Phideaux Xavier posted this on Facebook today:

Oh dear, I think we're back to a "double album" for Infernal. Some new songs came into being: Here's the new rundown... Some of the titles have changed:

Side One (21 min)
1. Cast Out And Cold
2. The Error Lives On
3. Inquisitor

Side Two (18 min)
4. We Only Have Eyes For You
5. Walk On Water
6. The Order Of Protection (Part One)

Side Three (18 min)
7. In Dissonance We Play
8. Prickle
9. Metro Deathfire
10. The Sleepers Awaken
11. The Order Of Protection (Part Two)

Side Four (20 min)
12. From Hydrogen To Love
13. Eternal

I'm excited to begin recording at the end of July. We've got the studio booked from July 28 til August 6, Mark, John, Gabe, Mat, Rich, Ariel and I will be toiling for 9 days...

The aim is to record as much of it "live" as possible (with overdubs to complete later). The vocals will be done a few weeks later, also as much live as possible so we can feed off each other's energy. A good deal of Snowtorch was recorded live and I thought there was some good energy in those performances.

Here's hoping this concluding chapter will cap things off nicely! (and I hope we can finish it in time for the end of the world in December...)

I like how he listed the tracks as if it were to be released on vinyl. It looks like it'll all fit on one CD anyway.

I've been waiting for this one for a while! Snowtorch is neat, but I'm really looking for more in the vein of Doomsday Afternoon and Number Seven.

Finally!! and it's better than I expected!. (nearly hour and a half). After Snowtorch I felt so bad, thinking that infernal could be a short album, but this is crazy.  I believe in Phideaux, he can fulfill my expectations. Bowdown

I really like the 'vinyl format', and I get rather annoyed at bands who release a 50 minute album on double. Grrrrrr

Anyway, I loved Snowtorch, so this will be great.

Snowtorch was my first Phideaux album, and so far the only one I have. I put Snowtorch in my top 5 2011 albums, so I'm looking forward to this, especially if it's related to Snowtorch.

Snowtorch was in my top 5 of last year too, Number Seven was probably my favorite album of 2009 and Doomsday Afternoon is one of the best records I've ever heard.

Yeah, I'm excited. Tongue

Good to hear this from Phideaux.

Really it's not related to Snowtorch, Infernal it's related to The Great Leap and Doomsday Afternoon , cause it's the third part of the trilogy about the end of the world. Snowtorch was a kind of "side album" he did, a masterpiece too. (sorry if my post it's so obvious or something, but I've assumed that you are refering Snowtorch as a part of the trilogy, sorry if I'm misunderstanding you)

See the post above yours.  This IS the completion of the trilogy, started with The Great Leap, then Doomsday Afternoon, competed with this album, Infernal.

No it's fine, I was referring to Snowtorch. I'm not very knowledgeable about Phideaux, as I only have Snowtorch. Well, I guess I'm going to have to change that and get some of his back catalog, so I'm up to date when this new album comes out.

Good!

If you want to take a listen of his whole discography, he uploaded it free (best quality) on bandcamp:  http://phideaux.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - http://phideaux.bandcamp.com/

If you prefer to listen the "conceptual" albums, like Snowtorch (more classic structure, more 70's influence, long songs, etc..) I'll recommend you: Doomsday Afternoon (considered the best one by the fans, me too) -> Chupacabras ->  Number Seven

And, if you want to listen more "easy listening" or "art rock" (as he say) albums, with short unconnected songs: -> Ghost Story (my personal best of non-conceptual albums) -> 313 (recorded in one day!) -> The Great Leap -> Fiendish

I hope you enjoy the albums of one of the best crossover prog composers of the decade!.

By the way,  Phideaux opened last week a facebook page for his new band/side-project, Mogon:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mogon/416020898419459" rel="nofollow - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mogon/416020898419459

Gotta love an artist that lets you try before you buy.  I got interested when Doomsday came out.  That's why I keep making jokes about the trilogy.  The final album kept getting put on hold.  I got a big about half of his discography right away and then eased off.  Now I have everything and like to stay current. Big smile

As I've supposed , with the opening of the official Facebook page (  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mogon/416020898419459" rel="nofollow - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mogon/416020898419459  ) , Phideaux have released yesterday a lot of info about Mogon! Seems that Phideaux wants to collapse the heart of his followers, in two days he have announced four albums!.

