Taken from the newsletter.
Hello everyone!
I feel like it's been a while
since I've sent one of these. A lot has happened, but I want to keep
this message focused mainly on one thing - the new and forthcoming Kayo
Dot album!
Basically what's going on is that
we've been working on an epic double-album prog masterwork. I'm pasting
the press release below so you can read all the details and trade it
around, post it on your blogs (if you would be so kind!) and all that.
We think this is one of the best things we've ever done, honest. So,
we're incredibly excited about it. It'll be our first pro studio album
in a few years', too... the last two were more or less home recordings
due to budget constraints. So, the pre-order is really what's going to
make this possible for us or not - therefore, if this is something that
interests you, please place a pre-order now! We need to sell a bunch of
these before the beginning of April... crunch!!! Check out the press
release below.
And, since we're running a new
preorder for Kayo Dot, I also wanted to anticipate any questions about
the Ichneumonidae DVD and record that we funded last year. If you're not
on my facebook or missed the post, the music part is totally finished -
there are some samples from Ichneumonidae up at this soundcloud link:
https://soundcloud.com/tobydriver/sets/ichneumonidae-unmastered-clips .
And the film portion is still forthcoming. I hope the audio clips can
tide you over until we are able to make that happen.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Boston-born, and now New York City-based veteran avant-metallers KAYO
DOT, led by Toby Driver, are set to hit the studio for their 7th album, Hubardo,
this April. This album will mark the 10-year anniversary of KAYO DOT's
debut and landmark release, Choirs of The Eye, and the band will trek
out to Avast Studios in Seattle, Washington, with producer RANDALL DUNN
(SunnO))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Black Mountain) returning to the
helm.
Hubardo is an
approximately 90-minute conceptual epic double-album, with story and
lyrics written by longtime lyricist and former MAUDLIN OF THE WELL
vocalist, Jason Byron. Musically, the album covers the spectrum of all
of the band's works, from the sparse doomy elements of Choirs of The Eye, to the blast-beat, woodwind-driven Gamma Knife, the chorus-bass goth fusion of Coyote,
and even lush orchestrated prog moments harkening back to the days of
their previous band, MAUDLIN OF THE WELL, and, as with all the band's
releases, Driver and Co. venturing into new territory.
The album sees a returning cast of characters with Toby Driver on Bass,
Keys, Guitars and Vocals, Terran Olson on Keys and Woodwinds, Daniel
Means on Woodwinds and Synth, Mia Matsumiya on violin, Tim Byrnes on
Trumpet and Horn in F, the first proper studio recording with Keith
Abrams on drums, and the first recording contribution of longtime live
collaborator Ron Varod on Guitar. Hubardo will also feature a
very special guest vocal appearance by Jason Byron - his first recorded
appearance since MAUDLIN OF THE WELL's 2001 albums, Bath and Leaving Your Body Map.
This album will be self-released
on the band's own imprint, ICE LEVEL MUSIC, and pre-orders will be taken
to help fund the recording and travel costs. Pre-Orders will be offered
in 3xLP Deluxe, Standard, and Digital-only editions, featuring limited
200g colored vinyl in a triple gatefold (6 huge panels of artwork), a
5-chapter poem by Jason Byron entitled The Sword Of Satan, signed poster, T-shirt, guitar pick, and sticker. The Pre-Order system is now LIVE at http://kayodot.bigcartel.com" rel="nofollow - http://kayodot.bigcartel.com
Here is the track listing for the album:
1. The Black Stone (~7:00)
2. Crown-In-The-Muck (~9:00)
3. Thief (~5:30)
4. Vision Adjustment To Another Wavelength (~5:00)
5. Zodelida Caosaji (To Water The Earth) (~6:00)
6. The First Matter (Saturn In The Guise Of Sadness) (~9:30)
7. The Second Operation (Lunar Water) (~10:30)
8. Floodgate (~7:00)
9. And He Built Him A Boat (~7:00)
10. Passing The River (~8:00)
11. The Wait Of The World (~18:00)
The Pre-Order system is now LIVE at http://kayodot.bigcartel.com" rel="nofollow - http://kayodot.bigcartel.com and the records will be limited to 300 copies for the Deluxe Edition and 200 copies for the Standard Edition. Hubardo is slated for a fall 2013 release to coincide with Kayo Dot's tenth anniversary.
Thanks for reading, and for your continued support!

edit: also, just wanted to highlight one of the important bits:

Well, Toby said that if there are enough people interested in CD version, it will become available. It's mostly due to Gamma Knife not really selling well (less than 30 copies)
|
Posted By: HolyMoly
Date Posted: March 15 2013 at 17:46
I didn't even know Gamma Knife had a CD available. I bought the download (the only available format at the time of release), so buying a CD wasn't a priority, but I probably would have done it had I known.

I think the first part of HM post is most appropriate. I want to say the download was available long before a physical copy. (I admit I may be misremembering as it was awhile ago.)

I knew about it but mostly because I follow the label that released it on facebook. I didn't realise so few copies had sold though.
Anyways, I'll probably grab this at some point, digital or on CD if a CD becomes available. While I prefer CDs I will listen to the music however it's made available to me. Vinyl is way too pricey though for how much I've been listening to KD lately.
|
Posted By: sleeper

Gamma Knife was released on CD months after the digital release so I don't think it gained much interest so it'll probably go the same way again as long as people actualy ask for a CD release.

^ Exactly. That's the problem. You have to release things at the same time. Or at least soon after. Things fall off the radar in months. I also wouldn't spend money twice on the same product (without remastering/bonus tracks/etc) but idk about others.
Guess it's pleading to TD for me.

