purity of a "Golden Age" of the band in the '70's?

"Love" perhaps in the sense that it went to #1 and therefore generously funded other offerings; e.g., good for the band and therefore good for Prog.

This may brand me as someone without a worthy opinion. But I like some of the least popular Yes albums out there--Tormato & Union.  I picked them both up as discount priced experiments so I had nothing to lose. Tormato was the first Yes album I ever heard and it fascinated me. Union was the first post-pop era Yes I had heard. Listening to both I admit, it's not their best work. But I believe they suffer by being compared to themselves. Without that bias I think they're both great, (despite what Wakeman thinks :)  ) and better than 95% of the stuff out there. And I feel likewise about the material I've heard that was released after Union. (Though I've never heard Talk, which is routinely brutalized as a piece of crap.)

I don't mean to sound bitter myself, but I couldn't help but notice that you didn't say anything in your argument about the actual music. You just said how it made them more popular. I think you need to be reminded of what the true spirit of prog really is.

5.Turn Of The Century

10.Siberian Khatru

Can't say a bad thing about any of those tracks. And yes nothing from Fragile made my top ten list. Its not that I don't like it (there are some awesome epics to be found), but I've always seen it as the weakest link during their classic period.

Talk is okay, IMO "I am Waiting" is the best Rabin-era Yes track (although what that actually means depends on your opinion of Rabin) and "Endless Dream" is excellent as well.

Well, Awaken is definitely number one (the best piece of music I've ever heard).  Two would be Gates of Delirium (the Yesshows live version).  Possibly Heart of The Sunrise at three just ahead of And You and I.

After that it gets messy.

I'm not a huge Yes fan I must say, I love all that prog of the 70's giants but Yes isn't on my top 10 artists list. I wanted to add Tales but I actually can't remember a single note from that album. I used to enjoy it a bit that's all I know.

I've picked a few tracks from the earliest albums as they deserve more attention. Love the chunky organ sound and Peter Banks was a more straightforward guitarist. OK it was the CTTE line up that was absolute classic the best ever but those early albums are lovely.
Its hard for me to pick much post Drama as very little actually stands out to my ears. I went for Cinema as Yes didn't do 'instrumentals' and that is a absolute beauty. I like Magnification and Keystudio and even Talk. All very listenable but not amazing releases.

10. Owner of a Lonely Heart (90125)
9. I'm Running (Big Generator)
8. To Be Over (Relayer)
7. I've Seen All Good People / Your Move (The Yes Album)
6. Madrigal (Tormato)
5. Gates of Delirium (Relayer)
4. Starship Troopers (The Yes Album)
3. Roundabout (Fragile)
2. Heart of the Sunrise (Fragile)
1. Close to the Edge (Close to the Edge)

I included more 80's yes than most people might because I'm a huge fan of Prog, as well as the cheesiest 80's pop, so with the change that 90125 brought was well recieved by me. I also believe that Madrigal deserves much much much more attention than it gets. It is probably the closest thing to a perfected song and the lyrics are beautiful! My other picks aren't that controversial.

Gates of Delirium
Holy Lamb

I suppose "holy lamb" is a bit of a wild card. With that in mind you could replace it with one of these(honorable mentions):

And you and I
Homeworld: the ladder
Hearts
The Revealing Science of God
On the Silent wings of Freedom

Weird how so many people don't pick anything after 1980. Is that an age thing or a prog thing? There is definitely stuff after Drama I consider prog but maybe most of you think most of that is weak(or relatively weak)?

I haven't made my Top 10 YES selections yet, but I'm pretty sure all 10 choices are going to be from the 1970's. I'm not sure whether it's a prog thing or an age thing with me, but I'm 60 years old if that's any help. Smile

Well, I can't imagine many people over say 55 choosing owner of a lonely heart or even endless dream to be in their top ten. I definitely feel age has something to do with taste and choices. There's always exceptions of course. I know not all older(as in into them in the 70's)fans hate owner of a lonely heart and the later stuff in general but a lot sure do(and I would even say most).

^^ I like "Owner of a Lonely Heart" too, but I wouldn't choose it as one of my Top 10 YES songs.