So that's the info:

As Xavier says on his FB , "Mogon is a fractal of Phideaux, containing the same members in smaller congregations. The music is more minimalist and simple, with an emphasis on lyrics and textures. We await the release of these two albums and the dawn of Mogon".

Here's the covers:

FIRST ALBUM - These Are Our True Faces

SECOND ALBUM: We Saw The World And It's Beautiful

If you want to listen some Mogon, there's one song released for the huge project "Decameron: Ten days in 100 Novellas" , the song is titled "Snuff", and if you search, google can fulfill your dreams LOL

P.S. - As I'm not a english native speaker, it's possible that my skills make my words a little bit cryptical, sorry in advance for the mistakes.

Fantastic updates on Phideaux related items!  I have all the CDs and have 4 items in my iTunes collection.  A couple of suggestions.  1.  I downloaded the Decameron collection on Amazon's digital service because the 4 CD set was about $20, I believe half of what iTunes wants.  The Mogon song "Snuff" is excellent, well on the level of Phideaux material.  That makes me quite eager for 2 albums of Mogon material.  2.  I found a Phideaux related song on iTunes "supermorpher".  Search for Mystery of the Egg by R Weis, almost 9 minute song that is well worth adding to the collection.  3.  Sample the Dante's Purgatorio track on iTunes called "Strange Cloud(Canto XVI)".  This is an awesome 7.5 minute tune not on any of his albums.  Again well worth the 99 cents!  4.  Finally search "Tempest of Mutiny" on iTunes.  I believe this is a Phideaux song not found on the albums.  Eight minutes of a pure thrill ride worth every penny.  I have been impressed with the quality of all Phideaux's endeavors.  He is a guy that you can equate with quality much like Steven Wilson.  Hope this might provide some pleasure to discerning ears out there.

hey, thanks for the interest in our music.

While we're on the subject, I wanted to let folks know that I am making a freebie "promotional issue" of some music I'm involved with to give out at Nearfest.

This project collects some finished tracks from soon to be released albums as well as two unreleased live recordings of my band. I think the uninitiated might enjoy some of these pieces. We'll also upload them as a "pay what you like" on bandcamp (aka free).  I'm glad In Prog We Trust highlighted some of the unreleased/obscure items that are out there.  This collection brings together many of those things and for free (if you like, you can also pay if you want).

This free disc will come wrapped in a single cardboard sleeve and contain these tracks:

1. Thank You For The Evil (unreleased orchestral edit of a song from "Doomsday Afternoon")
2. Tempest Of Mutiny (from "7½")
3. Strange Cloud (from "7½"; also available on Dante's Purgatorio from Musea)
4. Out Of The Angry Planet (Live at 3RP, studio version will appear on "7½")
5. Chupacabras (Live at Festival Crescendo)
6. Snuff (from Mogon "We Saw The World And It's Beautiful"; also available on "Decameron" from Musea)
7. The Chairs (from Mogon "These Are Our True Faces")

I'm printing 500 copies to bring to Nearfest. Hopefully I'll be able to pass them out, or find a friendly vendor to put them on their table. If you see me, ask for one. Can't wait for the shows!

Also, for those who won't be at the show, you can download it for free here:

Thanks Atomic, I hope you will review it!  But, that album hasn't been recorded yet!  We start in July.  In the meantime, we have a sampler of some other things we'll be releasing to which I hope you will take a listen.    Contains 3 songs from 7½, and 2 songs from upcoming Mogon albums as well as a few rare and live things.

7½ is still scheduled.  Have a few things to do to finish it, but 2 songs fully mixed, 2 songs ready to mix and 2 songs need a few extra vocals and some guitar work, then ready to mix (which has been the problem...  Engineer/Producer has had too much work and doesn't really want to face mixing this stuff!!!)  But, it will come out soon, and until then, I've got the promotional issue to whet some whistles...

