Most Controversial Prog Albums list. This list would calculate the albums with the most varied ratings. These albums' ratings charts may look like this:   Please give opinions on this idea. I would love some newbies and some collaborators/administrators to give feedback. Wouldn't controversial mean albums that are kinda mid range i.e. they polarize opinion between loathing and adoration in equal measure - surely an album with a low rating on PA after significant number of reviews can no longer be deemed 'controversial'? -------------

I would rather we took standard deviation into account when collating the Top 100 Most Popular chart than worry about the albums that divide opinion (and no, that does not mean they are "controversial"). ------------- What? |

Yes that would mean that they have a rather average rating. This does not mean that it is an average album, it means that it has sparked very varied opinions. ------------- I am currently digging: Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. Could be interesting, especially because a lot of albums that fall into such a category are faves of mine. You're probably going to find a lot of Krautrock, avant and electronic, as many(including the highest rated) of these don't necessarily speak to the 'rock' crowd, and people who do not fancy this kind of music still write reviews of em.
Tago Mago, Zeit, Trout Mask Replica, Faust, Yeti, Western Culture and the likes are all albums that most fans of (really) out there music dig, yet there are heaps upon heaps of folks who despise this brand with a vengeance. The opposite is of course just as true. We have quite a few avant heads around who never ever will try out the neo label. All of this then can be boiled down to whether these two groups of fans actually rate/review what they don't like. What initially sprang to mind in regards to this thread were of course albums such as Yes' Tales and Tull's Passion Play, yet I must say that these two albums don't really feel that 'controversial' anymore. They have so many fans around here, and I rather think it was a thing of the past. By past I mean back when Sean Trane's reviews were like miniature bibles(I am not taking a swipe at Hugues here, I am simply stating the obvious, which was that he, for a few years anyway, seemed like something of an expert and go-to guy in all matters prog( plus he didn't exactly adore either of those aforementioned albums)). ------------- “The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. This is a good idea. LibraryThing does a similar statistic on controversial books. ------------- ---------- i'm shopping for a new oil-cured sinus bag that's a happy bag of lettuce this car smells like cartilage nothing beats a good video about fractions |
