I only know the Magma, Nebelnest, Grobschnitt, and My Solid Ground (nice to see that in the list) albums, and of those I am voting for Felicite Thosz. I've played it many times since getting it, and I still really like it. |

Hmmm, John....I've got the IEM `Arcadia's Son' album on vinyl, but not played it in years, so long overdue for an opinion!
Hawkwind's `Levitation' is nice, consise and punchy, unusually focused for that band! I listen to it quite often! The Magma album is coming along nicely too. Very high quality and joyous. But I have a lot of love for that first Grobschnitt album, I've got a review of it ready to go! I bought it a few months ago, wasn't too impressed, but our buddy Tom Ozric insisted I stick with it, and it's paid off. To heck with it, Grobschnitt gets my vote! |

Hmm... I'm going to give a vote to Zepto for two reasons, 1) I do love it. It's pretty much right up my alley when it co,mes to modern avant-prog. 2) I don't think others will vote for it.  I like Magma as well as IEM from this list. | Levitation is one of my favorite Hawkwind albums and Nebelnest's Zepto is also really good. But I feel like going with an old favorite of mine Nine Days Wonder, I don't think they are going to get any votes by this list. I really like their debut it has a cool wacky vibe to it, a real excellent gem! |

Felicite Thosz sounds too much like Magma: The Musical to my ears. I find their recent joyous hymnal gospel sound hard to swallow as well, and this time there's simply too much prettyness. Tom Ozric knows his stuff and he's recommended so many great albums to me over the years. By the way Michael i really enjoyed your MYRIAD reviews. Not too many people have those records so it' was good to read your opinion. I picked GROBSCHNITT as well although NEOM was right there too. I really want to get Hawkwind's Levitation, I've heard it's fantastic. I think I've heard some stuff by NeBeLnEsT, but I can't recall what it's like - pretty RIO-y, I think.

I can't argue with you with your thoughts on the latest MAGMA. What i loved about the previous one Em-Re was the darkness and how serious it was. This is like the polar opposite and it took me a while to take the plunge after hearing how joyous this new one was. Like E-Re, I loved FT on first listen, but not as much, and still not as much. I love the exuberance; such joy of FT but, I can say the same for much of E-Re. To me they are not opposites by any means. With both albums, I knew the majority of the material already, so I knew what to expect. I'ma real sucker for the exuberant "Hhai" tradition of Magma, as well as loving other stuff. Magma is to me more about joy and fun than darkness and seriosuness. My favourite albums are still the first two, plus Wurdah Itah, but I really like the modern ones too (not KA as much). Judging by that Haikara track, though, I certainlyy would have voted for that over Felicite Thosz had I known it. |

Maybe "opposite" was too strong a word but i stand by my statement that E-Re is darker and also more powerful and intense than the new one and the one the preceeded it(KA). KA has never completely clicked with me and this new one might also be in that category although i do like it better than KA. I agree with you on that. It's just that I love the joy that can be found on E-Re (the reworking of Hhai is one of the albums highs for me. "Oh that knee; gotta love that knee.. Ow whee, that knee, ow whee!" That's how I hear part of it). I would say that there's more contrast on E-Re. By the way, except for a time when I took a break from Magma and stuff in the archives generally, E-Re has been in regular rotation. It is easily my favourite of Magma's modern studio albums. I used to love KA, but got bored with it. I find it "thin", Prog cliché in part, and forced, and the keyboards I find dull. |

^Hhai is stunning and there's lots of uplifting joy to be found on my favorite (two first) Magma albums. As you know I listen to plenty of joyful, silly and fun stuff, but Felicite Thosz sounds at times like something composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. And that's really not my kind of enjoyment. I had seen it performed live so I was prepared for the new album to be slight disappointment. But although it was my least favorite part of the concert it worked much, much better on stage. Glad you liked the Haikara epic. I find the whole piece really unique and for some reason I'm genuinely moved by the vocal delivery.. Edit: A couple of post got there inbetween, so my arrow was aimed at the post where Logan mentions Haikara. I love the light and dark of ER too, while I can't really listen to K.A in full, btw.

I saw Felicite Thosz pieces performed live via video before E-Re came out, and had thought at that time that that material would be on Magma's next studio album. I loved it from the Alien-ish opener on. It does have a Webber vibe to it, but hell, I admit that I used to enjoy musicals quite a bit, really like Jesus Christ Superstar, and could sing all of Phantom of the Opera at one time (saw that performed twice -- in Osaka and Vancouver and bought the CD back in about 1990  ).Magma's first two albums are also my particular favourites, and indeed the joy, fun, and silliness is part of the mix that makes the albums so special to me It was hearing "Iss lansei Doia' that first got me into Magma. Joy and fun is common to a huge amount of Magma. By the way, talking to you about what makes magma special has incited me to play Gonda Sextet again. That was a fantastic recommendation for me. That Haikara is really good; glad you posted the youtube vid. |

Nah, it's all good. I kept telling myself to get the new Magma, but the (relatively) high price of the disc combined with the relatively small amount of music within keeps me buying other bands' albums instead. Pretty unfortunate, as I'm sure that I'd end up loving it, but then again I've been listening to Zeuhl quite a lot less lately than I used to. I listen to Ruins the most from the genre these days, and sometimes that's not even very often. Well i know i go through my phases where i'll listen to RPI for a couple of months then over to Jazz/Fusion then Krautrock etc. I'm not sure how many others listen by genres but i do although i might combine 2 or 3 genres at a time just to mix it up a bit. ------------- "The wind is slowly tearing her apart" "Sad Rain" ANEKDOTEN |