Phideaux, thanks for providing the link to your sampler!  Listened to several tracks last night and have Chupacabras spinning currently.  I cannot get enough of your fabulous catalog!  Quick question for the prog fanatics not making the trek to Pennsylvania for NEARfest.  Would you be willing to send out a CD copy of the sampler to your devout followers who send a selfaddressed mailer to you?  I will download on my computer but would love to have a physical copy of the CD for my collection.  Thanks for considering.  Sorry I will not be able to say hello at the festival.  In Prog We Trust.
P.S.  any plans to play a show in the Southeast U.S. in the future?

Posted By: Phideaux
Date Posted: June 13 2012 at 20:05
Hey Prog, once I get the sampler cds, I will organize a way to send them out.  If you're in US,  s.a.s.e. is a great way to go.  Unfortunately we have no plans to play in the future. Because the economics of our band are crazy, we had our "last gig" in October at Orion studios (although with the new album that we are planning to record, I might come out of mothballs to do another show to record for DVD and "cap off" this era of my music).  We can't afford to rehearse, record and perform.  We just all live too scattered around, so we've done some shows and will release some live stuff soon.  A sample of that is on the sampler disc, but it's a strictly money losing enterprise for me to play live in this configuration.  Mogon, however, is another story and that project may be wanting to play live soon, of course it's a separate repertoire for the most part.

Phideaux,  Thanks for the update on touring challenges.  Entirely understandable.  I wish I had gone to the Pittsburgh festival a couple of years back when you played.  I will be front and center if the Mogon project is able to play live.  My section of the country is a black hole for good prog music.  Before I was married I attended multiple NEARfests and had a blast.  Thanks for reaching out to your fan base!  I hope more and more people discover your music repertoire allowing you to continue creating world class compositions.  Any thoughts on creating a Phideaux Iphone app?  I have enjoyed Steven Wilson's app and would spend lots of time on a Phideaux app.  In Prog We Trust

This is well known. That was not what I was saying.

I am wondering what the "fractals of Phideaux" means. Having listened to the two tracks, it does sound a bit quieter and less orchestrated. Do the fractals mean it's more of a four piece rock outfit? Or will various Mogon releases have, say, Valerie on them? Wink

Posted By: Phideaux
Date Posted: June 14 2012 at 08:12
Yes, my eternal and fluid friend, various Mogon releases might and will have Valerie on them.  Mogon, to be perfectly honest, might have had something to do with my "solo" project morphing into a 10 piece band.  After that, it became a point of interested to make albums with those ten people.  And when you have 10 people participating in a project one must create music suitable for 10 people to be involved in.  BUT, it is hard to involve that many people in any coherent project and to sustain that without the inevitable issues of some people feeling very included and others not so much.  So, Mogon is a way to create music that isn't shackled to that way of thinking.  Mogon was discovered when I made The Chairs during the recording session for Snowtorch.  We had a small group of folks and they keyboard player had to leave early and I sent drummer and bassist from the room and set about to write a new song.  I let them back into the studio after 20 min and briefly explained the song and then we did 2 takes, the second of which you hear in the compilation.  After we heard the playback, I enjoyed the result and thought "this isn't Phideaux music it's...  Mogon!"  The word popped into my head and I decided to google it to find out what I could about it.  There was nothing (this was 2010) and the closest thing was a word "Mogons" or Moguns which referred to a God in Europe, but that wasn't what the same spelling.  But, as the word looks "strong" and sounded neutral enough, I started to get an idea that I could create music that was more minimal and "small" in scope and release it under this name.  Thus was born the "band" Mogon.

Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to vinyl releases from Phideaux/MogonWink. Snowtorch was a great album. Still is!!!! Is there any hope for vinyl release of the previous albums? I am curious how the side project will sound. By the way, there is a German band called Mogon (Death Metal gerne, or something like that).

Posted By: Phideaux
Date Posted: June 15 2012 at 17:15
Is there a German death metal band?  When did they start?  Certainly not when I googled the name a couple years ago...   We would love to put the albums out in vinyl, but we haven't really sold many vinyl and I don't really want to have 482 copies of all my albums lying around!!!  Except that vinyl sounds so great.  I was amazed to hear the difference between Snowtorch vinyl vs. cd.  Some of the CD was punchier and the LP wasn't as good close to the center, but the first part of each side was sublime!