Here's the full update from KD that the link comes from.
It's with great pleasure that we present to you the first preview track,
"And He Built Him a Boat," from Kayo Dot's forthcoming double-album,
HUBARDO, due this fall.
http://kayodot.bandcamp.com/track/and-he-built-him-a-boat-2" rel="nofollow - http://kayodot.bandcamp.com/track/and-he-built-him-a-boat-2
"And
He Built Him A Boat" is the record's ninth track, so the lyrics have to
do with events about 5/8 of the way through the album's narrative.
Along with the band's core members, the song also features guest backing
vocals by Jessika Kenney (who has also sung for Wolves in the Throne
Room, Sunn0))), ASVA, and many others), and BC Campbell.
We hope you enjoy this song, and please spread the link around if you may! We're still running the preorder for the 3xLP at http://kayodot.bigcartel.com" rel="nofollow - http://kayodot.bigcartel.com -
we need to sell about 150 more copies of the vinyl in order to have
enough money to manufacture it, so please don't hesitate to snap this
up.
We also have a few shows coming up in NYC:
This
Saturday, July 13 at Spectrum as part of the NYX II: New York
Progressive and Experimental Rock Festival. Playing all new material! http://www.spectrumnyc.com/" rel="nofollow - http://www.spectrumnyc.com/
Friday, August 16 at St. Vitus Bar with MIRRORGATE, their first show in two years and possibly their last ever?

I just listened to the track again after a week or two. I think it's grown on me like all of Kayo Dot's material. It's a really stunning track.
It's a shame that not enough funds have been raised to press Hubardo yet. Very few album releases have made me more excited than this one. I don't think Toby is one to over-sell his material, and from his descriptions and the album teaser it seems like this will be at least as good as Choirs of the Eye, if not better. I'm especially because it's a 100 minute narrative, and the band lineup seems largely to be a re-vitalization of the "classic" Kayo Dot lineup. And so far musically, it sounds like nothing I've ever heard (including from KD). Hopefully we'll get this before the end of the year.
Here's a recent interview about it: http://www.lurkerspath.com/2013/07/29/kayo-dot-interview-on-hubardo-crowd-funded-projects/" rel="nofollow - http://www.lurkerspath.com/2013/07/29/kayo-dot-interview-on-hubardo-crowd-funded-projects/

I guess we'll at least see the download release this month some time - though I'm really looking forward to my eventual vinyl copy. I wonder when that will materialize.

I order the shirt and digital so I'm waiting for the shirt possibly more so than the album. I've been trying to get some new clothes and rocking Kayo Dot is obviously essential.
The artwork is nice, but I'm unsure how it'll look just on a tee or if Toby plans to have the shirt have alternative artwork on it.

Is it just me or is the audio quality on the two tracks, especially the most recent one, not as good as say, Part the Second?

No, I believe the first song they released was stated as unmastered, don't know about Thief though.
The sound quality is already much better than on Gamma Knife and at this point it would be hard to compare with Part the Second, but they probably had more money to record PtS as, if I remember correctly, someone donated several thousand dollars towards it's production.

PtS has an overcompressed quality to it that some people like because it sounds more like what they would get in mainstream pop and rock music. I don't think Toby wants that kind of sound with the compositions Kayo Dot has been doing

I dont understand what you mean that PTS is over compressed. It doesnt seem compressed compared to alot of music.
On the dynamic range database its got a pretty good rating, you won't find that many albums above 12: http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/index.php?search_artist=maudlin+of+the+well&search_album=

You can have great dynamics and still be massively over compressed.
I see what Triceratopsoil means, though I wouldn't say "over" compressed. Kayo Dot will always have a much more raw sound, it fits them better.

Ok so then i'm pretty sure PTS is not really that compressed in either way, audio data compression or dynamic range compression.

Of course it's data compressed, it would have been dozens of gigabytes in size otherwise.

...I actually think Triceratopsoil meant audio, not data compression. PTS was offered in Lossless FLAC. And as far as audio compression goes, yes, it is much more dynamic than most records. So I'm not sure what he meant.

Never felt that in regards to both the digital and the vinyl sound.

Tour dates! Emphasis added on the Atlanta date because I am so there. That venue is a converted barn, modified for maximum hipster appeal. I saw Ariel Pink there last year. It's gonna be soooo cool.
---------------------------------- We are planning on touring this music as much as possible, beginning
with a leg down the Southeast US (and yes, including Florida!) for a
couple weeks from November 8-23.
Here are the dates, with more in Florida to be confirmed soon:
Sept 6, Brooklyn NY @ The Bell House with Sal Mineo (Eugene Robinson of Oxbow and Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu)
Sept 14, New York NY @ Bowery Electric with Ahleuchatistas and Psalm Zero
Nov 8, Baltimore MD @ The Wind-up Space
Nov 9, Asheville NC - TBC
Nov 10, Nashville TN @ The End (subject to change)
Nov 11, Little Rock, AR - TBC
Nov 12, Hattiesburg, MS @ The Tavern
Nov 13, New Orleans, LA @ Big Top
Nov 14, 15 - Florida TBC
Nov 16, Miami, FL @ Churchill's
Nov 17 - Florida TBC
Nov 18 - Atlanta, GA @ Goat Farm Arts
Nov 19 - West Columbia, SC @ Conundrum
Nov 20 - Greenville NC - TBC
Nov 21 - Richmond, VA @ Gallery 5
Nov 22 - Brooklyn, NY at 285 Kent with Vaura and Psalm Zero
Nov 23 - Philadelphia, PA @ The Khyber Upstairs with Vaura and Cleric
