Subject: Best song intro

This is a very open-ended thread basically about everyone's opinion on the best intro to a song.  Some of my favorites include:

Gentle Giant-Prologue (right after the drum roll..awesome)

Yes-Close to the Edge (Steve Howe's work is amazing)

Genesis-Watcher of the Skies (Tony Banks, all there is to say)

I agree.....the intro of "Watcher..." is amazing, IMO better than the rest of the song itself.

Just to randomly name a few that immediately spring to mind:

Firth of Fifth is great, and Heart of the Sunrise as mentioned.  Also, the into to Breathe and Time from Dark Side ; Xanadu (Rush) ; .3 (Porcupine Tree) ; The Good Don't Last (Spock's Beard) ; Fooling Yourself (Styx) ; Fools Overture (Supertramp) ; To Be Over and Revealing Science (Yes) ; Hogweed (Genesis) ; Locomotive Breath, Cross-Eyed Mary (Jethro Tull) ; Gypsy, July Morning (Uriah Heep) ; Overture, synth intro's of Baba O'Reily, Won't Get Fooled Again (the Who) ; Over the Hills and Far Away, No Quarter (Led Zep)......and so, so many more

I don't beleive that these are all the best, but merely a few notable one's that i've recently heard.

  1. Anglagard...Jordrock: Mysterious and dark even when simple with Piano and Mellotron, slowly goes in crescendo until the first explosion.
  2. Genesis....Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, the a capella intro by Peter Gabriel is simply perfect and very emotional.
  3. Manfred Mann's Earth Band...Blinded by the Light: Great keyboard and vocals at the intro.
  4. Styx....Fooling Yourself: Not 100% Prog, but that intro has a really nice keyboard and acustic guitar.
  5. Yes....Machine Messiah: Every musician is perfect, even Geoff Downes who never was one of my favorite keyboardists.
  6. Uriah Heep....July Morning: Starts soft and grows in strenght as preparing for a fast hard track but suddenly changes into a ballad.
  7. Par Lindh Project...The Cathedral: Almost as listening Bach's music, nothing prepares for the rest of the song, brilliant.
  8. Strawbs....The Hangman and the Papist: Dramatic intro for adramatic track, Wakeman at his best
  9. Renaissance...Song of Sheherezade: Epic, monumental, perfect for thesong, one of the longests and best structured intros.
  10. Genesis.....White Mountain: One of the finest moments of Genesis.

I love that intro!  Its one to play very loud, sat right between your two speakers. The build up makes those hairs stand on end. Well thats the effect it has on us folk, I guess..

I've played it to others before, in the hope that they would hear it as I do, but not a chance. It all ends in tears........of side splitting laughter

Other fantastic intros...

The fountain of Salmacis - Genesis
Dance on a Volcano - Genesis
Firth of Fifth (from SEBTP) - Genesis
Xanadu - Rush
Can you Understand - Rennaisance
Sleepwalkers - VDGG

So many good ones already mentioned, and hundreds more.

Just to mention a more obscure band, I enjoy the intro to the opening track 'Refúgio' on the APOCALYPSE album of the same name. Check out the MP3 in the Archives.

Yes's intro for "Perpetual Change" is something that once heard, never forgotten. But Wishbone Ash's acoustic intro for "Time Was" is IMHO the best of all.

Yes! And rightfully so. Especially the extended intro with that extra two minutes on the 2003 remaster. With all those ocean-y sounds, quiet keyboards and echo-y notes, it add a whole new dimesion to it, at least IMHO.

Watcher of The Skies - Genesis = most atmospheric

Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas = most riffy

Gentle Giant - Way Of Life = funniest and funkiest

Acres Wild - Jethro Tull = most sublime

Awaken - Yes = perfect!

The Spirit of Radio - Rush = dynamic and energetic

One More Red Nightmare - King Crimson = darkness groove

L'Via L'Viaquez - The Mars Volta = for the groove and the anticpation

17 - Yourcodenameis: Milo = Most instant

Killed By An Angel - Sunny Day Real Estate = so big and so coloured

Cuts Marked In The March Of Men - Coheed & Cambria = so direct and hard-hitting, yet still melodic

Birds Of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra = most haunting and beautiful

and last but not least...

Pampered Menial - Pavlov's Dog = get's my vote for the most consistent album for quality intro's - at some points perhaps so much so the songs don't always live up to them....hehehehe!