Infernal has no real release date because we're only just beginning to record it in July/August and things take a long time to complete here in the land of Phideaux...

I have snowtorch only in vinyl, so i don't know how the cd sounds. But I think the cd oughts to be punchier, as the mastering in cds is usually more compressed and flat accross the frequency spectrum. The great advantage of vinyl though is  dynamics and warmth, especially in analog recordings. Anyway, no matter the media, can't wait for the releases!!!!!!!!

Posted By: Phideaux
Date Posted: June 15 2012 at 19:14
well, since we mastered both the vinyl and the CD ourselves (we didn't cut the vinyl, but we provided the compressed, etc. files) I can say there was nothing added to the CD in mastering (in terms of loudness and compression).  Our goal was to keep it as natural as possible.   And the vinyl cutter only applied whatever EQ curve is necessary for vinyl, so it was the same source for both.  So, in that sense it was fascinating to hear the difference in sound.

Yeah, a bit of research shows that Mogon is a nobody black metal band that black metal fans don't like. I think you're gonna win this fight, Phid. Tongue

PS I love the horns on Snuff. Really working for me.

PPS while we're here, did anyone pick up the Number Seven remaster? I have the original release and love it quite immensely, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on anything extra. Because as things have settled over the years, I'm pretty sure N7 is sitting as the top of my Phideaux rankings.

Good Friday evening Phideax and fellow proggers.  With the talk about the vinyl releases, have you kicked around the idea of releasing anything in your back catalog in 5.1 surround sound?  The discs that are done well with this separation are tremendous.  The Phideaux soundscapes would be tailor made for the surround experience!

Also, can you give a bit of background about the Supermorpher song?

Finally, starved for anything and everything Phideaux, I picked up a copy of Friction from an Amazon seller.  It is an interesting listen and I rather enjoy hearing the foundation of your greatness.

Hope you have a terrific weekend.  In Prog We Trust

I also have the original and I don't see any noticeable difference between the original and the remaster, they are quite subtle (you can listen to the remastered version on http://phideaux.bandcamp.com/album/number-seven-remastered" rel="nofollow - Phideaux' Bandcamp ).

Liquid, when N7 came out I was very alarmed at its sound.  I thought it sounded brittle and somewhat like "tin foil".  I didn't understand how so many beautiful ingredients could go into a stew that tasted sour.  We did some research into analog mixing boards because I was convinced the digital domain was adding errors into the sound.  However, the boards that we wanted exceeded our budget.  We got some new (and costly) tube compressors and outboard gear for mastering and thenGabe, my producer, did some digging about mix thresholds in pro tools and we discovered that even though digidesign says that 0 = 0, when you add 78 tracks of real time mixing, the program makes approximations in its calculations and so degrades the final signal.  The solution, postulated some on the forum, was to mix at a very low level so that nothing would be worked too much to capacity and then bring up the final 2 track mix to 0.

From this process we went back and remixed N7.  It solved the problem for me of the sour sound.  It was a very subtle difference, but an important one in achieving the sound we wanted.  If you send me a self addressed envelope I will slip a new disc in it and send it to you, liquid.  Then, you can hear it.

As for Mogon, I hope there isn't an issue, but to be honest I think we operate at such different spectrums that I don't anticipate many problems.

As for Friction---  I'm starting to get very nostalgic for that album.  I'd like to "recreate" and "reinvent" that album using much of what's there in remixed form and by cutting one or two songs that I am not so into, plus re doing a few completely.

Supermorpher was a collaboration with my friend R. Weis, who is a sound designer and works with his own home made samples.  We sampled some sounds on an acoustic guitar (with a butter knife, inspired by Daevid Allen and Hillage) and then created this song together in sections.  I contributed a riff and then R. did the same and we orchestrated each other's parts.  It is a fun track, I really love the end because it's so transcendent.

