Yes, I'm new to posting, so forgive me if this topic has been done before, or worse, done to death, but I'm curious to see what others come up with for a Fantasy Band line-up so to speak. Rules are simple: You can pick anyone alive or dead, located anywhere in the world but they all must have been alive and musically initiated during some same point in time. So for instance, you couldn't put Jimi Hendrix and Steve Wilson in the line-up together. Let me start off with mine: Vocals - Greg Lake or John Wetton, a la In The Court of the Crimson King and Red, respectively Guitar - Steve Howe, Fragile style, particularly South Side of the Sky and Five Per Cent For Nothing Guitar - Robert Fripp, stylistically Red, Starless and Bible Black, and Lark's Tongue in Aspic Bass - Roger Waters, Meddle-era tone and style - Echoes! Drums - Bill Bruford, Yes and King Crimson, not projects like Earthworks and his stuff with Patrick Moraz Keys / Synth / Organ / Mellotron, etc. - Kerry Minnear, Acquiring the Taste, Black Cat and The Moon is Down in particular Organ / Synth - Patrick Moraz, solely because of Relayer I know mine isn't that varied, common names and classic eras, but that's my game right now. I might submit another one when my mood changes. |

Yes, this has been done many times, but I pick totally different strange combos every time, so it doesn't matter to me especially. Sounds awesome .As for me ... eh ... : Florian Fricke - piano Flavio Premoli - piano, keyboards Ian McDonald - flute, sax Steve Howe - acoustic guitar John Weinzierl - electric guitar Nick Mason - drums (so as not to step on other people's toes) John Wetton - bass no vocals I may have to think about this again as it is hard to imagine Weinzierl being able to fit into this team.

Ha! Nice, can't go wrong there, right? Also, somebody brought up Toby Driver, and now I'm pretty sure I'd be willing to part with Steve Howe to see Driver and Fripp collaborate - but I don't think you can really separate Toby and Mia, so in goes the violin! On a side not, Kayo Dot stayed at my first apartment way back and you'd be surprised at how completely unweird those two are. In fact, Mia tried too hard to appear weird when she wasn't at all. |

Yeah, I was living in a band house (we were all fledgling musicians) and our time was spent booking shows, pressing albums, playing in bands, touring and going to shows. We knew what life on the road was like, so we made our apartment open to any and all acts passing through. There's a list somewhere, but we had something like 40 bands stay with us over that year. Holy parties... Anyway, Kayo Dot played a small local venue(short trip from Boston to Burlington, VT), and they asked to stay. They were mostly just normal, tired people who appreciated a hot shower and a place to cook food. There were some other bands people might find interesting too: Rosetta, Constants, Circle Takes the Square, Across Tundras, Tunturia. I'll post links if I can find any. |

Portnoy would get kicked out first, as soon as he suggested that he could do growls on a couple of tracks. Next would be Victor Wooten, for showing off too much. I have a hard time seeing Fripp and Wetton together without hearing Red (kinda the reason I put them together in mine ). I wonder how well Fripp and Peart would get along... If it worked, I'm sure the sounds would be killer! |

For me, my perfect line-up is the one of Yes on Fragile and Close to the edge, just the best of the best on each instrument.
However, Grace for Drowing last year got me thinking about a plausible great line-up that could be formed this days, perhaps it could even be the new King Crimson: Robert Fripp on guitars. Steven Wilson on vocals and guitars. Jordan Rudess on Keyboards. Theo Travis on sax and flute. Tony Levin on bass. Gavin Harrison on drums. Dream on... |

Some times I have also thought about which could be the ideal PA line-up, and even though I wouldn't agree with every member, I think this might be it:
Vocals: Peter Gabriel. Guitars: Robert Fripp (though Steve Hackett might just as well be chosen, or even Steve Howe). Keyboards: Keith Emerson (though Tony Banks might just as well be chosen, or a bit less likely, even Rick Wakeman). Flute: Ian Anderson (sharing some vocal duties). Bass: Crhis Squire, sharing some vocal duties. Drums: Bill Bruford. |

Well, for me yes, the "Classic" Yes line-up was great on all it's aspects, the musicianship of every member, plus the writing capabilites, music, melody... just everything is perfect on those two albums. Best line-up, best musicianship, best writing, best songs, best albums, best everything. |

One actual supergroup that formed briefly for a one off beneift concert in the 90's was very promising. That included
Keith Emerson (keyboards)
Joe Walsh (guitar)
Simon Phillips (drums)
Jeff Baxter (guitar)
John Entwistle (bass)
Rick Livingstone (vocals)
Modestly called themselves 'The Best'. The DVD of the concert is great. Pity they didn't continue and put out an album of original songs. Would perhaps have liked a different vocalist (Chris Thompson ideally) then it would have been perfect.

