If I could vote, I'd go with Batman (1966). That movie was hilarious! A classic! He sprays the shark biting him with some Shark Repellant (or whatever that is) and the fake shark drops back into the water and explodes!! The rest, pretty boring. Drenched with bad acting and boring dialogue that never ends. But the action is so classic. If you haven't seen it, the whole thing's on youtube.

The costumes and musical score were pretty good, especially taking into consideration it was made in 1966.

I easily voted for the first Keaton film. Much more entertaining than the recent trilogy, filled with great action and style. Never afraid to acknowledge that it's based on a comic book either. Keaton nailed the voice too, unlike Christian Bale - although there was a big improvement from him in the current `Rises' film!

I'm not much of a fan of `The Dark Knight' film. I always found it deadly serious and quite dull for long stretches. It's made a lot better by the two villain performances from Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhardt, I think people have raised it higher due to associating it with the awful situation surrounding Ledger.

The newie `Rises' was a huge improvement to me! A bit more crowd pleasing, much more fun and some added much needed humour. Far more pure entertainment!

I don't know, maybe, but if he hadn't died the films would still be outstanding and people would still love them.

Atavachron, I guess I always found it hugely disappointing that Batman and The Joker don't even get a proper physical showdown in `The Dark Knight'! I didn't want to see the big finale with a bunch of no-name extras on a boat, at least give us a proper end confrontation!

I like that film too - it never took itself seriously and was loads of fun. Batman is all through it and the villains are great. The problem for e was that Julie Newmar was replaced as Catwoman and she was always my fave inthe series - so sultry and cute

Catwoman and Batman

Always loved the 60's film too! I wish Warner Brothers and Fox would get their deals worked out so we can get the proper full 60's series released on DVD! Surely they both know they'd make bags and bags of money?!

Actually, that 60's series is the closest to getting the Batman costume correct! Up until the recent relaunch, Batman in the comics always had the blue and grey costume!

Julie by far! Halle was just a weird choice. Julie didn't seem TOO well-known. Which you can't say for Anne Hathaway and Halle Berry. Which was good, and makes her the classic Catwoman. She's got that 'look'. Especially since she was on the Batman show. Nobody's gonna look at Halle Berry and go "Oh, she was the Catwoman!"

Duh, sorry, Julie wasn't in the movie. They did get a pretty good look-alike. Though her hair was completely different. That was Lee Meriwether, my bad.

Yep, any of the 60's girls are the winner here!

Anne Hathaway really stepped up and was a lot of fun in the new movie, very surprising. She provided some nice flirty comedy relief, and kicked a** well too!

As for the Halle Berry Catwoman, it's truly awful, but I'm maybe just bitter becasue Ashley Judd was originally contracted to play that role and pulled out of it, so if she HAD been in that film, no matter if it was still just as awful, she would have shot straight to the top of this list for me!

Julie Newmar IS catwoman!

and this is her today!

I agree and its about time the 60s series was on DVD as everything else is - perhaps straight to Blu ray would be the answer. I have the 60s series taped off cable TV but its not the same really is it as owning a box of em!

60s series has 120 episodes -

^^^ Yeah its a lot for sure and hard to get em all but over about 2 years they played em here every Saturday and i got the lot. They are a bit average at times but pretty good overall. Best eps are in season 1. worst in season 3.

Atavachron! I mean a PROPER fight, not the Joker sitting on him punching him for about ten seconds! The dogs don't count! I would have preferred to see a true scrap, nothing like a total crazy to provide a real dirty and unpredictable slug-fest. Even Loony Bin Jim, in the `Punisher War Zone' film, although being puny, really beat the hell out of the hero, proving that all movie pyschopaths really can give a good beatdown!

I know the Joker would not have been much of a physical threat, but even the Nicholson Joker got more of a real fight!

actually in the comix the Joker is generally considered to be big and quite tough, so yes a real brawl would be appropriate

Yes! In the comics he's got a real nasty sadistic streak that fuels his unpredictable crazy strength lol! He always gets a few mean shots in! In the recent relaunch, he's been particularly vile.

Agreeing with you on everything, but I haven't seen the latest and steered away from Batman and Robin (as it got slaughtered in the press and was directed by Joel Schumacher). And as far as I can remember I prefer Batman Returns. Surreal fun! Penguin rules!

Although Heath Ledger slurped and smacked his lips too much, everything but the villains in Begins and Dark Knight was dull. Christian Bale looks and sounds less alive than a badly animated computer game character or something.