I was fortunate to produce an album of R. Weis called "Mystery Of The Egg" and supermorpher was on that album.  My intention when / if I release vinyl copies of my albums, is to get supermorpher onto side 4 of Ghost Story because it dates from that period.  It will also be possible for me to release it on a compilation of Phideaux in the future.

thanks for hunting that down.  I realized I didn't have a copy of it in L.A. a couple months ago and I was able to download it from Amazon.  That was so cool to realize that I could access my own work from a commercial site~!  Pretty humbling and cool.  Enjoy the night.

So, would you suggest investing in the remastered Number 7?  I guess I haven't noticed much in the way of issues with the sound of the album.  I usually jump on remastered versions of albums I really like, but since the remaster came out not too long after the original version and the original version didn't sound bad at all to me, I skipped over that one.

A new version of Friction would be cool.  There was some sweet stuff on that, although there was also some filler (your writing and execution have definitely matured since then),   But still, it's definitely a worthwhile album and one that some reworking of could make it better.

By the way, listening now to the sampler.  Killer stuff.  Getting ready to start the live version of Chupacabras.  Really can't wait for 7 1/2 after hearing some of the tunes that will be on that one.

I don't suggest getting the "upgrade".  I only express that I felt the sound needed upgrading (and I'd sold out the first run and was ready to do the second).  But, remember, at the time we offered anyone a free swap out and we had the opportunity to keep the original and download a lossless version of the original.  I'll still send the link for that download to anyone who wants to burn their own copy of the new version.  I plan to do the same thing when we re-release Doomsday this summer.  We have been out of print on Fiendish and Doomsday for some time.  Ghost Story is about to go out of print as well.  All of these albums will be remixed/remastered for the new releases (which heretofore will come in mini LP sleeves like Snowtorch (with the original booklets).  So, I can't say that you'll have a different experience with N7.v2, but it's worth a S.A.S.E. to find out if you're in the US

Yeah, in terms of Friction, I'm glad you see the "pearls amidst the spoils".  I wouldn't say there was filler, per se, because there were plenty of things left off that album.  But, there is a "side three" quality to the latter mid section.  That has a bit of "enough already" to it before the album comes in for the conclusion.  I would cut some of that.  However, I also do enjoy some of the weird noise bits and might keep those...  We'll see...  I just "listened" to the live Chupacabras today and it brought tears to my eyes.  I really hadn't HEARD it before I was so busy making it, and commenting on the mix and asking Gabe to bring out this instrument (or bury that one if it made a blunder...).  So, to sit down and finally enjoy it was fun.  I got to listen to the parts that I don't normally concentrate on.  Fun.

That live version of "Chupacabras" might be better than the studio version.

If you didn't know, "Cupacabras" was my introduction to Phideaux (well, "Okay," was, but okay LOL).

That was sort of what I meant, not so much filler I guess, but just that it seemed to drag in parts.  The latter mid section does sport my favorite song on the album though ("Claw the Land"), so don't remove that one if you do a reboot.

You haven't sold many vinyl because of their released date, don't you think? Snowtorch have been released in CD around april 2011 and the vinyl came few month later. Maybe people didn't want to wait for it (or didn't know), and many bought the cd. I have wait for the vinyl because i love how it sounds, but i don't know if i will have bought it, if i'd already had Snowtorch in cd. (i don't know if it's enough clear, sorry for my english...)
So, I think if the cd and the vinyl are released in same time, you'll sell many more (it's just my opinion Wink).
Anyway I really hope that you can print more albums in vinyl!

I've just downloaded Supermorpher from CDBaby and i'm very surprised! It sounds very different from your own music, very electronic and experimental. But it's not bad at all!

Yes, supermorpher isn't my track.  it is a track I collaborated on another artist's album.  So, it is a different style completely.  But, you can possibly hear my DNA in there.

For folks who were thinking about upgrading to the New Number Seven.  Here's a link to download the album in wav format.  You can construct the cd by burning these with no space between to hear the fuller fidelity...

I think the greater problem Guimabvue is that I haven't really researched where to go to sell my vinyl.  I would like VERY MUCH to redo the catalogue in vinyl, but it costs so much to make the blasted cover art!  Anyone know any good printers who do gatefold covers of small runs for cheap?