Well, there's Liquid Tension Experiment... you might like that one. Almost all Dream Theater, but without a singer, and Tony Levin on Bass instead of Myung. Oh, I was just thinking, what if Dream Theater had gotten someone like Dio instead of LaBrie when they were looking for a vocalist... that might just as well have been an ideal line-up too. |

I don't know. If I had my way, it would be heavy prog bordering on metal with avant-garde tinges and incorporating sections of post-rock and Iona-style synthy interludes. Lots of dissonance, great riffs, emotional and intense, lots of tension, somewhat depressing with a few glimmers of hope to point forward. That's just what I've been writing lately, but put all our heads together and who knows what we'd come up with .------------- I love dogs, I've always loved dogs |

Sounds a bit like Toby Driver material.  Hey Jacob, I checked out your band on youtube - sounds great. I didn't listen to the two covers, but I listened to the two originals and yeah, you guys are really good players, especially you, I mean you rip on that guitar. You utilize some pretty interesting chords and your bassist has got some good chops. -------------

This is completely non-prog but, I think it would be cool if Joanna Newsom and Jay Munly performed together. Just the two of them, Joanna on harp and occasional piano, Munly on banjo, both singing...I suspect it would be amazing. If they need percussion, they could use the guy Joanna brings on tour with her, I don't know his name but his percussion is really interesting and I feel it'd work well with what I imagine their music would end up being.

Thanks. Those chords I'm playing really aren't that complicated; most of them are just basic major and minor diatonic chords. There's another original video on our feed that was uploaded on a different channel where I use some jazz chords and stuff, though. That's the one we submitted to a battle of the bands in our area; there's a link in the comments where you can go vote if you want, anyone can do it. You might not have noticed the drummer as much, because he was in the background a bit, but he's really good too; not super flashy but amazingly solid, and some of his fills on Remind Me are pretty epic. Thought of another one I would like, all Scandinavian: Rikard Sjoblom (Beardfish): Vocals/Keyboards Christer Akerberg (Trettioariga Kriget): Guitar Dag Lunquist (Trettioariga Kriget): Drums Kristian Karl Hultgren (Wobbler): Bass/Saxophone Would have been all Swedish but I wanted Kristian Karl Hultgren of Wobbler over Jonas Reingold, and Wobbler's Norwegian. Jonas Reingold is fantastic as well though.

If I wanted something like a traditional mid-70s symphonic sound, I'd choose a line-up like this: Vocals/Keyboards - Steve Walsh Guitar 1 - Steve Morse Guitar 2 - Ritchie Blackmore Bass - Chris Squire Moogs and Mellotrons - Rick Wakeman Piano and whatever other keyboards they decide to use - Jordan Rudess Drums - Nick D'Virgilio For something a little more experimental: Vocals - Peter Hammill Guitar 1 - Robert Fripp Bass/Vocals - Greg Lake Keyboards/Sax/Violin/Vocals - Matthew Parmenter (Discipline) More keyboards - Rick Wright Drums - Pierre van der Linden ------------- "I am the one who crossed through space...or stayed where I was...or didn't exist in the first place...." |

Here's my ideal line-up for a pessimistic progressive bluegrass band. I'm specific. Bass guitarist - Bob Dylan (1967) Vocalist - Sam Cooke (1963) Backup Vocalist/Harmonies - Charlie Louvin (1966), Johnny Cash (2002) Mandolin - Ira Louvin (1962) Electric Guitar - David Gilmour (1977) Acoustic Guitar - Warren Zevon (!976) Drummer/Percussionist - Ringo Starr (1971) Lyricist - Leonard Cohen (1971), Roger Waters (1982) (working independently) Pianist/keyboards - Stevie Wonder (1976) Production team - Alan Parsons (1977), Phil Spector (working from prison) Songwriting team - John Lennon (1970), Sam Cooke (1963), Tom Waits (1992) Cover Art designer - H.R. Giger They'd all have to have been forced into living together in close unison for years. They'd have John Cage (1961) and Charlie Manson (1969) as inspirational gurus, and they would've all been forced to witness the self-immolation of Thich Quang Duc first-hand in full, empathetic context. They'd be recording music in 1973 and they'd have access to any equipment they'd need. As a measure of completion, each member would experience a violent electric shock twice per day at random intervals. It would be attributed to racist contempt. Plus they'd have a lot of grunge music to listen to.