Saperlipopette! I think `Batman and Robin' is worth watching in a `so bad it's good' frame of mind lol! I think it's a huge guilty pleasure! The whole script is virtually one bad pun or one liner after another, and it's really an example in awful Hollywood excess! You can see there is so much money behind it, and it's full of massive sets all lit with these vile neon day-glo colours! Arnie's awful delivery of his `ice'-puns are all total clunkers, worth watching for that alone!

I do get the feeling that most of the rest of the cast hammed it up and acted totally appropriately, given the tacky and over-the-top tone of the film.

Agree with both of you above, the Penguin was terrific in that second film! Really vile and sleazy, loved him eating the fish! Terrific make-up and costume work on him too!

Yep! Plenty of classics like `Ice to see you', `Everybody - chill!' and `Today's forecast - a Freeze is coming!'! Pure cinematic gold

I always got a laugh from Batman telling Robin about how evil the plant-girl villain Poison Ivy is, but adds "Nice stems, though...."!

Painful but tragically funny!

Batman
The Dark Knight
Batman Returns
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman Begins
Batman Forever
Batman (1966)
Batman & Robin

I enjoy the '66 movie once in a while for it's corny and fun approach. The Batman & Robin movie is just a horrible movie, the only one that I'll get drunk to so I can make fun of it more.

Obviously, the anti-shark bat-spray should be enough to make the first Batman movie one of the best of all time of all movies of all ages. But if I am to disregard such mastery, this would be my list:

Excellent movies:

The Dark Knight
Batman Begins

Great movies:

The Dark Knight Rises

Good movies:

Batman Returns
Batman (89)

Mediocre movies:

Batman Forever

Bad yet amazing movies:

Batman (Adam West et. al., 1966)

Bad, bad, atrocious, without redeeming feature movies:

Batman and Robin.

C'mon, a movie with Terminator-Mr. Freeze ("A freeeeze is coming!"), a dumb Bane, some seriously bad one-liners, and lots of views of Batman, Robin, and Bat-girl's butts doesn't give you a clue that director Joel Schumacher was paying tribute to the campy Batman of the '60s? Wink

I will say, that George Clooney was the worst Batman. He was just acting George Clooney as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. At least Val Kilmer acted like Batman, even when he was Bruce Wayne Ermm

I'm torn between Batman (1966) and The Dark Knight for completely different reasons.  The Dark Knight is simply a brilliant film, which forced me into a theater for more viewings than any other film but No Country (tie), while the 66' movie is a campy classic.  Batman 1966 has one of my favorite movie opening scenes ever:
What can you say about that, really?

Who am I kidding, gotta vote for the real film.  Dark Knight it is.

Strangely, I enjoy Tim Burton's versions of Batman more than Nolan's. Even though I don't like most of the rest of Burton's work, and I enjoy the rest of Nolan's filmography a lot.

I'll go with Batman Returns. As others stated before me, Danny DeVito is great. And the scene with the penguins leading the penguin's body into the water...marvelous.

The two Burton films were more artsy, whereas the recent trilogy were more in line with the comics; Batman actually portrayed as a detective like he's supposed to be, and more action packed. Both styles did justice, as both types of styles are used in the comics as well.

^ True though I'd say none of the films or other versions have had the guts to do the real Batman, a guy with few of the ridiculous contraptions, vehicles or larger-than-life imagery--  maybe someone will do a 'Gotham By Gaslamp' or similar steampunk version.

For me, no other Batman film has managed to capture not only the character of Batman but also of his arch-nemesis The Joker better than The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger's performance is forever engrained into my mind. He totally nails the role. Jack Nicholson did great job as well, but Ledger was The Joker for the 21st Century. I can almost imagine his performance will be talked about for many, many years to come.

Mark Hamill turned into quite a notable voice actor. I'm sure he still gets residuals from the original Star Wars trilogy. I can't think of one film outside of Star Wars come to think about it. I know he's been in many, but I don't recall any of them being memorable. But, yes, he voiced The Joker well.

My favourite is The Dark Knight, of course. Amazing special effects, captivating storyline and Heath Ledger's acting - iconic. After that, probably something like this:
2. Batman Begins
3. Batman (80's)
4. The Dark Knight Rises
5. Batman Returns

Having seen The Dark Knight Rises, here's my list:

1. Mask of the Phantasm 9/10
2. Batman Begins 8/10
3. Batman 8/10
4. Batman Returns 7/10
5. The Dark Knight 7/10
6. The Dark Knight Rises 6/10

Not even gonna mention the rest. On another note, no Batman movie can beat the comics or the 1990's animated series.

In a way, yes, he fits the role of the earlier comics and cartoon Joker but the best Joker is the sick psychopathic pseud-terrorist Joker of the modern age and that role is nailed by Heath Ledger.

The Animated Series is all of my nostalgia though, still love it to pieces. One of the best cartoons ever, IMO.