The mean you have chosen for Snowtorch was great, though: had many of the strengths of both the CD and the vinyl. I, however, missed the booklet (which is my favorite part in having the physical copies).

yes, the booklet was dispensed with.  We instead used the tri fold lyric thing.  It's sad, but we are transitioning to a vinyl format for future releases, although with Infernal, we will have a booklet like we had with Doomsday, and previous albums, when rereleased, will have their original booklets inside the vinyl style sleeve.  The LP editions, will dispense with the booklet and just take some of the ideas and utilize them for the gatefold...

Oh, the format wars...

Not exactly.  I'm saying that in the future I will house my compact disc editions in "mini LP sleeves" of a high quality with an insert that contains the pertinent information, but the cover will be a shrunken version of the LP sleeve.

This assumes there will be a vinyl edition of all the albums, which I hope there will be.  There will, at least, be a design for what those vinyl LP editions would look like.

therefore, in a perfect world, we would put out a CD and an LP...  Downloads will be available via piracy sites and places like itunez and bandclap

Hello Phideaux,

I truly loved the vinyl edition of `Snowtorch', and it was just a wonderful and endlessly relistenable prog album! I also thought it was quite accessible to people who normally wouldn't be interested in prog - going by people in my office at work who've asked what I was listening to! :)

Did I read you correctly from a post earlier on that the vinyl copies didn't sell very well and that you've had a heap left over?!

So my question is, do you feel it will be worth your time, effort, and most importantly money, to release future albums/reissues on the vinyl format?

Of course I hope you do, as I prefer getting my prog albums on that format, but I don't know if that's a realistic request from your point of view!

By the way, I would say please come down to Australia and play some shows, what with Australia being the prog capital of the world - note obvious sarcasm! Wishful thinking to see your band live!

Hey Aussie-Byrd!  Australia is my second best friend!  (a Kath & Kim reference...)

I WISH to high heaven we could release all our stuff in vinyl, but I'm skint now and the vinyl didn't sell.  I didn't do a good enough job of trying to sell it, however.

But, in future, I'm hopeful that we will continue to try and get vinyl editions of future albums.  It's the older ones that might not get done.  However, when we put out our next album Infernal, we'll also do a commemorative LP edition of  "The Great Leap"/"Doomsday Afternoon"/"Infernal" as a 6 LP set (with Leap/Doom sharing three discs, Infernal on two and a bonus mystery disc of Doom related alternate mixes, live stuff and some rare bits.

My hope is to do it all on vinyl ultimately.  Wish I could come to Australia, but it would cost too much to get the band down there.

And to Slartibartfast -- don't I totally agree!!!  We should have had small editions of the cardboard covers with a booklet.  It's only right and proper!  Jewel cases are evil sent from the Flying Spaghetti Monster's nemesis "Nemesis"

My house had hard floors (no carpet) for many years and so many of those bugger jewel cases committed suicide.  I do have two that justified the plastic case: Gentle Giant - In A Glass House and Dark Matter - Seeing Strange Lights.

how thick/sturdy are these mini-lp replicas? I don't have any of these things... well, i know they aren't digipacks... I do have a few super-thin paper cd containers, for instance a few amon tobin records that came in hard paper... approximating thin cardboard... also have some old haino/fush*tsusha cds that came in big paper folders...  So are these lps 'bigger' than jewel cases (flat area)?

The Mini LP format is taller than a jewel box, but in square format, just like a shrunken down LP cover.  They are of two types:  Direct to board, which is like LPs from mid 70s on (like ELO Out Of The Blue, Yes Relayer).  The cheaper kind (to make) is the old style, which is paper over cardboard (like Beatles Sgt. Pepper, Zappa Uncle Meat in original US pressings).  This style wasn't really used in UK, more of a US style.  That is the style that costs way less to produce (at least from the printer that I've found).  This is different from the types of mini lp style things I've seen that are not to the specification, where they can be just as big as the CD itself -- ie. Beatles On Capitol box set, Simon & Garfunkel.  These are usually just the CD in the cardboard, whereas the so called "Japanese Mini LP" style shows far more care in replicating the original LP experience with an inner sleeve and inserts if they came with the original album.   The Sony multi pack releases, where you get 5 Mahavishnu Orch albums in one little box are no more than slightly thicker inner sleeves with the outer sleeve printing and no spine to speak of - these are atrocious.

