Subject: Recommend some Prog Metal (I don't know)

First of all, I have to say I already know lots of prog metal/post metal/tech metal listed on PA, but I'm looking for some I'm not familiar with. Without listing all the bands I know/like, I will say of the three subs I enjoy 'Progressive Metal' the least and 'Tech/Extreme Prog Metal' the most. So, if anyone suggests something I already know I will mention that.
I'm looking for something that sounds similar to this:
...but sounds nothing like this:

Listened to Vaura yet?

You've most likely heard of these guys before, if not:
Some of the weirder Prog Metal out there - not really Tech, more laced with Avant and Industrial elements. Kind of remind me on Nine Inch Nails in a way. Not too big of a fan, but still a great band. They did a killer Schizoid cover though. Also:
Okay, we all know these guys, but I still had to post them. THOSE RIFFS.

how in the world are Necrophagist progressive music in the slightest? I would argue they are the antithesis of progressive music. As soon as you turn on any song you know exactly where it's going - nowhere.

- I liked that Kobong track; need to check their albums out.
- That Ketha song sounded a little too much like Meshuggah (whom I can take in small doses but am not a huge fan of).
- The Neuma track was interesting. Sounds like a modified sax (or trumpet?) in there.
- The Thordendal track was alright, not really what I'm looking for though.
- I'm vaguely familiar with Praxis. They are not listed on PA but another Praxis from Mexico is in Eclectic Prog. I do need to check them out more as I am a fan of a lot of the musicians who collaborate on that project.
- Vaura I have heard a lot about recently. Without looking which sub they were in I could tell they were 'Experimental/Post Metal'; they have a noticeable indie/alternative influence (which a lot of post rock in general does) in their music. Not quite as 'heavy' as I was expecting, I need to listen to more for their stuff for it to 'sink in'.

Well, I know they're not in the database here, but man, there are tons of bands of the top of my head that should rightfully be here, but aren't deemed "Progressive" by popular conventions and perspective, or are at least not Genesis and Yes rip-offs. Necrophagist, well in my opinion at least, are very unconventional in the context of their musicianship. I mean, their approach and composition is rather the same and unvaried for a so called "Progressive group", but dude, those guys can PLAY. That's got to at least count for some sort of unique attribute when compared to music outside of a Progressive or Experimental domain, you know? Maybe they're not Prog Meta per se, but anybody that's a fan of the style and musicianship, would love these guys.

so if a band has technical playing you consider them progressive? i just don't see how Necrophagist are progressive in any sense. They play extremely cliche and predictable technical death metal. I guess it might seem unconventional compared to music that's not technical or related to death metal but in the death metal spectrum Necrophagist are very safe and typical

How are you with black/doom/post metal?
Those in bold I highly recommend Akphaezya Aghora maybe, they're related to Cynic I'd be surprised if you haven't tried them already but Between the Buried and Me are a must. Burst, particularly the last album Lazarus Bird Canvas Solaris Circle Takes the Square Diabolical Masquerade Drawn Edge of Sanity Ellipsis Ephel Dueth Giant Squid Gojira Gordian Knot Grayceon hAND Ihsahn Intronaut Leprous Lux Occulta Madder Mortem No Made Sense The Pax Cecilia Peccatum Protest the Hero Ram-Zet Rolo Tomassi Sculptured Sikth Thence To-Mera Tusk Virus Yakuza

ooh on that note i just remembered this
I definitely consider this progressive (check all three parts since it got split up on youtube), very cool atmospheric black metal which experiments outside of the black metal realm yet still stays true to the sound and feel of the genre as opposed to some other bands who tend to take the black metal aesthetics of lo-fi distorted guitars, shrieked vocals, and pummeling drumming and just play whatever music they want and call it "progressive black metal"
also this
One of my favorites when it comes to prog metal. Stunning Italian black/doom metal

No of course not, but wouldn't you say the technicality of musicianship though, is rather unique compared to most modern metal, and specifically death metal bands? I mean, it's of course in the same vulgar style as a lot of the bands within the field, but they're belting out riffs and solos I'd hear in BTBAM's music, or Cynic's for that matter - quite a bit more intricate, and creative. Yes, within their own genre, they're a pretty typical sounding band, but a representative band for sure though. Hey, I just thought I'd post them just to give a glimpse for someone who hasn't, but anybody that's into the more technical side of metal, would of course know them. Dude, I respect your opinion and perspective, and I see where you're coming from, and I actually mostly agree with you, but I think they have a lot of experimental qualities for metal that would deem them qualified for some sort of Progressive status.

Gojira, Meshuggah, Opeth and Blotted Science are examples of Progressive (Death) Metal bands. Necrophagist is NOT. especially when you compare them to the bands I mentioned.

Sort of Mathcore pioneers - big influence on Dillinger for sure. Man, I wish these guys were still around. Great, great band.
Another great band that's sadly disbanded.

