Edit: By "I know them" I of course mean "I know them not just by name, but I've listened extensively to their music".

I created this poll because I was puzzled by the posts of another thread. Many people apparently don't know Pain of Salvation, but they know Dream Theater.

My suggestion for those of you who don't know Pain of Salvation: Go to their website, click "Band" and then "Samples". You'll see that the first 4 tracks of their masterpiece The Perfect Element Pt. 1 are freely available for download ... and a shortened version of the last track, plus three tracks from their previous albums.

http://www.painofsalvation.com - http://www.painofsalvation.com

IMO Pain of Salvation are much better than Dream Theater ... I'm saying this although I am a fanatic Dream Theater fan.

I know Pain of Salvation, Mike, but I can't vote, because you've forgotten to put the "I know them - they're very good, better than Dream Theater, but Opeth owns them both" - option.

Yes, I forgot that option. It seems to be a case of Murphy's Law: There's always one option that you don't think about when you create a poll.

I'm fine with that, but I'm interested in your opinion on the samples:

http://www.painofsalvation.com/samples/morning.mp3 - http://www.painofsalvation.com/samples/morning.mp3

Maybe you can just listen to this particular sample and tell me what you think about it, from your perspective as someone who doesn't like metal.

Peace & take care

I've heard them, but their music didn't make me feel happy (or unhappy), just indifferent.

How about an 'I know em, and I'd about put them on a par with DT' button, Mike?

I've gone for DT on this thread...but only just.  If PoS had a longer back catalogue containing RL parts 2 & 3, then it may be slightly different.

I had one album (Perfect Element) and thought it was OK, but not worth investigating further ... so where does that put me? I can't really say I know them since I know a tiny fraction of the group/Gildenlow's work ...

Perfect Element is difficult to start with ... if you're into metal, I'd recommend Concrete Lake, if not, you should try Remedy Lane. Both are VERY different from Perfect Element.

Remedy Lane is a more likely destination ...  ... but by God, there are a few 100 bands ahead in the list, now that I've already tried PoS ...

So, it's apparent that royalty is still without a sense of sarcasm. Y'know, being the King of Loss and all. Excuse my childish silliness, but I'll never let go of my sense of wonder.

I apologize - King of Loss - if I seemed too pretentious. Just give me your blessing and I can go on.

Way better than DT.
More emotional, more tasteful, more diverse, better singer, better songs. That's why they're better in my book.
