I just saw the new Tim Burton : Charlie and the Chocolat factory. I was completely disappointed by 'Planet of the apes' and appreciated only mildly 'Big Fish. 'CATCF' is great,  a film which is entertaining (the psychedelic Veruca Salt Song is fantastic) and brings up questions about creativity and the role of the artist in the society!

great role for Johnny Depp!

Yes, it would be a great role for Johnny Depp, especially as his role as JM Barrie is still fresh in people's minds, from 'Finding Neverland' and Jack Sparrow from 'Pirates'...all of which are there to entertain and delight kids.

My only query is, wasn't Willy Wonka meant to be an older man in the book, who was looking for someone to pass his factory onto when he retired? (I may have got that wrong, I've not read it since I was about 8!)

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Yeah,...Artistic liberty! One of Johnny Depp's hair strands has been highlighted in grey so!

There are things about the new one that I liked, and it is a lot better than I expected. But overall, I think that it is impossible to remake that movie perfectly.

BTW: Tim Burton said in an interview that he didn't even like the original film.

I hate it when people say this, but I must say for the sake of argument that it's not a remake but a redoing of the book. Anyway, I liked Depp's Wonka better and the visuals slightly better, but all other aspects of the other version were better. I think, though, if this one came out first I would like it better. The only reason I didn't enjoy this one as much is because I'd already seen the story, the characters, and a lot of the gags. This is whyt remakes (or redoings of books) shouuldn't be done. And I must say that the oompa loompas and their songs in this film were basically the most annoying things I've ever seen, and this is coming from a Tim Burton & Johnny Depp fanatic.

Maybe having an old man luring five children to him with sweets isn't as acceptable as it was back in Dahl's day?

Maybe not Willy Wonka, but he'd look good as the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
