A review of the bios is a good idea, and the one quoted is a good one as well. Recent posts have highlighted the archival nature of this site, rather than it being a current events site. Fair enough, but an Archival site has to be up to date and relevant, otherwise it is not an archive. Tell you what. Why don't we eliminate the sub-genres, and free up time for collabs to go through and update the bios and album data? (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.................... It's a similar problem to that of changing over sub-genres to albums, rather than artists. The site is now so huge that, to be honest, it would be a full time job for a year in a corporation, let alone a bunch of volunteers. I do, though, think that we can have a rethink of the way we do things. If we just had two sub-genres, prog & prog related, then that would free up the collabs on all the respective teams to engage themselves into becoming a true archival service, i.e. ensuring that bios were kept up to date (you could allocate this in alphabetical splits), and album data was accurate, & etc. I know that some people don't like me for saying it, but I would submit that the vast majority of visitors here don't give a toss as to whether Steve Hackett is in Symphonic or Eclectic. What they want is accurate, up to date, and informative information in the shape of a bio, discography, and album reviews, in order to get information, or maybe see if they fancy buying an album they previously had not heard of. I like you just fine Steve, but I do disagree with tossing out subgenres. Those categorizations were what brought me to this site in the first place (above any other site). It aided me in finding music similar to what I already liked at a glance.

What we do is try to watch for sub-par bios on RPI artist pages and update them when we have time. It's rainy day work. If someone brings one to our attention we do it faster of course. I also will update bios, broken links, and poor photos on bands outside of RPI when I find them. Just did one the other day. Any of us can be on the lookout for insufficient content and spruce it up when necessary. We could dedicate people to the mission, assuming we had the extra hands, or we can all commit to doing it when we see it. |

With Mickty and raff but mainly with HT and ClemofNazareth we had to write 200 reviews in a few months, because some really sucked,.. others were almost propaganda and some couldn't be called Bios because they said (literally) "Classic 70's band influenced by YES, GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, PINK FLOYD and JETHRO TULL, a great addition to Prog Archives" Hey, I don't know why everybody mentioned PINK FLOYD,. KING CRIMSON and JETHRO TULL on a Symphonic bio. But we once corrected a bio made by Erik (Who in those days was authorized to create a link for his store) and it caused a scandal by Erik  , who said we were boycotting him, so we didn't touched the one for Chris, I will personally make a new one, now that Erik is not here.Please Robert, make a new Echolyn bio, I'll be thankful, last week I made a one for SQUACKETT and one for a Kraut band which I was familiar with, so I know how genre teams need this help. COLOUR HAZE, is a Krautrock band formed in Germany 1994, by Stefan Koglek (vocal, guitar), Tim Höfer (drums), Christian Wiesner (bass). In 1995 the release their debut “Chopping Machine” as a tree-piece, the album is in a style caught between a classic Heavy Rock (Black Sabbath), and the Grunge popular at the time (Pearl Jam). Between 1995 and 1999 the band went through a series on member changes, including singer Felix Neuenhoff replace Koglek on the vocal parts. From the recording of “Periscope” (1999), they were again reduces to a tree-piece Stefan Koglek (vocal, guitar), Manfred Merwald (drums), Philipp Rasthofer (bass). “Periscope” marks the start of the new COLOUR HAZE, with a solid and Heavy, Psychedelic Stoner Rock, clearly inspired by Jimi Hendrix but definitely also sending thoughts in the direction of the early Krautrock. Over the years the band have become a bit less heavy, exploring even more the slow buildup on very long tracks, with a warmer and softer sound, and a crafty groove. Any album they have done from “Periscope” and onwards are worth a listen, but “Temple” 2006 mark a refinement both in their sound and the melodies they create. May be seen, as the start of the third chapter. I know this is old, but in the end ... you know folks well enough around here and what they like ... you can always ask someone, and the most they can do is reply with a no. I have offered, and was turned down, because what I wanted to do with the biography of Carmen, was intertwine all three of the albums that also tell the story of the band ... and how it came up and went down. Much of it was also written on the liner notes in their website where the band explained a lot of things. That was turned down and I have not done anymore since. I still believe, as I did then, that if we are going to be "progressive", we have to make room for creativity, and what I had done was different and positive ... but was set down. I won't disagree with the set down! You're only making this writer do even more! But you can ask! I have no qualms helping something I believe in, but some folks think I have personal issues with, and I don't ... you all work hard and put in the time ... what more can anyone ask?

