I don't if, like me, you find that some Peter Gabriel songs are really similar to Genesis in some points. A fair bit of PG-1 sounds not unlike Genesis to me. Certainly Moribund the Burgermeister could fit on any Genesis album and not be out of place. Also Waiting for the Big One and Here Comes the Flood have that symphonic epicness that is very reminicent of Genesis. ------------- What? |

I think only Hackett has moments on his solo albums that sound similar to Genesis. With Gabriel, I dunno, Moribund The Burgermeister from his first album sounds Genesis-y but I can't really think of anything else at the moment. ------------- Magma America Great Make Again |

But not Solsbury Hill. That great song in 7/4. It's definitetly a great change from Genesis because it's more poppy and more happy but it's good pop.

Interestingly, I think in some ways both PG and Genesis were evolving separately towards a similar style. The big booming drums and long sustained chord sound was found both on songs like "Biko" and songs like "Abacab". | Well, as I was gonna say Moribund The Burgermeister from Peter Gabriel 1, but it seems that's a popular choice. Reminiscent of The Colony Of Slippermen in an instrumental prospective. Possibly Humdrum, only due to the instrumental breaks in it. As all these are from Peter Gabriel's 'Car', this is the album that resembles The Lamb the most. Before the 80's. After, each Gabriel album had the 80's virus influence, not in a bad way, but sounds of the 80's. (of course besides Passion, and a few others) |

Solsbury Hill has that familiar sound and also Games Without Frontiers - verses. IN fact all of Peter Gabriel debut album sound like old Genesis style. -------------

| Don't know if any one particular song reminds me of Genesis. I think there are some songs that have some little bits of the symphonic in them-Humdrum, Here Comes the Flood. As mentioned by several, Moribund the Burgermeister also has some of that feel. A song like San Jacinto has an interesting progressive feel, but it's not really Genesis. So, I'd say no one song truly reminds me of Genesis, but there are bits here and there. |

Very much this. In some cases, it's kind of frustrating. I want to get into some of Gabriel's solo work, but, with a couple of exceptions, it's a pain trying to differentiate between the two. Not helped that Gabriel and Collins have similar voices. ------------- He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball! |

As has been said, much of the first album would have fitted onto a Genesis album, but after that, no. I remember Melody Maker reviewing III (Melt), and they said at the time that Gabriel was akin to stripping away the outer layers of an onion in trying to get away from the Genesis roots and finding his own "voice". In fact, that started with II (Scratch). Fripp, who produced, and Gabriel deliberately wanted to strip down the sound, although I guess In The Air, especially, could have fitted onto The Lamb. ------------- Enhance your life. Like some people already said, some of his early songs would have fit in 'The Lamb' like 'Moribund The Burgermeister', 'Here Comes The Flood' and 'On The Air'. I think from 'Car (1)' to 'So', he put out some great material. Never followed past 'So' though. |

I say The Family and the Fishing Net is a lot like Genesis. It's fairly lengthy, but most importantly, it's built up out of complex arrangements. The instrumental parts are given periodic deference and are more than a wee bit unusual. Catch the guitar lead once you figure out where it is and that it's actually a guitar playing. Sure you're not going to mistake it for an actual Genesis song, but you can imagine Gabriel bringing something like this to the group, and then when everyone's done with it, it would be an unmistakable old-Genesis style song. Anyone agree?
I also agree, though, that Steve Hackett is the most Genesis sounding. He also remains the most progressive in his approach and philosophy. |

all of Peter's solo stuf that ive heard has not sounded anything like his stuff with genesis. But I woulden't expect it to. Peter was only a fifth of Genesis, he made up only one fifth of Genesis' "sound". Also, Peter was no doubt infulinced by the punk and pop music being made after his time with genesis, so his "sound" was to change even further.

| I guess Solsbury Hill (which is basically reflecting back on his decision to leave Genesis) sounds like an updated version of a song from "From Genesis to Revelation", what with the acoustic guitar and string usage and all. But that's probably as close as it gets for me, much of solo work is completely different from what he did with Genesis. |