My belief is that the Japanese style Mini LP editions should be standard - and have become standard for my future releases and reissues of my work.  I would prefer direct to board but it's 2x as expensive and the Mini LP format is already way more expensive than jewel cases for the limited runs that I do.

They do not fit in with other CDs in that they are taller and shallower, but I don't care because it makes the experience a bit less "plastic".  I really HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE digipacks because they are the worst of both worlds.  They have the nasty plastic and when the spindles break you can't even replace them.  Plus they are no smaller than the jewel cases.

I would prefer to use no plastic except the disc and inner bag and digipacks still rely on plastic.  Also, I don't like the digipack dimensions which are identical to jewel case.

I also hate the cheapie "eco wallets" and whatnot that come from Disk makers and the like.  They just feel a bit like a cheat and seem somewhat disposable.

These are my pontifications about packaging.  But, I know many people don't care that much about music packaging.  I believe it is a vital part of the whole music experience and for that reason we go the extra mile (and always have) in our artwork, booklets and production.

i think it's an interesting topic... and i could obsess about it as well... however, i find that my knowledge is deficient, because of lack of experience.. i haven't seen some of those old LPs you are referencing.  At least I understand what you mean about the mini lp being square rather than rectangular like jewel cases and digipacs(sh%t, as you've said)...
What I've seen that seems to work is a cotton cd cover inside a harder cardboard case.. but that's not what you are talking about -i don't think..? i have a couple of those from japan.. i think what used to be john zorn's avant label...(early 90s) but i could be wrong..? some of those releases were just jewel cases as well... i gave away some of this stuff and the rest is buried at another residence so I can't check.  Cds on hard paper are not a good idea... the new can lost tapes cd set is a particularly bad case...

what i always wonder about cds... it seems like they are very easy to damage as far as scratches and accumulation of 'film' and 'dirt/crud'... i've had several hundred cds sitting around for 10-15 years and when i take them out and check they seem a lot 'dirtier' than they should be... ah well, probably just bad memory...

but i do wonder, could there be a better surface for cds so they don't get scratched, scuffed, and accumulate crud so easily?  i've known for the last decade i should have gone into materials science...Cry

Yes, the "cotton" cd sleeve within a harder cardboard cover is quite like what I'm talking about.  I just don't use the cotton sleeve, but a low scratching polythene sleeve.  Both are good for not scratching.

We just got done recording the basic tracks for the double LP.  I'm so happy it's finished and I think the tracks turned out okay!  Fingers crossed.  The vocalists have yet to do their tracks and we need a bit of electric guitar and a bit of cello/violin/flute...

From July 28 through August 4 we worked at Firehouse Studios in Pasadena, California (Pasadena being where L. Ron Hubbard and Jack Parsons - a space scientist at JPL - did a lot of their sex magick explorations...).  There, we rehearsed and recorded approximately two songs per day, concentrating mostly on the rhythm tracks.  We had our two keyboard players, Mark Sherkus and Johnny Unicorn as well as Gabriel Moffat on Electric Guitar and Dobro, Mathew Kennedy on bass and Bloody Rich Hutchins on drums.  I, Phideaux Xavier, alternated between acoustic guitar in the "walk through" room or grand piano (bosendorfer) in the iso piano room.

On Wed, August 1, we had a small film crew there to document the creation of the song "From Hydrogen To Love".  However, we went late into the night on that long form song and the film crew didn't stick around for the big finish (or late night sputter as we later came back and rerecorded the back end to find a bit more energy).

The recordings both disappoint and excite me.  Surprising things happened to the songs and the artist is rarely satisfied with the final version.  It always could be better.  However, I'm trying to learn to accept that this group of musicians on this day in this location transmitted the music as follows...   Good lesson.  Here's hoping "Infernal" takes on a life of its own and forces solutions and invention.

