Top four for me are Guapo, Arthur Brown, Guru Guru and Magma.

I picked Guru Guru-i love the groovy, infectious rhythms in Hinten, one of my favorites of the band. A close second would be Kraftwerk 2.

That was my pick as well with Guapo's Five Suns the runnerup. Man that Guapo album reminds me so much of Anekdoten at times with that heavy sound and lots of mellotron. Hinten is probably my favourite Guru Guru album despite the disturbing cover.

Swoooosh! There you go again you mad Canadian! Too much maple syrup my good man?
I am really at a loss here - between Kobaia, Journey, Five Suns, Kraftwerk l and ll, Haikara and Hinten I count at least 4 masterpieces, and disregarding the numbers, a thing like Hinten is able to charm its way right down my trousers! Might have something to do with that fine ass decorating the front cover: Uhhhmm yummy...
I love the krautrock of the first two real Kraftwerk albums(Their first album was called Tone Float but released under a different moniker), I slightly prefer l, but it's close! The opening Ruckzuck is just so wonderfully snarling, aggressive and ultra bizarre in a highly groovy manner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWKfo3LDI1Q" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWKfo3LDI1Q Kobaia speaks for itself - and it remains one of the most accomplished debut albums outside of NEU!'s imo. I think it's a wonderful release of French fusion, and already here I sense the opening teutonic trades of the zeuhl genre. A thing that I personally feel was a combi9nation of many an artists, who all had their heads full of Coltrane and then managed to cook up something entirely unique. I'll put it this way,I also think of Wakhevitch as zeuhl. He's only rooted in electronic...
I love Arthur Brown's Journey. Man do I ever! The somewhat kitschy drum machine is a stroke of genius. A lot of people don't get it, but I do. It is the key to this album, because it lets all of the other ingredients flow freely and much more effervescently. Bubbly indeed!
Guapo is a modern recording that mixes RIO, Crimson, dying trees and Henry's cow. Gotta love that album! Incredibly easy to get into as well - especially for newcomers to the more "out-there" music.
Haikara is a personal fave. Feels like Finnish Krautrock to me, albeit with a slight fusion tinge to it. Yet again that never stopped the Germans - just look at Exmagma and Embryo. In fact, I hear a lot of Embryo in here - now that I think of it.
Alright I'm gonna stop now before I hurt myself

Oh and if it wasn't clear, then I'm definitely waiting a bit with my vote
I love these records so much and couldn't bear seeing any of them without votes. So I may have to pull off a rescue mission a little later on and send my love to one of the forgotten ones.

Once again this is hard. I'll have to go with Journey, simply because there isn't anything quite like it. Rated it with 5 stars BTW.

I gave it 5 stars as well. Love the live version of Time Captives that Hawkwind does with Brown singing on it. Spaced Out In London is the recording that it's on.

Oh, Kraan's `Andy Nogger' gets my vote, a rough around the edges groovy little charming beast!
But damn Guru Guru's `Hinten' is one of the first prog related albums I ever bought, and it knocked me out! Shame about that cover, though - YOU try recommending that album to someone to listen to and see the look on their face when they see that front cover!
"No, Sir, I don't like it!"
I haven't listened to Kingdom Come's `Journey' in years now, so I'm off to dig my copy out for a spin! Thanks for the idea, John!

The Guru Guru album is great other than the album cover. I've also heard Kobaia. I've heard both good and bad things about Guapo, but I've not yet had the chance to check them out. Maybe one of these days.

I'm glad someone voted for Guapo as it's my runnerup here. Man that is one intense album. I guess Nebelnst would be a good comparison for anyone who hasn't heard Five Suns.

I really like the colourful but inconsistent `Let It Out' from Kraan too, even though it kind of hits a slump somewhere in the middle with some inane psychy noodling that seems really out of place on the album!
I passed up the oppurtunity to buy a CD of their 1989 album `Dancing In The Shade' for $15 at a record fair on the weekend, though I've seen it there unloved for about two years now. I think I might grab it next time!

Well Guapo can get pretty experimental although on Five Suns there's not a lot of that. I've only heard this one and Black Oni, the latter of which i had a hard time getting into.
Here's a funny story although you had to be there i guess. But at Thanksgiving my Brother in law and his wife were over and he was drinking quite a bit but i wasn't paying a lot of attention because i was having a good time too. Anyway we had the stereo on and he comes over and says "Play Kobaia" as he's weaving forwards and backwards. Anyway i'm thinking to myself "He's wasted !" and tried to explain that the others at the party would not appreciate Magma like we do. I talked to him the next day and he doesn't remember asking me that or even leaving the house. He had to get up at 5am the next morning for work and i did feel sorry for his self inflicted wounds.

Love that story John!! Oh boy....
I experience that same sort of feeling each and every time I go and visit one of my old high school buddies. Problem is that he doesn't need to be drunk to say something like that. I seriously doubt if he has any idea of what 'real' people listen to hahah! Take last Easter for instance. We throw this huge get together with all kinds of people, beautiful girls and the works - most of them into modern electronica and perhaps the odd Beatles track. All through dinner this guy continues to put on Bubu's Anabelas!! I sat next to two rather delicious women who had severe problems holding a simple conversation due to the maniacal reeds storming through the room like a drunk mariachi on rollerskates. When they finally asked him to change the music, because they couldn't think, he went ahead and popped on Tago Mago..... Gotta love that hahah!!! Got me dancing at least.
Anyway, I don't think he knows how crazy some of the music we listen to sounds like to other people. The only time he did, is when the both of us decided to hold a New Years eve party, and we decided to put Trout Mask Replica on repeat for the entire duration of the cooking process. We had a rack of lamb in the oven for some 3.5 hours. He didn't know the good captain, but boy did he ever get acquainted with him! That, he found crazy, and he even mentioned something about changing the music before our guests arrived.... I changed it after the fourth guest. Gotta have some fun right?

Wow i had to look that one(Dancing in the Shade) up because i didn't recognise it. Let it Out is excellent. I related in my review how popular Kraan were in Germany at this time. In the "Sounds" magazine the Live Kraan and Let It Out both released in 1975 were voted number one and two respectively and they were voted best live act over Genesis, The Who, Jethro Tull and Santana. And they were voted favourite band over Can, Passport, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk.

Trout Mask Replica is a lot easier to get into, when you first start to hear patterns reemerging from the tracks - even if they're divided by several cuts. Although knowing your tastes John, maybe this one just isn't for you? I am however willing to perform a brainwash on you for the sake of experimentation

Yes there are several versions of that song on that tour with Brown on vocals. There's a different mellower version where the keys somewhat takes the back seat and the guitar takes the lead. Excellent version, it works really well. Look it up on the tube.
