None of these drummers listed are my favorites. For me, I just couldn't vote for one so it's a toss-up between Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, Chester Thompson, Alan White, and Ian Mosley. By the way, I hope the inclusion of Lars Ulrich on your list is just a joke. If not, then I pity your tastes in drummers.

I agree completely - he's extremely underrated, largely because Camel played as a band, not as a group of individual maestros. I'm still not sure I'd pick him above Peart or Bruford, but he's up there with them.

If the option 'other' wasn't there, I would go with Gavin Harrison, he has a nice style and he worked with Crimson, Porcupine Tree, two bands that I enjoy a lot.
Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy are really good drummers, don't get me wrong, but overrated a little bit.
The best drummer to my taste is Buddy Rich.

I'm still a little shocked that the Peart bandwagon is still being towed around. Hasn't anyone been listening to Rush for the past 30+ years?? He still has some prog chops but he isn't playing anything technical or interesting and hasn't done so since "Hemispheres." If this poll happened in 1978 or 1980 I'm sure he would have done quite well...but there are so many better drummers out there today that I'm still wondering why the Peart question keeps coming up!!!! I started playing drums almost 20 years ago and have been playing professionally for 10 of those years. The first song I ever learned was Tom Sawyer...should a beginner drummer at the age of 15 be able to rip through this song so easily? Not to mention this is probably the most complicated thing he has played since!!!!!!!
To not ever see drummers like Alan White or Nick D.Virgilio in these polls is a shame...it's always the same names over and over again. Why not be even more obvious and mention Bonham and Moon as well? This is only my opinion of course, but being prog fans I would expect a little more variety in the drummer / guitar player / bassist / singer polls. Neil Peart went from being one of the best drummers of the 1970's to being utterly plain and boring ever since...
..this is my opinion only, so feel free to rant and rave about what I said, but I won't really be here to fight it out because I really don't care. Enjoy!!!!!!

Harrison from the list, but as has been said many times here - there are a wealth of drummers in Prog that are better than most of these ... Ulrich is the least imaginative and most mundane drummer it's been my displeasure to endure a drum solo of - it was so tedious and dull I walked out in utter disappointment.

I suspect that the topic starter only listed his favourites, since Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, Phil Collins would seem obvious choices. I note that it's modern prog drummer dominated. We've had so many drummer polls over the years, and I doubt many of them omitted Bruford, Palmer, and Collins, so at least this is rather different from others. Kind of surprised to see Lars Ulrich on the list, and that he got two votes. I don't actually know his work that well, but have read quite a few dismissive comments on him at PA.
Other than Tony Williams, Pierre Moerlen, Chris Cutler, Giulio Capiozzo, Jaki Liebezeit, Christian Vander and Billy Hart are some other favourites of mine, but I wouldn't expect them to make the list.
Bj-1 wrote:
BILLY COBHAM End of thread. |
He''s a great drummer too of corse, though I prefer Tony Williams based on what I know. I read an interesting thread once that talks about Cobham, and Cobham's views on Williams at allaboutjazz. Found it: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=36253" rel="nofollow - http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=36253 And a related article: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=30993" rel="nofollow - http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=30993
Interesting that Cobham accused Williams of playing too loud, as I have thought of Cobham as a loud drummer, but of course both were versatile, and Cobham has played differently for different projects. I'm not that familiar with Cobham's work outside Mahavishnu Orchestra or his early solo material -- used to like Spectrum a lot. But then the fusion work is the most applicable to this poll, and one can expect more loudness in jazz-rock/ electric jazz framework.

Queen were an extremely good "rhythmic" band. Taylor and Deacon could both really lock into the groove and Freddie Mercury, when he played piano, was astoundingly precise. Listen to the piano parts in songs like Somebody to Love or Killer Queen. They sound almost like a player piano in how dead on the beat they are.

Yes, Roger Taylor (the Queen's one) is very good as drummer.
I also really like him as a composer and singer, although I know that this viewpoint is not often shared.
The songs he wrote and sang in the 70's are among my favorite ones (Tenement Fuster, Drowse, I'm in love with my car, Sheer Heart attack ...).
There is always a great positive and somewhat "electric energy" in it.
A kind of "Rage of life" (don't know if this is very english ...)

Ringo and Mason!
On a serious note, there are many favorite drummers, but if I had to choose one it would be Bill Bruford.

Neil Peart! Probably my favourite drummer ever!

Since for some weird reason you included Lars Ulrich here, wouldn't it made more sense to include at least Lombardo instead of him? I don't mean I like Slayer more than Metallica ok? I'm saying that Lombardo is a faaar better drummer! (among MANY others) Neil Peart is getting my vote btw...