The new running order and song list:

Side One
1. Cast Out And Cold    5:50
2. The Error Lives On    8:15
3. C 99    9:20

Side Two
4.  Inquisitor   9:30
5.  Walk On Water     7:10
6. We Only Have Eyes For You    7:05

Side Three
7. The Order Of Protection (Part One)    4:15
8. Metro Deathfire    4:35
9. Trickle    2:15
10. In Dissonance We Play    2:40
11. The Sleepers Awaken    5:25
12. The Order Of Protection (Part Two)    2:55

Side Four
13. transitional music    2:45
14. From Hydrogen To Love    14:00
15. Eternal    5:05

All rightie, that's the news that's fit to print as of now...

Onward to finish the album!  Of course, the next stop is finalizing Mogon, but then full attention to Infernal!

It's been a while since Infernal made the Most Popular Album (yesterday), and it has stayed there since. Is there any update information on this anywhere, i.e. actual release date, pre-order, how to buy? I checked Phideaux's official bloodfish site and this has not even made it to discography section.

looks like there are some sporadic updates on phideaux xavier fb page (not phideaux only)...

14.2.2013: Have a recording session for this weekend to do some "re-records" for the album, as well as a "re-record" for half of a song from 7½

so I guess it's still in progress... kinda

What's with all the ratings coming up for the album? Has someone actually heard it?

I'm new to this site, so apologies for this otherwise silly question.

Reviews based on illegal copies are usually deleted by the admins. I don't see any review currently. Some people has "rated only" the album and it may be trolling, we can't know but it's very likely as Xavier wouldn't send copies to people used to "rate only", I think.

There's a forum thread in which we are used to report this kind of things so the site admins can take their actions.
I will post a line there

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

I have alerted the admins. It's likely that the current ratings will be deleted

Phideaux's post from few days back:

Sorry, Jimmy, we were hoping (counting on it, actually) to have the shiny new title available at Terra Incognita! But, this just means we'll have to put on some record release party/show when the album comes out...

As for Double CD -- I figured I had done every silly overblown, pretentious gimmick in music but the double album. Isn't the double album the height of folly? It's like Icarus' wax wings... And so, as I started working on Infernal I realized there was a lot more material than just one album and so I let it spread its wings. Now, we have too much music to fit on 2 LPs. It's approximately 98ish minutes. There is one song that has been cut (and would benefit from the use of "destructive" editing to erase it completely) another that was recorded as a bonus track using some of the album motifs. A third chunk of music that will go was previously a linking "transition" that I'm now thinking harms the song it links to, so I'm going to do an odd ball fade out/space echo noise transition instead and let the new song just emerge beautifully and effortlessly out of the fog. This also helps take a 26 minute "side" of the album down to a more manageable 23 minutes!

So, there are many things left to iron out.

Also, because Doomsday Afternoon has been out of print for about a year, we are making an upgraded new version to release simultaneously with Infernal. In fact, Doomsday Afternoon and a remixed "re-envisioned" version of The Great Leap will be out on vinyl as a result. Because both those albums are 60ish minutes, they are 3 sided LPs and therefore will be released together as a 3 LP version (sharing side 3's). Only The Great Leap will have some bonus track material (to round out a slightly short "side 3".

Therefore, prepare for a simultaneous issue of:

Infernal (2LP Gatefold)
Infernal (2CD in mini LP gatefold)
AND
The Great Leap/Doomsday Afternoon (3 LPs in 2 Gatefold covers)
The Great Leap (CD in mini LP gatefold)

Doomsday Afternoon (CD in mini LP gatefold)

Clap

Sorrry folks for the DEEEEEEEEEEEELAAAAAAAAAAAY..  Please forward your hate mail to my engineer and producer!  As for ratings on this site.  The album isn't even mixed.  There's no way anyone has heard it so ratings are just trolls (not new trolls!)   However, I vow when I get back from our gig up north in Canada that we will get TO IT!

The album is like 98% recorded and just needs a mix (which is really not a "just" cuz that is always a long arduous process...

Please be patient and know that if you're frustrated, I'm like 10x as vexed...

Hey man, work at whatever rate gets us good music. We'll be patient. Definitely appreciate any updates, though.