Fates Warning biography - please feel free to edit and correct. I've edited this and fleshed this bio out a bit more, and corrected a few errors... Their 1999 album isn't bad, is it... Hadn't heard it before - might have to get it on CD ;-) ------------------------------- FATES WARNING are a progressive metal band from Hartford, Connecticut, US, and are considered to be one of the pioneers of American progressive metal, along with fellow country-mates DREAM THEATER and QUEENSRYCHE. The early music of FATES WARNING drew heavy inspiration from the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal from bands such as IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST and later they incorporated progressive elements as inspired from prog bands YES and RUSH. FATES WARNING were formed in 1982 with an initial line-up of John ARCH (vocals), Jim MATHEOS and Victor ARDUINI (guitars), Steve ZIMMERMAN (drums) and Joe DIBIASE (bass guitar). This initial line-up of the band produced two studio albums, the 1984 debut "Night on Bröcken" and the 1985 follow-up "The Spectre Within". Both albums did relatively poorly in commercial terms with neither of them entering the billboard charts. It wasn't until their third album, 1986's "Awaken The Guardian" that FATES WARNING had some commercial success. This album was the last to feature their original vocalist, John ARCH. The 1988 album "No Exit" witnessed a significant change for FATES WARNING, with a new vocalist, Ray ADLER, and a new musical style drawing on heavy inspiration from the American thrash metal scene which had erupted at the time. At this point in the bands history Jim MATHEOS, Steve ZIMMERMAN and Joe DIBIASE were the only original members to remain in the band. The 1988 album "No Exit" deserves special mention for the final track on the album, the 22-minute 'The Ivory Gate Of Dreams', which has become something of a legendary progressive metal song. After this album Steve ZIMMERMAN left the band. The 1989 album "Perfect Symmetry" abandoned the thrash metal leanings of their previous album and was a far more mellow affair, and showed more progressive rock leanings and less metal influence. This album was followed up by the 1991 album "Parallels", which featured a young James LABRIE of DREAM THEATER fame making a guest appearance on the song 'Life In Still Water'. Shortly after the release of their sixth album FATES WARNING split-up and remained inactive for almost three years. The band reformed in 1994 with the album "Inside Out", which continued in the same spirit as their previous 1991 album. In many ways FATES WARNING had mirrored the creative path of fellow American progressive band QUEENSRYCHE by abandoning their more metallic influences to create moodier and mellower progressive rock music. In 1996 long time bass player and founder member Joe DIBIASE left the band, leaving only Jim MATHEOS as the last remaining member from the original 1982 line-up. In 1998 the band released "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey", which consisted of a single 50-minute progressive rock/metal song split into twelve movements. This album shows considerable progressive experimentation and is one of the better places to start with the band. In the 2000's FATES WARNING released just one album, "FWX" from 2004. In 2010 the band reformed the classic line-up from the "Parallels" period for reunion shows to celebrate the reissue and remastered release of the 1991 "Parallels" album. The last FATES WARNING album to be released was in 2013 and titled "Darkness In A Different Light", which is their first studio album in almost a decade. As of 2015 FATES WARNING are active and playing occasional live shows, and plan on reuniting the original line-up of the band for a special one-off show in 2016 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1986 album, "Awaken The Guardian". Agreed? -------------- Not satanic, not samba and not a trio, this avant-garde group plays a fascinating de-construction of all rules Brazilian Popular Music (MPB in portuguese) established along the years. Their instrumentation is as varied as the instrumentation the styles they incorporate classicaly used. In the first works, "Misantropicalia" and "Sangrou", the group (leaded by the bass player and composer Munha) gave a few first hints of what the project might be, attacking vivdly the samba-rock (and several others) musical structures. In the following works, all intitled "Bad Trip Simulator" (#2, #1 and #3, respectively), a kind of decomposition of brazilian structures in three movements were made. In fact, they've called the "Putrefaction Trilogy" to establish with precision the goal of the group - this time, altogether with the samba and MPB re-compositions, the northeastern sounds also were re-thinked and played. Your revision is perfect, thanks. I've tried to re-write that sentence to point out that they are using the same instruments as the musical genres they are destroying. Start Playing piano and composing started at an early age and he continued with this a lot in his life. In 2014, he began composing orchestral pieces and piano compilations and publishing them on Youtube. These orchestral pieces were largely inspired by trailer music which has always been an influence. First albums After a little while he composed his first orchestral album, called 'Nature'. In less than a year a new album came out: 'The Transition'. It had a more realistic orchestral sound and functioned as a bridge between orchestral music and band-oriented music. These albums were never officially released. Prog period Pascal discovered prog, which would be a big love from that point. Inspired mainly by Pink Floyd, he made the album Space (July 2015) just 3 months after The Transition. Still the use of orchestra was prominent. Next, he wanted to develop his own style more and thus mixed a lot of piano and orchestra in his sound. The result was a concept album: City Between Two Seas (January 2016). From this point, this album and the Space were available for sale and he gained more international fans. David, Of course it depends from one case to another, to be rigorous certain bands would require a total rewrite while other will benefit just from a more light editing and/or updating. I think we shouldn't let be overwhelmed by the (eventually) huge amount of work required, if we start thinking in terms of numbers it's easy to get discouraged and give up right away  If we could coordinate a joint effort I'm certain it will positively reinforce the individual commitement and make the task a more pleasant one (the main personal goal, as I see it) and productive (the final collective result). Let me know your POV |

Happy to chip in, we completed this in the HP team recently so there should not more than a handful that need updating (if any). It has proved more difficult with Prog metal which has been hit and miss. I think we can start from the ones that are in urgent need of update and concern more well-known bands. If you can co-ordinate this and we spread this out to more people I think we can see some more progress. |

You could give it a try, I hope you get some interest; most "old" members are aware of this but some of the newest (and perhaps keener) might not be. I believe that when it comes to allocating it would be important to get some commitment to do this, even if it is 1-2 bands per person. You have a good team already building up here. |
