I love Yes, but I really think their remastered CDs have some poor Bonus Tracks. "Early rough mixes" (on Fragile), "Studio run-throughs" (on CTTE) and "Tracking Sessions" (on Drama) ??

Not to compare (causes it's totally apples to oranges), but Geddy Lee always said Rush wouldn't release Bonus Tracks or Album Outakes because it waters down the quality of their catalog... and I kind of think that's what Yes has done. Don't get me wrong - I love the remastered CDs and the packaging - but their Bonus Tracks are messing up my image of Yes' utter perfection in the studio !

Anyone have any recomendations for classic prog with good re-masters and/or bonus tracks. OR any words of warning about gimmicks that I should not fall for ?

Yea, that's why I skip them  Prefer the real album itself.

Anyways, why would they put Bonus Tracks on such a classic like Close to the Edge and Fragile?

To make people buy them.

I agree, most of the bonus tracks suck.

Fragile does have 'America', which is a good addition to the album, and it has some excellent guitar from Howe.

Some of Uriah Heep's albums have good bonus tracks ('What's Within My Heart' from Look at Yourself' is one of my all-time favorite outtakes, and 'Why' is also good, there is a version on Look at Yourself, but the better one exists on Demons and Wizard - with some of the best bass soloing i've ever heard courtesy of Gary Thain).

Also, try 'Who's Next' from the Who.  The SACD version contains a disc and a half of bonus tracks and live performances most of which have never been released....all coming from the failed "Lifehouse" project that never materialized due to personal problems with Mr. Townshend.  (All of the newly remasterd Who discs have great bonus tracks, Tommy, My Generation, and Live at Leeds i think.)

it's not like you're really paying for the tracks. the cd costs about the same. and it sounds excellent. i have The Yes Album, Tales..., Relayer, and CTTE all the remastered versions and they sound perfect. sure the bunus tracks are most all just edits or rehersals of the other tracks on the album, but who cares?

The Marillion remasters have excellent bonus tracks. They have the typical studio run-through/alternate version songs, but they also have singles, unreleased tracks, and demos. Plus, they're all spectacular.

I disagree.

I think fans know what the original album was, and judge it as such.

Bonus tracks are just that - bonuses. I love some the rough instrumental verison of Going for the One, the alternate verion of And You and I, the run through of Gates of Delirium, Go Through This, Everyone's Song, a cappella version of Leave It, etc. I think a lot of the Tormato outtakes are better than some songs that made the album.

The Bonus tracks bugs me too. I love the packaging of the CD, but the bonus tracks should have been released with some rarities box-set or something like that, and not on the CD.

I love the Yes remasters. Granted, I do skip most of the bonus tracks (run-through are dumb), but I think the essays, extra photos and overall packaging is beautiful.

Oh, but alternate versions are pretty cool too, IMHO.

Im actually a big fan of the Yes Studio Run-Throughs. I like them because they show how each song starts out as and how it develops into the masterpiece studio version. Also, I think that some of the studio run-throughs are better then the studio tracks.

I love the new remasters, thought they sounded good and were VERY well packaged.

The bonus tracks ARE bonus tracks, they were not supposed to be released, also look at how fast they released albums in the 70's with the touring schedule they had! I can see why they had so little extra stuff around, if it had been any good, it would have already been released! I think the bonus bits are about what we could expect. Mariliion also did do singles, something Yes rarely did, what they did do it all on the new CDs. I do have to admit that I did not buy ALL of the remasters, the first four albums, I skipped. The first remasters of them were fine for me.

Just picked up Yes - Going for the One, remastered, w. bonus tracks today.Big smile

Haven't played it yet, but the packaging looks nice -- last heard the full album on vinyl, some 17+ yrs ago!Shocked

I'll get back to you re the bonus tracks when I review the disc in the fall.Smile

ErmmThe Bowie Rykodisc remasters have some fine bonus material, great sound, and cool packaging/photos. I guess I'm in the "bonus is good" camp -- don't program 'em in, if you don't like 'em, but you've lost nothing, and (at the very least) gained better sound and album art, lyrics, etc.Thumbs Up

Yeah, but you wouldnt know that going in. Most poeple would be excited by the fact that there is bonus tracks that they buy the album right there. Granted bad decisions but what are you gonna do??

The "Tormato" bonus tracks aren't half bad, I think...plus the ones on "going for the one"...

Bonus is good...

As far as I remember, my first encounter with outtakes/b-sides etc. were with Deep Purple things... Most of the B-sides, and even many outtakes from their '68-'73 period is simply mind-blowing. I never understood why they hadn't included (at least some of) them in their respective albums.

besides, I usually consider 35-40 minutes of running time for an album too short. With bonus tracks, this shortage is partly removed.

I did not listen to Yes' new remasters, and I hardly care about rough versions/ alternate takes of already existing songs, but I know some of the GftO outtakes (from Yesyears compilation), and they are superb! even "money"... It is evident that "money" and "amazing grace" wouldn't go with the album, maybe neither would "Montreux" and "Vevey" themes... After all, when listening to the CD, they all come after the regular tracklisting. It's up to you not to listen to the rest.

I don't know about Rush's outtakes, Geddy Lee might be right, the songs could really have sucked, but as for the other bands, like the already mentioned Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Yes, they have really shiny outtakes. Think about Genesis' outtakes released in the archive 1 box set... How many of you rated the album less than 4 star!? Besides, I would be happier if, for instance, Twilight Alehouse was released as a bonus in the album closest to its release date. I believe there's a connection between the songs written & first performed around the same date... Box Sets seem to me taking the individual tracks out of their original contexts and offering a patchy work...

Anyway, I'll go for the bonus tracks

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Yes, the bonus tracks bug me quite a bit, too.

When an album ends, I just want it to be over. I don't want to hear a studio run-through or a single version of this and that.

However, I do enjoy the studio version of Clap as a bonus track on the remastered "Yes Album". It was caught in its early stages and even had bits and pieces of "Mood for a Day" in there.

Skip them usually but I quite like 'Total Mass Retain' edit on CTTE, rest I can leave.  Of course, with having them on vinyl then CD then '1st remaster' CD then 'rhino remaster', I've more Yes albums now than I can shake a stick at.

Some of the bonus Yes tracks are good (e.g. America), some interesting (rehearsals of Gates of Delirium), some a waste of space (mono extract from Starship Trooper).

One thing that annoys me - the early re-issues are in really nice digipaks, why has Going For The One gone back to a plastic case?

I found the studio run-troughs very intresting to listen, but it would have been fairer to release these tracks as a separate CD or double CD. Actually as a vinyl box. With Roger Dean's artwork. And signatures. And...

The bonus tracks don't actually bother me that much. I have two of the Rhino remasters (CttE and GftO), and I'm really satisfied that I bought them, because CttE has a GREAT digipack and both albums' essays and pics are really cool.

And the Rhino remasters are the same price as any other remasters. Just under 10 euro each in my country.