I still have to disagree. I used to be incredibly into extreme metal and death metal and tech death in specific and I just find Necrophagist as run-of-the-mill as it gets.
Even in that small niche of flashy weedly-weedly tech death there's a lot more progressive stuff around
and there's also the case of things like Atheist, who were playing technical and rather progressive death metal a good decade before anything like Necrophagist was around

- I've heard of Shining but never got around to checking their music out yet. Not bad, need to do more research.
- I've only heard of Necrophagist and how some modern bands supposedly sound like them. Sound like typical technical death metal.
-Edge of Sanity Giant Squid Ihsahn Leprous Protest the Hero
Familiar with these ones. I think I've tried a few songs by Between The Buried And Me but don't remember much about them. I'll look into the others.
- The Brulvahnatu track was pretty intense. Not sure what to think of it but I'll check out the other parts.
- Necromass was pretty good, nothing I haven't really heard before.
- Skyharbor didn't really do it for me, not my cup of tea.
- Darkwater is more vanilla symphonic prog metal which I'm not a big fan of.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

Fox On The Rocks wrote:

No I don't dig Protest at all, I also don't consider them death metal in the slightest. during my tech death heyday my main bands were Necrophagist, Psycroptic, The Faceless, Gorod, things like that. I got out of it rather quickly though, that was before i really delved into true death metal and black metal and once I was hooked on the old school bands most of the flashy tech stuff lost its' appeal to me. Nowadays when I think of tech death I like it's either on the old school side like Atheist or on the total other extreme such as Gorguts' Obscura. The more mainstream tech stuff lost its' appeal to me, too much focus on technicality and playing something really impressive and showy rather than writing a good song.
also worth noting that something that helped me bridge between modern tech death and traditional death metal was death metal from around the mid-90's area, I see it as the between period where it still have the power and essence of true death metal but was branching out into more technical areas. Cryptopsy's None So Vile is my favorite death metal record ever and I hold it as one of the best, perfect blend of death metal spirit, a new sense of technical playing and experimentation, including some elements of jazz and funk in the guitar and bass, respectively

- That Botch song just sounded like modern alternative metal.
- I've heard of Harvey Milk (the band) but never explored their music. I liked that, gotta look into them.
- Gorod wasn't bad but not what I'm looking for. Same goes for Psycroptic.
- The Safety Fire I liked. Need to listen to more songs.
- The Arusha Accord song didn't do much for me.
(K I'm not using bold anymore, it's starting to p*ss me off)
I know Atheist (and Cynic) very well.

true progressive metal, Portal take elements of black and death metal and twist them into something completely alien and unknown. Literally the imagination of Lovecraft unleashed upon you through sound, an atmosphere of utter chaos

First of all Zravkapt let me say I really enjoyed the first video you posted, it was really progressive and not just extreme stuff. Let me suggest to you a truly interesting band. Pan.Thy.Monium, very progressive stuff, a lot of twists and turns, jazzy solos but still extreme stuff, I hope you don't get turned off by harsh vocals because the music is really rewarding. Two very long songs, hope you'll enjoy.

haha well considering you said Cynic is the heaviest you get I wouldn't expect you to enjoy it at all. There's a certain precision and control to the chaos that you don't notice from the first listen though, it's really quite good. Like the filthiest Morbid Angel riffs mixed with really dark atmospheric black metal and just twisted into something beyond imagination. They put on a hell of a live show too.

I'm going to echo the recommendation of Between the Buried and Me. Because they're so adventurous, you might not care for one album but love the next. The one that really does it for me is The Great Misdirect, which is the first album I've heard in decades that reminded me of listening to Dark Side of the Moon from beginning to end. I'm not comparing the musical styles of BtBaM and Floyd; I'm saying that listening to that album has a similar effect. I just get immersed. Lost. Soaked in.
And I'd be willing to bet you've already checked out Amorphis, but if not, try their Skyforger album for starters. They also vary their style from album to album, and this isn't the most proggy metal out there, but it's interesting enough that you might dig it.

- Portal sounded like extreme metal sh*t, I didn't hear anything 'proggy' about it.

Thanks a lot! Both Karaboudjan and Pan.Thy.Monium are projects of Dan Swano. I have heard of PTM but never heard their music until now. The second track I liked the most; the vocals in the first one were a bit much but I could tolerate them.
- Is that an entire Arcturus album? I will have to listen to that later.
- I've never heard Amorphis before and they're not the kind of prog metal I'm into. Poppy symph metal, not my thing but I know a girl who would love them!

Edit: Just saw that Karaboudjan album is less than 20 minutes?! What the hell??

For just a sec I thought you wanted recommendations like Symphony X and I was almost out of this thread before I had read what this was all about
Ok, some obscurities for you. Chryst, real weird avant fun epicness
or a bit more serious and doomy Woburn House
or something more into Mr Bungle directions maybe? Pryapisme
or something noisy core? Cleric
I can also recommend Neuma which was suggested earlier on

This is really great stuff; certainly progressive and experimental.

- Chryst was interesting; have to listen to a full song or album.
- Woburn House sounds like some post metal I have heard. Not bad but not really what I'm into.
- Pryapisme was awesome! I need to check them out.
- Not sure what to make of Cleric yet, have to listen to them some more. That track got more interesting as it went along.
- Tesseract I have heard of, but haven't listened to their music yet. They sound similar to some alternative metal stuff I have heard.
Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions!

Also, 'Mantiis' from Obsidian Kingdom. A fine record from 2012, very eclectic, be it more 'traditional' then previous things I suggested. Worth a try anyway. http://obsidiankingdom.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - http://obsidiankingdom.bandcamp.com/
