I was hoping to start exploring some more random choices for this edition, but with the relative failure of P.O.O. #3: DVD/Video I think I'll play it safe and throw some more simple ones at you. Do Prog fans not buy videos and DVD's of their favourite bands? Apparently not. Either way, if you didn't post in #3, now's your chance! Here it is; http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=87294." rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=87294.

Along with your selection for today, I'd also appreciate some "fan" feedback. Do you guys want me to continue to play it safe with some simple, obvious choices, or should I start throwing some tougher, more random ideas your way? Or should I just give up and find a new hobby? Let me know, and shape the future of P.O.O.!

People Over Oppression! Ermm

So with that out of the way, let's move on to a role every music fan can appreciate. The Guitar Player.

The rules are simple:

NO HONORABLE MENTIONS!

NO RUNNERS UP!

PICK ONLY ONE!!!

(Violations of these rules will not be tolerated, and offenders will be prosecuted).

And here's mine, a man who needs no introduction on a Progressive Rock website: John Petrucci!

And one final note; I can't believe there are still some people out there who don't get it. Who can't quite grasp the simple concept of a thread series titled "Pick Only One". It's not called "Pick Only One with a Runner Up", it's not "Top Ten List of..."... it's called "PICK ONLY ONE" for a reason! The rules are friggin' simple!!!

To those of you who participate correctly, I thank you, and wish you a good day. To those of you who don't, you are now on my deathlist. You've been warned.

I think you should mix the series up a bit.  Probably do one more basic one and then start throwing in some more obscure stuff, and some fun ones as well.  "Favorite prog hairstyle," "Favorite Peter Gabriel double entendre..." stuff like that.

Well, maybe not the second one.

I feel like they'd attract more people, though, and make them pay more attention to the series, so then once it gets a follwing Valarius can throw in some more quirky but still serious-ish ones.

John plays guitar and supplies some synth work on Cicatriz ESP. I believe he does not play the guitar solos through the song though. He does though, play the first two solos on L'Via L'Viaquez.  He is also noted to play rhythm guitar and some lead on Aputechture, and just "guitar" on bedlam and Octahedron.

You've prolly knew all of this, but honestly i had no prior knowledge of the specific guitar work John does nor could i find anywhere that told me.

It's funny, I hear all the time that Omar is the brains behind the music of TMV, but his solo work is absolute rubish as far as I'm concerned. (I'm perhaps the biggest fan of TMV's first 3 albums)

Because I've been listening to Camel lately, I choose Andy Latimer, who is very emotional. His style is in my opinion similar to Gilmour's, but I think his playing is a little better (although Time is still my favorite solo ever).

I'll go with Lifeson.
He got the chops, the technical skill, the feeling, his guitar tone is sick, and I think he has a unmistakable style.

I love his guitar work, and I love his unorthodox hard rock riffing style. He has lot of amazing solos, but the one from The Analog Kid and the one from Xanadu are by far my favorites, among many others (Limelight, Natural Science, Villa, etc...)

If you right click and go to 'Image info' it'll tell you the name of the pic is Michael Holmes, IQ's guitarist.

Very difficult, and I'm going to avoid the rather predictable choices we've seen so far and go with Jacob Holm-Lupoof White Willow.

Keep going with the series Valerius and throw out what ever topics you want, just know that some will always be better supported than others.

yeah don't get me wrong he's a great guitarist, and that particular solo is good. I've just never placed much emphasis on the idea of solos in general, I find they often detract from the overall quality of a given peice of music. I would rather gauge a guitarist's caliber with the impact he has on the musical direction.
Again, don't misunderstand, I like solos as much as anyone I just wish they weren't so often in rock music in general LOL (specially in terms of guitarists)

Well, I don't think Omar overdoes the solos, at least on the albums I've heard (live performances are another matter entirely).  I've never thought solos tended to detract from music (unless it's a particularly bad one) but I would agree that it gets annoying when guitarists think they have to put a solo in every song *cough* Petrucci *cough*.
